Atishi Sworn in as Delhi’s Third Woman Chief Minister, 17th in India’s History

0

Delhi , September 21 2024 :- In a historic moment for Delhi, AAP leader Atishi was sworn in as the city’s third woman Chief Minister, following in the footsteps of BJP’s Sushma Swaraj and Congress’ Sheila Dikshit. Atishi, known for her dynamic leadership, is also the youngest to assume this role in the national capital. She now becomes the 17th woman Chief Minister in India’s post-independence history, marking another milestone in Indian politics.

Atishi, a first-time legislator, has played a crucial role within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), especially during Arvind Kejriwal’s time in Tihar Jail amid the excise policy case investigation. She rose through the ranks of the AAP, managing its operations in challenging times, and her dedication has been key to her ascendancy to the top political position in Delhi. Despite her brief tenure due to upcoming Assembly elections in February, her appointment symbolizes the growing influence of women in Indian politics.

Atishi’s induction into the Chief Minister’s post is part of a long tradition of powerful women leaders in Indian states. Notable predecessors include Sucheta Kripalani, India’s first woman Chief Minister, who led Uttar Pradesh from 1963 to 1967, and Mamata Banerjee, who is currently serving her third term as West Bengal’s Chief Minister. Other trailblazing leaders include Mayawati of Uttar Pradesh, J. Jayalalithaa of Tamil Nadu, and Vasundhara Raje of Rajasthan.

Delhi’s previous women Chief Ministers also left lasting legacies. Sushma Swaraj served a brief term in 1998, and Sheila Dikshit, Delhi’s longest-serving CM, led the capital for an impressive 15 years, from 1998 to 2013. Atishi now steps into this esteemed legacy, tasked with leading the capital through a transitional period.

Her leadership is expected to resonate not only with AAP supporters but also across a broad spectrum of voters in Delhi. As the youngest woman Chief Minister of Delhi, her journey will be closely observed as Delhi prepares for its next elections in early 2024.

Atishi’s rise to power reflects the increasing prominence of women in the Indian political landscape, as she joins the ranks of formidable leaders like Vasundhara Raje, Nandini Satpathy (Odisha), Mehbooba Mufti (Jammu and Kashmir), and Rabri Devi (Bihar), all of whom have shaped the political discourse in their respective states.

Pune Sanitation Truck Falls Into Sinkhole, Driver Narrowly Escapes Unharmed

Watch: Entire Truck Sinks Into the Ground in Dramatic Video
“सरकार ने सीधे पाताल में जाने का रास्ता बनाया है”

Pune, September 20: In a dramatic incident on Friday afternoon, a Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) truck used for cleaning drainage systems sank into a sinkhole that suddenly opened near the City Post Office in the Budhwar Peth area of Pune. The driver of the vehicle escaped unharmed, thanks to the quick response of a local bystander who helped him out of the sinking truck just in time.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred at around 4 PM in the busy Budhwar Peth locality, which is one of Pune’s most densely populated areas. The jetting machine truck, which is part of the civic sanitation fleet, was carrying out routine work when the ground beneath it collapsed. The surface, composed of interlocking cement blocks, gave way, revealing an old well that had been previously covered with a concrete slab. The truck’s weight caused the slab to break, resulting in the sinkhole.

In a video shared by news agency PTI, the large vehicle can be seen gradually sinking into the hole as passersby watched in shock. As the truck’s rear began to slide into the pit, a local rushed to the scene and managed to pull the driver from the cab just before the vehicle sank further.

Response from Officials

PMC Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale provided a statement, clarifying that the accident occurred on the premises of the post office, not a public road. He confirmed that there was an old well at the location, and the slab that covered it had deteriorated over time. The weight of the truck was too much for the weakened structure, leading to its collapse.

“Since this was a drainage vehicle, its weight contributed to the incident. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and the truck was safely removed using two cranes. We are now conducting an investigation to assess the structural integrity of the surrounding area and prevent future incidents,” Bhosale said in an interview with news agency ANI.

Retrieval and Future Precautions

Efforts to retrieve the truck began immediately, with fire brigade teams and PMC officials coordinating to lift the vehicle from the pit. It took several hours to fully remove the truck, with two cranes deployed to complete the task. The area was cordoned off to ensure public safety, and an inspection of the site is underway to determine whether other parts of the surface are at risk of collapse.

The PMC is also expected to conduct a city-wide survey of older wells and other potentially hazardous spots that have been covered up over time, especially in high-traffic areas. Local residents have raised concerns about the safety of such sites, and calls for more stringent maintenance protocols have grown louder in the wake of this incident.

Social Media Reactions

The incident quickly went viral on social media, with several users sharing videos and memes. Ranvijay Singh, a prominent social media influencer, posted the video on platform ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) with the caption, “सरकार ने सीधे पाताल में जाने का रास्ता बनाया है” (The government has created a direct route to the underworld), adding a humorous twist to the otherwise alarming event.

While there were no casualties, the incident has brought attention to the need for regular inspections of older infrastructure in urban areas, especially in cities like Pune where rapid development often coexists with aging civic structures.

Hyderabad & Secunderabad Lashed by Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms, Flooded Roads Cause Major Disruptions

0

Hyderabad, September 20 2024 :- Late on Friday evening, September 20, both Hyderabad and Secunderabad witnessed heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, offering much-needed relief after a scorching day. The sudden downpour, following a 10-day dry spell, left various parts of both cities waterlogged, causing major disruptions.

The rain, accompanied by strong winds, caught many by surprise. Popular weather enthusiast “Telangana Weatherman” had earlier predicted varied intensity of rain across the state, and the IMD Hyderabad forecasted moderate spells, with rainfall expected at 1-2 cm per hour.

In areas such as Ameerpet, Abids, Khairatabad , Lakdi ka pul, Mallepally and Vijaynagar colony in Hyderabad, as well as Tarnaka and Malkajgiri in Secunderabad, the streets turned into makeshift lakes. Residents in low-lying areas like Alwal, Begumpet, and Nampally reported water entering their homes. The city’s drainage systems struggled, with overflowing manholes posing a serious threat. In some places, like Panjagutta and Uppal, manhole covers rose above the street level due to water pressure, creating a dangerous situation. Residents have urged the GHMC to address these infrastructure challenges before any accidents occur.

While the rain provided respite from the heat, it also caused severe inconvenience. Commuters in areas like Banjara Hills, Kukatpally, and Secunderabad Railway Station faced challenges reaching their destinations due to flooded roads. Reports of power outages came from Sainikpuri, Old City, and Madhapur. Water seeped into metro stations, particularly in Miyapur and Paradise, compounding the difficulties for the public.

As Hyderabad and Secunderabad deal with the aftermath of the rain, authorities are working to restore normalcy. However, the storm has exposed the pressing need for better infrastructure in these twin cities.

Supreme Court’s YouTube Channel Hacked, Cryptocurrency Videos Appear

0

New Delhi September 20, 2024 :- In a major security breach, the YouTube channel of the Supreme Court of India has been hacked, with videos related to cryptocurrency replacing court proceedings. The channel, which usually streams live hearings of crucial cases, now features a video titled, “Brad Garlinghouse: Ripple Responds To The SEC’s $2 Billion Fine! XRP PRICE PREDICTION.” This video promotes XRP, a cryptocurrency developed by US-based Ripple Labs.

The incident came to light as the Supreme Court was preparing to hear a significant plea from the Muslim side in the ongoing Shahi Idgah-Krishna Janmabhoomi case. The hacked content has raised concerns, especially since the channel is a critical source for the public to access live proceedings of important constitutional bench cases.

Reports indicate that the hackers have made earlier court hearing videos private, further disrupting public access to past proceedings. Recently, the channel live-streamed the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.

This breach comes after a unanimous decision by the full court, led by former Chief Justice UU Lalit, to live-stream all constitution bench hearings following a landmark 2018 verdict aimed at promoting transparency in the judicial process.

The Supreme Court’s IT department is currently investigating the matter and working on restoring the channel to its normal operations.
