Former US President Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Shots were fired while Trump was speaking, causing him to clutch his ear, which was bleeding. Secret Service agents immediately formed a protective barrier around Trump and quickly escorted him off the stage.

The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, was positioned on a rooftop of a manufacturing plant approximately 130 yards from the stage. Law enforcement officials confirmed that Crooks fired multiple shots before being killed by the Secret Service. The FBI has not yet identified a motive for the attack.

This incident marks the first assassination attempt on a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981. The attack has heightened concerns in the already polarized political atmosphere, just months before the presidential elections and shortly before Trump is set to be officially named the Republican nominee.

Witnesses reported hearing a pop sound as Trump was speaking, followed by Trump clutching his ear. Two more shots were heard as Trump crouched down. Secret Service agents quickly surrounded him, following their training protocol to shield him with their bodies and locate the threat. Trump was then placed in a waiting SUV and taken to safety. He later confirmed that he was doing “fine” after the incident.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with authorities working to uncover any possible motives behind Crooks’ actions.

Italian Police Free 33 Indian Farm Workers from ‘Slavery’

0

In a significant operation, Italian police announced on Saturday (July 13) that they have freed 33 Indian farm laborers from slave-like working conditions in the northern Verona province, as reported by Reuters. The police also seized $545,300 (around €500,000) from the alleged abusers of these laborers.

The abusers, who are also from India, brought fellow nationals to Italy on seasonal work permits, charging them €17,000 each and promising them a better future. The workers were subjected to extreme exploitation, working seven days a week, 10-12 hours a day, for just $4.37 per hour, which was entirely docked from their wages until they settled their debts. Some were coerced into continuing to work for free to pay an additional $14,197 for a permanent work permit, which they were never going to receive.

The police described the migrants’ treatment as “slavery” and charged the abusers with crimes related to slavery and labor exploitation. The victims will be offered protection, work opportunities, and legal residency papers.

This incident underscores the ongoing issue of labor shortages in Italy and other European countries, often filled through immigration, particularly for lower-paid jobs. The country’s migrant work visa system has faced multiple cases of fraud.

The operation comes shortly after another tragic event in June, where an Indian fruit picker died after his arm was severed by machinery. Police arrested farm owner Antonello Lovato on suspicion of the homicide of Satnam Singh. Lovato, who was driving the tractor at the time, allegedly abandoned Singh after the accident, refusing entreaties to call an ambulance.

Karnataka to Challenge Cauvery Water Directive

0

Bengaluru, July 12, 2024 – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Friday that the state will appeal against the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee’s (CWRC) directive to release one TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of Cauvery river water daily to Tamil Nadu until the end of the month. This decision follows a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, ministers from the Cauvery river basin area, and other officials. An all-party meeting is scheduled for July 14 to decide the state’s next steps.

“Despite forecasts for normal rains, there has been a 28% deficit in inflow so far,” Siddaramaiah stated. “We clearly conveyed this to the CWRC and requested that no decision be made until the end of July. However, the CWRC has still mandated the release of one TMC of water daily from July 12.”

The Chief Minister emphasized the need for an appeal against this order before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). “All parties in Karnataka are united on this water issue. Therefore, an all-party meeting will be held on July 14,” he said.

Union Ministers, Members of Parliament from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and MLAs from the Cauvery river basin region will be invited to the meeting. The government plans to decide its next move with collective consensus.

Siddaramaiah noted that 5000 cusecs of water are currently being released to Tamil Nadu at Biligundlu, equivalent to the Kabini dam’s inflow. He highlighted the limited water availability, with only 60 TMC of water across the four reservoirs in the Cauvery basin in Karnataka. “We also need to provide water for agricultural activities. Considering the deficit in rainfall, we have requested to wait until the end of July,” he added.

Supreme Court Adjourns NEET UG Hearing to July 18

0

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has adjourned the NEET UG hearing till July 18 as responses from the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) are yet to be received by some parties.

Brief Hearing Overview

During the brief hearing, counsel for the petitioners requested the pleas to be listed on July 15. However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta expressed his unavailability on that date. Consequently, Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, heading the bench, announced that the further hearing will take place on Thursday, July 18.

CBI Status Report

The bench acknowledged receiving a status report from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the progress of the probe into alleged irregularities in the conduct of NEET UG 2024.

Centre’s Affidavit

The Centre had informed the Supreme Court that data analytics of the NEET UG 2024 results by IIT Madras found “no abnormality,” indicating no signs of mass malpractice or localized benefit to certain candidates.

Data Analytics

On July 8, the court had inquired about the feasibility of using data analytics to identify suspect cases. The Centre’s affidavit revealed that city-wise and centre-wise analyses for 2023 and 2024 showed no abnormal indications. The analysis covered the top 1.4 lakh ranks and concluded that there were no signs of mass malpractice or localized advantages.

Increased Marks Explanation

The affidavit also noted an overall increase in marks, specifically in the 550 to 720 range, across various cities and centres. This increase is attributed to a 25% reduction in syllabus, with high scorers spread across multiple locations, reducing the likelihood of malpractice.

Counselling Update

Meanwhile, students are awaiting an update on the NEET UG 2024 counselling date. The Centre announced that counselling will commence in the third week of July and will be conducted in four rounds. It also warned that if any person is found involved in malpractices, their candidature would be canceled at any stage during or after the counselling process.
