Centre Rejects Study Claiming 11.9 Lakh Excess Deaths in India During 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic

New Delhi :- The Union Health Ministry has dismissed a recent study published in the US-based journal, Science Advances, which alleged that India experienced significant excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The study’s claim of 1.19 million excess deaths, 17% higher than the previous year, has been termed “erroneous” by the ministry.

According to the study, the reported excess deaths are eight times higher than the official COVID-19 death toll in India and 1.5 times greater than estimates by the World Health Organization. The ministry criticized the study’s methodology, calling it “untenable and unacceptable.”

The primary concern raised by the ministry is the study’s reliance on data from a subset of households in the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5), conducted between January and April 2021. The authors compared mortality rates from 2020 to 2019 and extrapolated the findings to the entire country. The ministry argued that the NFHS sample is only representative when considering the nation as a whole, and the 23% of households included from 14 states cannot represent the entire country.

Additionally, the timing of data collection, coinciding with the pandemic’s peak, might introduce selection and reporting biases, further compromising the study’s findings.

The ministry also refuted the study’s claim that India’s vital registration system is weak. They emphasized that India’s Civil Registration System (CRS) is robust, capturing over 99% of deaths. The increase in reported deaths is attributed to improved CRS coverage and a growing population base rather than the pandemic alone.

“It is strongly asserted that an excess mortality of about 11.9 lakh deaths reported in the ‘Science Advances’ paper in 2020 over the previous year is a gross and misleading overestimate,” the ministry stated.

The study’s assertion that excess mortality was higher among females and younger age groups, particularly children aged 0-19 years, contradicts existing data. Research and program data on COVID-19 in India show higher mortality in males compared to females (2:1) and in older age groups.

The ministry concluded that the all-cause excess mortality in India for 2020 is significantly lower than the 11.9 lakh deaths reported in the study.

Congress Accuses PM Modi of Lying About Job Creation, Rubbing Salt into Wounds of Youth

0

July 19, 2024 :- Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of lying about the creation of eight crore new jobs, alleging that the PM is “rubbing salt into the wounds” of the youth with false claims.

Modi’s Claims and Congress’ Response:
Prime Minister Modi recently stated that eight crore jobs were created in the last three to four years, which he claimed silenced critics of his government’s employment record. Citing a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report on employment, Modi emphasized that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government prioritized stability and growth, earning investor confidence.

In a post on social media platform X, Kharge criticized Modi, saying, “Narendra Modi ji, by telling one lie after another on jobs, you are rubbing salt into the wounds of the youth!” Kharge challenged Modi with three questions regarding the RBI’s employment data:

  1. Why has the government failed to deliver on the promise of 20 crore jobs in 10 years, instead reportedly losing over 12 crore jobs?
  2. Why does the RBI report show an increase of 2.1 crore in employment between 2012 and 2019, while an International Labour Organization (ILO) report claims only a 2 lakh increase?
  3. Is it not true that, according to government data, 37% of working women are unpaid, with this figure rising to 43% in rural areas?

Impact of Economic Policies:
Kharge further criticized the government’s economic policies, citing the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE), which reported a loss of 54 lakh jobs in the informal manufacturing sector over seven years due to demonetization, flawed GST implementation, and the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that 2.3 crore individuals who lost their regular jobs between 2019-20 and 2022-23 are now working as agricultural laborers, according to the RBI report.

Kharge questioned the accuracy of the RBI’s 2023–24 employment data, pointing out the lack of sector-wise breakdowns. He concluded by urging Modi to stop hiding behind “fake reports” and address the unfulfilled promise of creating two crore jobs per year.

July 19, 2024 :- A major outage at Microsoft disrupted services globally, affecting various industries, including airlines and technology sectors. The outage had significant repercussions, especially in the United States, but its impact was felt in India as well.

U.S. Airlines Resume Operations

Several U.S. airlines experienced operational delays and temporary flight suspensions due to their dependence on Microsoft’s cloud services for essential functions like flight planning and customer service. Airlines quickly implemented contingency plans to restore operations, and by the end of the day, most had returned to normal, although minor delays persisted.

Indian Airlines Manage Disruptions

In India, major airlines such as IndiGo, operating in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, reported that their operations remained under control despite the global outage. IndiGo’s proactive measures and reliance on alternative systems helped mitigate the impact, ensuring minimal disruption to their services.

Tech Sector in India Feels the Ripple Effects

The Indian tech sector, heavily reliant on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, also experienced interruptions in cloud-based applications and services. However, many companies had backup systems in place, which allowed them to maintain critical operations and minimize downtime.

Business Continuity and Future Preparedness

The outage underscored the importance of robust business continuity planning. Indian companies and service providers are now reviewing and strengthening their contingency measures to handle future outages more effectively. There is an increased focus on diversifying cloud service dependencies and adopting hybrid or multi-cloud approaches to enhance resilience.

Security and Reliability Concerns

The incident raised concerns about the reliability and security of cloud services, prompting businesses in India and globally to be more vigilant about their IT infrastructure. Discussions around regulatory measures to ensure high standards of uptime and reliability for service providers are gaining momentum.

Investment in Infrastructure

The outage highlighted the need for resilient IT infrastructure. Both the private and public sectors in India are likely to invest more in enhancing their IT capabilities, disaster recovery solutions, and overall infrastructure resilience to prevent similar disruptions in the future.

Owaisi: Directive on Eateries for Kanwar Yatra Reminds of Hitler Era

Yogi Adityanath Possessed by the Spirit of Hitler, Says Asaduddin Owaisi – Video Available

Hyderabad: Condemning the Uttar Pradesh Police’s directive asking eateries on the Kanwar Yatra route in Muzaffarnagar to display their owners’ names, AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi said on Thursday that it reminds him of Hitler’s era in Nazi Germany when Jewish businesses were boycotted. Calling it a social and economic boycott of Muslims, the Hyderabad MP said it evokes memories of ‘Judenboykott,’ the Nazi boycott of Jewish businesses.

“It feels as if we are living in 1930 in Hitler’s era. It reminds one of Judenboykott,” he said. Terming the verbal order discriminatory, Owaisi dared the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government to issue a written order on this matter. He also accused the BJP government of violating Article 17 of the Constitution by promoting untouchability. “This is also a violation of Article 21 of the Constitution, which provides the right to life, and Article 19, which guarantees the right to livelihood,” he said.

The AIMIM chief also claimed that after the verbal order, dhabas and hotels in Muzaffarnagar have removed many Muslim employees. “Who has given you the power? Will you destroy the livelihoods of others? Will you work for only one community?” he asked. Alleging that under the pressure of Hindutva organisations, people are being told not to go to shops owned by Muslims, Owaisi questioned why outlets like McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Cafe Coffee Day on the Yatra route were not asked to display their owners’ names. “This is discrimination against Muslims. The Constitution is being thrown to the wind.”

Meanwhile, the police in Muzaffarnagar issued a fresh advisory on Thursday, making it “voluntary” for eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners. In a post on X, Muzaffarnagar Police said they did not intend to create any religious discrimination, but only aimed to prevent any untoward situation when the devotees pass through the district.

There is NO REASON that Vaishnaw should continue as Railway Minister even for a minute : Saket Gokhale

Video Available

In a tragic incident, the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed in Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the deaths of at least four passengers and injuries to 20 others. The derailment occurred near Gonda on Thursday, causing a major disruption in railway services and widespread panic among passengers.

According to initial reports, one of the loco pilots of the ill-fated train claimed to have heard a loud explosion just before the accident occurred. The loco pilot, Tribhuvan, reported hearing an explosion-like sound before the bogies of the train derailed. This statement has raised concerns about the possibility of sabotage or a technical fault leading to the derailment. Railway authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and are considering all possible angles, including mechanical failure and foul play.

The derailment caused eight bogies of the train to veer off the tracks, leading to a chaotic scene with passengers trying to escape from the overturned compartments. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, with rescue operations continuing for several hours to ensure all passengers were accounted for and to provide medical assistance to the injured.

The injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving treatment. The identities of the deceased have not yet been disclosed, pending notification of their families. The Ministry of Railways has announced ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakhs for those with grievous injuries, and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries.

In response to the derailment, senior railway officials visited the site to oversee the rescue and relief operations. They assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted and that steps would be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. A high-level inquiry has been ordered by the Railways.

Local authorities have also been involved in the rescue efforts, providing support to the affected passengers and ensuring that alternative arrangements are made for those who were stranded due to the derailment.

This incident has once again highlighted the need for stringent safety measures and regular maintenance checks to ensure the safety of passengers traveling by train. The Railways have faced criticism in the past for lapses in safety protocols, and this derailment has intensified calls for improved infrastructure and better safety practices.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to refrain from speculating about the cause of the derailment and to wait for the official findings. The Railways have promised to provide regular updates on the progress of the investigation and on the measures being taken to enhance passenger safety.

“MP Saket Gokhale Slams Rail Minister, Alleges Dark Motives Behind Frequent Rail Mishaps”

Saket Gokhale MP posted a video of the rail accident on his Twitter account, writing:

“In yet another rail disaster, bogies of the Dibrugarh Express derailed near Gonda railway station in UP this evening.

Literally EVERY week, there’s a railway tragedy & people lose their lives. Everyday there are videos on social media of people struggling in over-crowded trains.

In ANY other functional govt, Rail Minister @AshwiniVaishnaw would’ve been sacked.

It’s mysterious as to why he’s not only kept in charge of the rail ministry but also rewarded with an extra cabinet berth by Modi.

Unless these regular accidents are a part of a secret evil ploy by Modi to sell off railways to private players for peanuts, there is NO REASON that Vaishnaw should continue as Railway Minister even for a minute.

Something is very, very murky.”
