Torrential Rains Cause Devastation in Pune: Four Dead, Army Dispatched for Rescue

Pune, July 25: Pune and its surrounding areas have been ravaged by relentless rainfall, leading to significant destruction and claiming at least four lives. The heavy rains have submerged many houses in low-lying regions and forced the evacuation of residents from affected housing societies.

In the 24-hour period ending at 7:30 am, Lonavla recorded 300 mm of rainfall, Lavasa received 417 mm, and Junnar experienced 214 mm, according to the district administration.

Tragically, three young men were electrocuted near Bhide Bridge in Pune city on Wednesday night. The victims—Abhishekh Ajay Ghanekar, Akash Vinayak Mane, and Shiva Parihar—were operating an egg bhurji stall in the Deccan area when electric current from stagnant floodwater caused their deaths.

Separately, a landslide early Thursday morning in Adharwadi village resulted in one fatality and one injury. Shivaji Bhairat, a resident of Mulshi, was killed, and Jitendra Jambhurpane from Gondia, currently residing in Mulshi, was injured.

In Lavasa city, a mudslide trapped three people from Dasave village, burying two villas. Local police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been mobilized for rescue operations.

Pune District Collector Suhas Diwse reported, “We have confirmed four casualties—three due to electrocution and one from a landslide. Additionally, three individuals are trapped in Lavasa city following the mudslide. Rescue operations are underway.”

Diwse has urged residents to remain indoors amid the severe weather. Flooding has worsened due to the release of water from Khadakwasla dam, which has caused the Mutha River to overflow and inundate low-lying areas.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, the guardian minister for Pune district, have been closely monitoring the situation. Pawar commented, “Many areas in Pune are facing flood-like conditions due to the discharge from the Mutha River after the Khadakwasla dam began overflowing.”

In response to the crisis, the Pune administration has advised private establishments to grant employees a holiday due to the severe weather conditions. Areas such as Sinhagad Road, Bavdhan, Baner, and Deccan Gymkhana are experiencing severe flooding, with the fire brigade and Pune Municipal Corporation’s disaster management cell working to rescue stranded residents.

The rising water levels of the Mutha River, exacerbated by record rains and substantial water discharge from Khadakwasla dam, have led to extensive flooding in housing societies, particularly along Sinhagad Road. By 11 am, over 400 people had been evacuated from various housing societies.

In response to the escalating situation, the Indian Army has dispatched a rescue and relief column to Ekta Nagar. The contingent includes infantry troops, an engineer task force, and medical personnel equipped with rescue boats and essential healthcare services.

An Army statement confirmed, “Additional Army columns are on standby and ready to deploy as needed. The Southern Command is coordinating closely with civil administration and other government agencies.”

The district administration has declared a holiday for schools in Pune city, Pimpri Chinchwad, and western parts of the district. District Collector Suhas Diwase has ordered the closure of all primary and secondary schools in affected areas.

“We have deployed fire brigade and disaster management personnel in low-lying areas. Residents are advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary,” Diwase added.

BRS Leader Abdullah Sohail Accuses Congress Govt of Deceiving Minorities in Telangana Budget

0

“Why is there no mention of Taufa-e-Taleem and other promised schemes in the budget speech?” he asked.

Hyderabad, July 25: BRS senior leader Shaik Abdullah Sohail has accused the Congress government of failing to deliver on its promise of a Rs 4,000 crore budget and a Minorities Sub-Plan for the state.

In response to the full budget presented by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu on Thursday, Abdullah Sohail pointed out that only Rs 3,003 crores were allocated for minority welfare. He noted that in the Vote-on-Account budget presented on February 10, the amount was only Rs 2,262 crores. Following criticism from the BRS party, the Congress government increased the amount to Rs 3,003 crores. However, Abdullah Sohail argued that the Congress party had promised to increase the minority welfare budget to Rs 4,000 crores, along with a dedicated Minorities Sub-Plan. By not honoring this electoral promise, he claimed that the Congress government had cheated the state’s minorities.

Abdullah Sohail reminded that on November 10, 2023, the Congress party released the Minority Declaration, making specific promises to the minorities. Of the 12 major promises in the declaration, seven were directly related to budgetary allocations. These included increasing the minority welfare budget to Rs 4,000 crores, a dedicated Minorities Sub-Plan, and Rs 1,000 crores annually to provide subsidized loans for jobless minority youth and women. Other promises included the implementation of the Abdul Kalam Taufa-e-Taleem Scheme to provide financial assistance to Muslim, Christian, Sikh, and other minority youth completing M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs, with additional amounts for various educational levels.

“Why is there no mention of Taufa-e-Taleem and other promised schemes in the budget speech?” he asked.

Abdullah Sohail also highlighted that the Congress party had promised a monthly honorarium of Rs 10,000 – 12,000 for priests of all religions, including Imams, Muezzins, Khadims, Pastors, and Granthis. It also assured the provision of house sites and Rs 5 lakhs for constructing houses for all houseless minority families under the Indiramma Indlu Scheme. Newlywed couples from Muslim, Christian, Sikh, and other minority communities were also promised Rs 1,60,000. “Why were no allocations made to fulfill these promises?” he asked.

“Despite being in power for seven months, the Congress government has not honored a single promise made to the minorities. The Congress did not give representation to Muslims in the Telangana cabinet, and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, who also oversees the minorities welfare portfolio, has not conducted a single review meeting to discuss budget provisions,” he said.

Abdullah Sohail claimed that the Congress government announced Rs 10,000 crores for Hyderabad’s development in the budget merely to create hype. He argued that if the Congress government were sincere, it should have announced the revitalization of SETWIN and skill development training and the transformation of the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) to develop infrastructure in the Old City, which was promised in the Minority Declaration.

“Revanth Reddy is still in a vindictive mode, taking revenge on minorities who voted for the BRS in previous Assembly elections. No importance is being given to any Muslim leader in the government or the Congress party,” he alleged, adding that nothing different could be expected from a Chief Minister with an RSS background.

Abdullah Sohail announced that the BRS party would soon launch a massive agitation to expose the Congress government’s anti-minority stance in Telangana and pressurize it to fulfill all electoral promises, including the Rs 4,000 crore budget and the Minorities Sub-Plan.

High Court Issues Notice to Kangana Ranaut on Election Challenge

0

The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to BJP MP Kangana Ranaut following a petition seeking to set aside her election from the Mandi Lok Sabha seat. The petition was filed by Layak Ram Negi, a former government employee from Kinnaur, who alleged that his nomination papers for the election were wrongfully rejected by the returning officer.

Negi claimed that he had taken voluntary retirement and provided a “no dues certificate” from his department along with his nomination. However, his papers were rejected within a day after he was asked to produce additional “no dues certificates” from the electricity, water, and telephone departments. Despite submitting all required documents on May 15, the returning officer did not accept them, leading to the rejection of his nomination.

Negi, who filed his nomination as an independent candidate, stated that he could have won the election if his papers had been accepted and requested the court to annul the election results.

Justice Jyotsna Rewal directed Kangana Ranaut to file a reply by August 21.

Ranaut had won the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of 74,755 votes against Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh. Ranaut secured 537,002 votes, while Singh received 462,267 votes.
