Accuracy of Telangana Fever Survey Data Questioned Amid Viral Fever Season

0

Hyderabad, August 27, 2024: The recent fever survey conducted by the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) in Telangana during the ongoing viral fever and vector-borne disease season has raised concerns over the accuracy and reliability of the data presented by the health department.

The survey, conducted between July 23 and August 26, reportedly covered 4.40 crore individuals across the state, identifying 2,65,324 cases of fever. However, skepticism surrounds the feasibility of surveying 4.40 crore people within a month, especially given that Telangana’s population is estimated to be between 3.50 crore and 3.80 crore.

Senior health officials familiar with previous fever surveys and Kanti Velugu initiatives have pointed out the logistical challenges of covering such a large number of individuals in just 30 days, even with repeat household visits by healthcare workers.

Additionally, discrepancies have emerged in the fever survey data between August 24 and August 26. On August 26, DPH Dr. B Ravinder Naik stated that the survey covered 1.42 crore households and screened 4.40 crore individuals between July 23 and August 25, identifying 2,65,324 fever cases. However, on August 24, Dr. Naik reported that 3.91 crore individuals were screened from 1.27 crore households between July 23 and August 21, with 2,45,111 fever cases identified.

The rapid increase of approximately 50 lakh individuals screened within just three days, from August 21 to August 26, has raised further doubts about the survey’s credibility.

Efforts to reach DPH Dr. Ravinder Naik for clarification have been unsuccessful.

Fever Survey Data Highlights:

  • August 26 (July 23-August 25):
  • Households covered: 1,42,78,723
  • Individuals screened: 4,40,06,799
  • Viral fevers identified: 2,65,324
  • August 24 (July 23-August 21):
  • Households covered: 1,27,49,028
  • Individuals screened: 3,91,72,312
  • Viral fevers identified: 2,45,111

KTR Seeks Contempt Action Against Bandi Sanjay Over Comments on Kavitha’s Bail

0

Hyderabad, August 27, 2024: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Tuesday urged the Chief Justice of India and the Supreme Court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay for his remarks on the bail granted to BRS MLC K Kavitha in the Delhi liquor policy case.

Rama Rao took strong exception to Sanjay’s comments, which he described as defamatory and disrespectful toward the Supreme Court. He emphasized that as a union minister in charge of Home Affairs, Sanjay’s remarks were highly inappropriate and cast aspersions on the judiciary.

“Highly unbecoming of your position,” Rama Rao stated, adding, “I respectfully urge the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India & the respected Supreme Court to take cognizance.” His statement came after Sanjay congratulated the Congress party and its advocates for securing Kavitha’s bail, implying a connection between the BRS and Congress in the matter.

In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Sanjay had sarcastically congratulated both the Congress party and its advocates, saying their “untiring efforts” had secured Kavitha’s bail in the “infamous liquor scam.” He also insinuated that the bail was a joint victory for both BRS and Congress, referencing the nomination of the Congress candidate who argued for Kavitha’s bail to the Rajya Sabha.

Kavitha Secures Bail as Supreme Court Overturns Delhi HC Ruling

New Delhi, August 27, 2024: The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to BRS leader K Kavitha, who had been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy case. This decision comes after the Supreme Court overturned the Delhi High Court’s July 1 order that had denied her bail.

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, a Delhi court promptly issued release warrants for Kavitha in both corruption and money laundering cases linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja ordered her release, requiring a personal bond of ₹10 lakh for each case, along with sureties.

The Supreme Court noted that Kavitha had been in custody for around five months and that investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and ED had concluded. During the hearing, the apex court requested the ED and CBI to present evidence of Kavitha’s involvement in the alleged scam. Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan reviewed her bail petitions, with senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi arguing for her release, citing the completion of investigations and referencing the Supreme Court’s earlier decision to grant bail to AAP leader Manish Sisodia, a co-accused in the same case.

Meanwhile, Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, representing the central agencies, accused Kavitha of destroying or formatting her mobile phone, alleging it was evidence tampering. Rohatgi dismissed these allegations as “bogus.”

Kavitha was arrested by the ED on March 15 from her Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad and later by the CBI on April 11 from Tihar jail. Despite facing allegations and extended custody, she has consistently denied any wrongdoing. The Delhi High Court had previously dismissed her bail pleas, labeling her as one of the main conspirators in the criminal conspiracy related to the now-defunct Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

Her brother and former minister, Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao, expressed his relief on social media, stating, “Thank You Supreme Court 🙏 Relieved. Justice prevailed.”

Public Health Officials Urge Precautions as Mask Usage Rises Again

Hyderabad: With a noticeable rise in upper respiratory tract infections, including influenza, viral fevers, and pneumonia, doctors and healthcare staff in Hyderabad have resumed wearing face masks in hospitals. They are also advising patients and their attendants to do the same.

Although the current wave of viral fevers is not as severe as the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic when masks were mandatory, many individuals have started wearing masks again as a precautionary measure to prevent airborne transmission.

In response to the situation, the Directorate of Public Health (DPH), Telangana, has issued guidelines urging the public to protect themselves from airborne infections like viral fevers, conjunctivitis, and influenza by adhering to proper cough etiquette.

Precautions for Airborne Infections:

  • Avoid shaking hands and sharing food, water, or clothes with infected individuals.
  • Wash hands frequently and use hand sanitizers often.
  • Minimize hand contamination by avoiding contact with door handles, tabletops, and lift buttons.
  • Cover your mouth while sneezing or coughing.
  • Use disposable tissues if you have a cough or cold.
  • If a fever persists for more than two or three days, consult a general physician.

Surge in Dengue and Viral Fever Cases Triggers Health Crisis in Hyderabad

“Silent Threat: Mosquitoes on the Rise Amidst Hyderabad’s Dengue Surge”

Hyderabad: The city of Hyderabad is currently facing a severe health crisis as the number of dengue and viral fever cases has surged dramatically over the past few weeks.

A steady influx of patients with symptoms typical of viral fevers and dengue has been recorded across private nursing homes, clinics, and major government hospitals, including Fever Hospital, Gandhi Hospital, and Osmania General Hospital (OGH). The outpatient departments (OPDs) of these hospitals are seeing an overwhelming number of patients, with Gandhi Hospital and OGH each managing between 1,500 and 2,000 patient visits per day. The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is also reporting nearly 650 daily OPD visits.

Fever Hospital has witnessed a sharp increase in patient visits, with OPD numbers rising from an average of 600 to 850 patients per day in the past few weeks. This spike is attributed to the growing number of dengue and viral fever cases in the region.

Recent data highlights the severity of the situation: between June and August, Telangana reported a total of 4,395 confirmed dengue cases, with 85% to 90% of these cases coming from Hyderabad alone. In August, Hyderabad reported 1,751 dengue cases, while the neighboring districts of Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri recorded 310 and 399 cases, respectively. Alarmingly, at least five deaths have been linked to dengue.

With more rainfall expected, Dr. B Ravinder Naik, Director of Public Health, issued a public warning on Wednesday, urging residents to take preventive measures seriously to curb the spread of the disease.

Former Health Minister T Harish Rao criticized the State government on social media platform X, pointing out that they had warned of such a crisis a month ago. He emphasized the need for the timely release of funds to conduct preventive measures across all districts, stressing that the impact of seasonal diseases can only be minimized by taking proactive steps before the monsoon season begins.

Dengue Cases in 2024:

  • January-April: 678 cases
  • May: 113 cases
  • June: 1,078 cases
  • July: 1,461 cases
  • August: 1,856 cases

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Addresses Minority Issues During India Visit

0

New Delhi:- Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, currently on a visit to India, has raised concerns about the treatment of minorities in the country. He stated that the Indian government faces “serious issues” that affect minorities and religious sentiments. He expressed hope that India would continue to play its rightful role in addressing these concerns.

Speaking at an event organized by the Indian Council of World Affairs, Anwar Ibrahim said, “I do not deny the fact that you (the Indian government) face some serious issues that affect minorities or religious sentiments. But we hope that India will continue to play its proper role in dealing with these issues.”

He further added, “I also mentioned to Prime Minister Modi that there was a time when Nehru, Zhou Enlai (former Chinese Premier), Sukarno (Indonesia’s first President), and Julius Nyerere (former President of Tanzania) fought together against colonialism and imperialism, standing up for the Global South to ensure that we recognize humanity, freedom, and the dignity of men and women.”

This statement comes at a time when bilateral relations between India and Malaysia are gradually improving. In 2019, when India abrogated Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Malaysia’s then Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad criticized the move. Mahathir also targeted India regarding the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAA), leading to India’s strong objection and subsequent halting of oil exports to Malaysia.

While relations between India and Malaysia have been improving, the controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik remains a significant obstacle. Naik fled India in 2016 and was granted asylum by Malaysia in 2018. He is accused in India of making provocative speeches, money laundering, and promoting terrorism. In 2019, India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a chargesheet against Naik in a terror funding case.

Anwar Ibrahim’s Statement on Zakir Naik

During his visit to India, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made a significant statement regarding Zakir Naik. He said that if India provides sufficient evidence against Naik, his government might consider handing him over to India.

Anwar Ibrahim noted that during his discussions with Prime Minister Modi, the issue was not brought up and emphasized that it should not affect the bilateral relations between the two countries.

He stated, “First of all, the Indian side did not raise this issue. Prime Minister Modi brought it up long ago, a few years back. We do not condone terrorism, and we have been firm on this, working together with India on many counter-terrorism issues. However, I believe this issue should not stand in the way of advancing our bilateral relations.”

Heavy Rains Lash Hyderabad, One Man Washed Away; IMD Predicts More Rainfall – Watch Farhaad Production’s Video Report

0

Hyderabad was hit by sudden, heavy rains early today, causing widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city. Tragically, a man in his mid-40s was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded road. His body was later found in the Ramnagar area, according to local police. The Hyderabad Traffic Department has issued alerts, advising commuters to avoid waterlogged roads and take alternate routes.

The Telangana daily weather report, issued at 8:30 am, indicated that several areas experienced very heavy rainfall. Yadadri Bhuvanagiri was the worst hit, with Yadagirigutta recording the highest rainfall at 17 cm, followed by Maddur in Narayanpet district, which received 14 cm. Other districts, including Medchal Malkajgiri, Wanaparthy, Hanumakonda, Khammam, Mahabubnagar, and Rangareddy, also recorded significant rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Met Centre in Hyderabad has forecast more heavy rain at isolated places in several districts of Telangana until 8:30 am on August 21. Districts under alert include Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, and Narayanpet. The IMD has also warned of potential thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) in some areas.

In Hyderabad, the rains have caused severe waterlogging in multiple areas, including between Dabeerpura Darwaza and Dabeerpura Bridge, where traffic has slowed significantly. The Mirchowk Traffic Police, along with the Disaster Response Force (DRF), are actively working to clear the water and manage traffic flow. Similar situations have been reported near the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) area and Asif Nagar, where DRF teams are on the ground.

Traffic congestion has also been reported at Malakpet Gunj towards Reliance Digital, Nalgonda X Road, and Chaderghat X Road due to the heavy rains. Additionally, ongoing construction of the Amberpet Flyover has led to traffic diversions from 6 No Junction to Golnaka Junction on NH-163. Commuters are advised to be aware of these diversions and plan their routes accordingly.

The forecast for Hyderabad over the next week predicts generally cloudy skies with intermittent rain or thundershowers. Temperatures are expected to range between 22°C and 33°C, with the heaviest rainfall likely on August 24 and 25.

A cyclonic circulation over Rayalaseema and a trough extending from the Arabian Sea to the Comorin area are contributing to these weather conditions. As a result, Telangana, along with parts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, is expected to experience widespread light to moderate rainfall, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas.
