Watch// Imams and Muezzins Protest at Haj House, Demand Honorarium Release

0

“Wakf Board Chairman Azmathullah Clarifies: ‘We Promised to Increase the Amount for Imams and Muezzins in Our Manifesto, but Did Not Commit to a Specific Methodology'”

Hyderabad, December 30 : A silent protest was staged by several Imams and Muezzins from across Telangana at the Haj House, Nampally, on Monday, expressing dissatisfaction with the Congress-led government for failing to release their honorarium.

During the protest, the demonstrators issued a strong warning to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, accusing his government of failing to honor its election promises. “Your government is dishonest. Despite making grand promises during elections, we have not received even a single rupee in the past year. This government will not last long,” said the protestors.

The protest drew the attention of Telangana State Wakf Board Chairman Azmathullah, who addressed the gathering. He clarified that while the Congress party’s election manifesto promised to increase the honorarium for Imams and Muezzins compared to the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government, no specific timeline was provided for its implementation. “The government is committed to fulfilling its promise, but no concrete announcement has been made yet,” Azmathullah stated.

The BRS government had earlier set the honorarium for Imams and Muezzins at ₹5,000, which was disbursed after verifying applications through the Telangana State Wakf Board. However, the Congress party had pledged to increase the amount during its election campaign.

Speaking at the protest, Maulana Hakeem Syed Shah Muhammad Khairuddin Sufi , president of the All India Sufi Ulema Council, accused the Congress government of treating the Muslim community unfairly. “Since coming to power, the Congress party has not paid a single penny to the Imams and Muezzins. The community feels deceived,” he charged.

The protestors alleged that the honorarium released a few months ago was actually approved during the BRS regime but was delayed due to the election code. They claimed that the Congress government has so far failed to allocate funds for institutions like the Telangana Urdu Academy and Telangana Minorities Finance Corporation.

Warning of more protests if their demands are not met, the Imams and Muezzins highlighted that honorarium payments have been pending for 12 months. Efforts to contact officials of the Telangana State Wakf Board for clarification on the matter were unsuccessful.

Telangana Council Mulls Over Scrapping Final-Year Language Study for Degree Students

0

Hyderabad: The Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) is considering a major reform in the curriculum for conventional degree courses, potentially eliminating mandatory language studies in the final year, especially for science programme students. This change, if implemented, will take effect from the next academic year.

The move aims to allow students to dedicate more time to their core subjects during the crucial final year. Expert committees formed by the Council have proposed this modification during a recent review meeting on revamping the undergraduate course structure.

Under the proposed system, students studying languages such as Telugu, Hindi, or Urdu as a second language will no longer be required to continue these studies in their third year. “This initiative seeks to enhance students’ core competencies, particularly in science disciplines,” according to sources from the Council.

This approach is not entirely new to Telangana, as a similar system was in place before 2021. However, language studies were reintroduced in the final year following recommendations from an expert committee at that time.

Reduction in Science Programme Credits

In addition to scrapping final-year language studies, the Council is planning to reduce the credit requirements for science programmes from the current 160 to 145 or 146 credits. The intent is to standardize the credit system across all conventional degree courses offered by universities in the state.

Mandatory Projects for Final-Year Students

Another significant reform being considered is the inclusion of mandatory projects for final-year students. These projects would require students to work in industries or sectors relevant to their fields of study, earning four credits as part of their coursework. This initiative aligns with similar project-based learning methods already implemented in engineering programmes.

To further enhance learning opportunities, degree students may also be allowed to enroll in online courses through platforms like SWAYAM and NPTEL, with earned credits transferable to their degree programmes.

If these proposals are approved, they are expected to bring substantial changes to the undergraduate curriculum, fostering a more focused and industry-relevant education system in Telangana.

As a scholar-politician, Singh allowed his work to speak volumes, exemplifying the adage, “Actions speak louder than words.”
