July 19, 2024 :- Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of lying about the creation of eight crore new jobs, alleging that the PM is “rubbing salt into the wounds” of the youth with false claims.

Modi’s Claims and Congress’ Response:
Prime Minister Modi recently stated that eight crore jobs were created in the last three to four years, which he claimed silenced critics of his government’s employment record. Citing a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report on employment, Modi emphasized that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government prioritized stability and growth, earning investor confidence.

In a post on social media platform X, Kharge criticized Modi, saying, “Narendra Modi ji, by telling one lie after another on jobs, you are rubbing salt into the wounds of the youth!” Kharge challenged Modi with three questions regarding the RBI’s employment data:

  1. Why has the government failed to deliver on the promise of 20 crore jobs in 10 years, instead reportedly losing over 12 crore jobs?
  2. Why does the RBI report show an increase of 2.1 crore in employment between 2012 and 2019, while an International Labour Organization (ILO) report claims only a 2 lakh increase?
  3. Is it not true that, according to government data, 37% of working women are unpaid, with this figure rising to 43% in rural areas?

Impact of Economic Policies:
Kharge further criticized the government’s economic policies, citing the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE), which reported a loss of 54 lakh jobs in the informal manufacturing sector over seven years due to demonetization, flawed GST implementation, and the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that 2.3 crore individuals who lost their regular jobs between 2019-20 and 2022-23 are now working as agricultural laborers, according to the RBI report.

Kharge questioned the accuracy of the RBI’s 2023–24 employment data, pointing out the lack of sector-wise breakdowns. He concluded by urging Modi to stop hiding behind “fake reports” and address the unfulfilled promise of creating two crore jobs per year.
