A 25-year-old Indian student, Sai Surya Avinash Gadde, tragically drowned at Barberville Falls in Albany, New York on July 7. Gadde, who was studying at Trine University in Indiana, had been visiting the area for the long July 4 weekend.
The Indian Consulate in New York confirmed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), expressing deep sorrow over Gadde’s untimely demise. They offered condolences to his family and friends and assured that all necessary assistance, including the issuance of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for transporting Gadde’s remains to India, is being provided.
Local reports mentioned that multiple rescue teams responded after two men encountered difficulties while swimming at Barberville Falls. A good Samaritan managed to save one man, but Gadde, unfortunately, did not survive.
Gadde’s death adds to a troubling trend of increasing incidents involving Indian nationals, particularly students, in the United States. Just last month, another Indian national, 32-year-old D. Gopikrishna, was fatally shot during a robbery at a convenience store in Pleasant Grove, Dallas, Texas.
The community is reeling from these losses, and the Consulate has extended thoughts and prayers to the affected families during these challenging times.
