Dengue Cases Surge in New York and New Jersey

0

New York: Nearly 200 people have been infected with dengue in New York and New Jersey this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As of now, New York has reported 143 cases, while New Jersey has recorded 41 cases.

This increase in dengue cases has raised concerns among health officials and the public, as dengue is typically more common in tropical and subtropical regions. The recent rise in infections highlights the growing threat of mosquito-borne diseases in areas not traditionally associated with such outbreaks.

Health Authorities on Alert

Health authorities in both states have issued warnings and guidelines to help prevent the spread of dengue. Residents are being urged to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, including using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and ensuring that windows and doors are properly screened.

In response to the surge in cases, local health departments are intensifying mosquito control efforts. This includes increasing the frequency of spraying insecticides in affected areas and conducting public education campaigns about the importance of eliminating standing water, where mosquitoes breed.

Symptoms and Treatment

Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Symptoms typically include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding. In severe cases, dengue can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, both of which can be life-threatening.

There is no specific treatment for dengue, but early detection and proper medical care can significantly reduce the risk of complications and death. Health officials recommend that anyone experiencing symptoms of dengue seek medical attention promptly.

Public Response and Awareness

The public response to the dengue outbreak has been one of concern, with many residents expressing anxiety about the spread of the virus. Community meetings and public forums have been organized to address these concerns and provide information on how to protect against dengue.

The increase in dengue cases serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and proactive measures in preventing mosquito-borne diseases. Health experts are calling for ongoing research and investment in strategies to control mosquito populations and reduce the incidence of diseases like dengue.

Looking Ahead

As health officials continue to monitor the situation, the focus remains on prevention and education. The CDC and local health departments are working together to track the spread of dengue and implement measures to protect public health. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the latest developments and follow recommended guidelines to minimize their risk of infection.

The rise in dengue cases in New York and New Jersey underscores the importance of community involvement and cooperation in tackling this public health challenge. By taking preventive actions and staying aware, residents can help reduce the impact of dengue and safeguard their health and well-being.

Journalist Manhandled During DSC Protest at Osmania University, Media Protests

Hyderabad: A journalist from Zee Telugu was manhandled by police while covering the DSC candidates’ protest at Osmania University (OU) on Wednesday, July 10. This incident is part of a series of issues reporters have faced on campus, especially after the administration began restricting entry into OU.

The journalist was filming the protest when two sub-inspectors from the OU police station apprehended him, dragged him to a police vehicle, and transported him to the police station. The local police inspector allegedly threatened the journalist to delete his videos. This incident has sparked sharp criticism from multiple quarters. Recently, another reporter from TV9 was similarly manhandled and forced into a police jeep.

Former Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) minister Harish Rao condemned the police’s actions, accusing them of attacking journalists. “Is it wrong for them to cover the news as part of their duty? Arresting journalists and forcibly taking them to police stations is a violation of media rights and freedom. We warn the government to change its autocratic attitude towards journalists. We demand the immediate release of the detained journalists,” Harish Rao posted on X.

Although the Congress government is facing criticism, it’s notable that similar accusations were made against the police under the BRS government for restricting journalists from performing their duties.

In response to these incidents, journalists from various media houses protested in front of the Media Center of the State Secretariat today. They wore black badges, condemning the increasing police attacks on media personnel.

TGPEJAC Opposes Government’s Decision to Hand Over Power Bill Collection to Adani Group

0

Hyderabad: The Telangana Power Employees Joint Action Committee (TGPEJAC) has expressed strong opposition to the State government’s decision to hand over the collection of power bills in the Old City to the Adani Group. On Wednesday, TGPEJAC submitted a representation to Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) Chairman and Managing Director Musharaff Ali Faruqui, urging him to address the issue with the government and prevent the proposal from advancing.

TGPEJAC emphasized that privatizing electricity supply is not in the best interest of power utilities, consumers, or employees. They highlighted the concerns of Discom employees, engineers, and artisans who are worried and restless over the issue. The association argued that privatization, under the pretext of addressing high AT&C losses, would impose additional burdens on consumers, as private companies operate with a profit motive.

Citing examples from other states where privatization and franchising of power distribution did not yield desired results, TGPEJAC insisted that the high losses in Hyderabad South Circle could be managed by TGSPDCL itself with government support. They assured that the engineers, employees, and artisans are prepared to undertake any measures necessary to improve the financial health of the Hyderabad South Circle and DISCOMs by reducing AT&C losses.

Rampur: The administration has once again taken action against the influential senior leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and former minister, Azam Khan. According to media reports, a bulldozer has started demolishing Azam Khan’s Humsafar Resort. On Tuesday, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) arrived with a JCB machine and began demolishing the walls and buildings constructed on ‘government land.’

The SP leader has been under scrutiny for several years and is currently in jail. This administrative action has caused chaos in the area. The operation was expedited following a complaint by the city’s Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Akash Saxena, who had recently sent a reminder letter calling for action. The administration promptly initiated the demolition.

In response, SP’s state secretary, Omendra Chauhan, expressed displeasure over the action. The district administration had filed a case in the court of the Tehsildar President, claiming that the resort occupies 0.038 hectares of land designated for manure pits, under plot number 164. A court-ordered survey confirmed that the land was indeed for manure pits, leading to a court order to remove the illegal encroachments and recover compensation. However, the process had slowed down.

After Akash Saxena expressed his dissatisfaction with the pace of the action and sent a reminder to the tehsil administration, the administration became active. In compliance with the court order, the administrative team arrived at Humsafar Resort with a JCB and began the removal process. The illegal structures and encroachments were dismantled with the help of the JCB.

Four Telugu-Origin Individuals Charged in Collin County Forced Labor Scheme

0

In Collin County, Texas, four individuals of Telugu origin have been charged with allegedly operating a forced labor scheme. The Princeton police have been actively searching for these individuals since March this year, when the operation first came to light.

On March 13, officers were dispatched to a residence on the 1000 block of Ginsburg Lane in response to a welfare concern and suspicious circumstances. Upon investigation, they obtained a search warrant for the home of Santhosh Katkoori. Inside, they found 15 women who reported being forced to work for several shell companies owned by Katkoori and his wife, Dwaraka Gunda.

The investigation revealed that both women and men were being exploited as programmers. During the search, authorities seized laptops, phones, printers, and fraudulent documents. Further inquiries led to the discovery of multiple locations in Princeton, Melissa, and McKinney involved in the operation, where additional electronic devices and documents were confiscated.

Following an extensive analysis of the seized electronics, arrest warrants were issued for Santhosh Katkoori (31), Dwaraka Gunda (31), Chandan Dasireddy (24), and Anil Male (37). All four are charged with trafficking of persons, a second-degree felony. It remains unclear if they have secured legal representation.

The Princeton Police have indicated that additional charges against other parties may be forthcoming as the investigation continues. They urge anyone with information or who has been a victim of trafficking to contact the department.

A 25-year-old Indian student, Sai Surya Avinash Gadde, tragically drowned at Barberville Falls in Albany, New York on July 7. Gadde, who was studying at Trine University in Indiana, had been visiting the area for the long July 4 weekend.

The Indian Consulate in New York confirmed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), expressing deep sorrow over Gadde’s untimely demise. Local reports mentioned that multiple rescue teams responded after two men encountered difficulties while swimming at Barberville Falls. A good Samaritan managed to save one man, but Gadde, unfortunately, did not survive.

Gadde’s death adds to a troubling trend of increasing incidents involving Indian nationals, particularly students, in the United States. Just last month, another Indian national, 32-year-old D. Gopikrishna, was fatally shot during a robbery at a convenience store in Pleasant Grove, Dallas, Texas.

The community is reeling from these losses, and the Consulate has extended thoughts and prayers to the affected families during these challenging times.
