New Delhi: Former Prime Minister and senior Congress leader Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Singh, who had retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year after a remarkable 33-year tenure in the Upper House, had been admitted to AIIMS Delhi in critical condition following a sudden health decline.
According to a statement released by AIIMS Delhi, Dr. Singh was undergoing treatment for age-related medical conditions. The hospital revealed that he suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence on the evening of December 26. Despite immediate resuscitative measures at home and further medical interventions at AIIMS, he was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their daughters, Upinder Singh, Daman Singh, and Amrit Singh.
The news of his passing has led to an outpouring of grief across the nation. Political leaders from across party lines, including BJP President JP Nadda and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, were seen rushing to AIIMS upon hearing the news. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), recalling his interactions with Dr. Singh.
“Dr. Manmohan Singh ji and I interacted regularly when he was PM and I was the CM of Gujarat. His wisdom and humility were always evident. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with his family, friends, and countless admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi wrote, sharing a series of photos in tribute.
Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi also rushed to Delhi from Karnataka, where they had been attending the centenary celebrations of the historic 1924 Indian National Congress session led by Mahatma Gandhi.
In a heartfelt message, Kharge stated, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble beginnings, he became a respected economist and served the nation in various capacities, including as Finance Minister. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by extensive efforts to improve the lives of our citizens.”
The demise of Dr. Singh marks the end of an era in Indian politics. Known for his humility, wisdom, and impactful economic reforms, he leaves behind a lasting legacy that will be remembered for generations.
