Hindenburg Controversy: Congress to Stage Nationwide Protest on August 22, Demands SEBI Chief’s Resignation and JPC Probe

0

New Delhi: The Congress has announced a nationwide protest on August 22, demanding the resignation of SEBI Chief Madhabi Puri Buch and the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate the Adani issue. This decision comes amidst the ongoing controversy triggered by allegations from Hindenburg Research against the SEBI Chairperson.

The announcement was made following a meeting led by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, which included general secretaries, state unit chiefs, and AICC state in-charges. The meeting focused on election preparedness and key national issues.

Kharge, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the alleged nexus between SEBI and Adani, stating that the security of small investors in the stock market must not be compromised. He urged the Modi government to seek the resignation of the SEBI Chairperson and establish a JPC to investigate the matter.

Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal briefed reporters after the meeting, confirming the party’s decision to hold a nationwide agitation on August 22.

The controversy began when Hindenburg Research, on August 10, accused SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband, Dhaval Buch, of having stakes in offshore funds involved in the alleged Adani money-laundering scandal. These allegations have sparked a political dispute, with Congress and other INDIA bloc parties calling for Buch’s removal and a JPC probe, while the BJP has accused the opposition of attempting to create financial instability.

Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband have dismissed the accusations as baseless, arguing that Hindenburg Research is attacking SEBI’s credibility rather than addressing a showcause notice issued to it for “violations in India.” SEBI has stated that the allegations against the Adani Group were “duly investigated” and that the Chairperson recused herself from matters involving potential conflicts of interest when necessary. The Adani Group has also denied the charges, describing them as malicious and based on manipulated public information, and asserting that it has no commercial ties with the SEBI Chairperson or her husband.

Calcutta High Court Orders CBI Probe in Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case

0

On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation into the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The incident occurred on August 9, and the court has directed the local police to hand over all related documents to the CBI by 10 AM on Wednesday.

This decision follows a series of protests, including a demonstration by doctors and medical students at AIIMS Delhi. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) had earlier called for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services starting Tuesday, expressing solidarity with the victim and demanding justice.

In a related development, the Calcutta High Court questioned the appointment of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, who had resigned after the incident, citing moral responsibility. Dr. Ghosh was controversially appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital shortly after his resignation, which led to protests. The court has now directed him to submit a leave application by 3 PM on Tuesday or face an order to vacate the position.

The victim, a PGT doctor, was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9. The investigation revealed that she had been raped and murdered, with her body showing signs of a struggle. The victim’s family has alleged foul play, demanding justice.

In response to the incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written to the health minister, calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances that allowed the crime to occur and urging measures to enhance the safety of doctors, particularly women, in the workplace.

BRS to Study Gurukul Conditions Amidst Concerns

0

Sircilla, August 12 — BRS Working President KT Rama Rao announced on Monday that the party will form a committee to address issues in the State’s Gurukuls. The committee, chaired by BRS leader RS Praveen Kumar, will review conditions at approximately 20 Gurukuls and submit its findings within five days. Praveen Kumar, known for his role in the development of these institutions, will oversee the examination of facilities and recommend improvements for student welfare.

Rama Rao’s announcement followed a visit to the family of Class VI student Anirudh, who recently died at the Peddapur Gurukul in Jagtial district. The BRS delegation extended their condolences to the family in Racharlaboppapur of Yellareddypet mandal.

Rama Rao highlighted a troubling trend, noting that 36 students have died over the past eight months—some due to food poisoning, others from snakebites, and several under suspicious circumstances. During this period, around 500 students required hospitalization due to toxic or stale food. He urged the State government to provide support to the affected families and take preventive measures to avoid future incidents, emphasizing that the issue should not be politicized.

Rama Rao stressed the importance of quality food in Gurukuls, citing improvements made under the previous BRS government at IIIT Basara. He called for surprise inspections by Collectors and officials to ensure cleanliness and food quality at social welfare hostels. He also reiterated the need for the State government to act as a guardian for the six and a half lakh students residing in government hostels, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Waqf Amendment Bill Sparks Concerns Within TDP Amid Opposition Protests

‘Collector Raj Manzoor Nahin’: TDP Leaders Urge Revisions to Safeguard Waqf Interests

Before diving into this question, let’s review the developments surrounding the Waqf Bill. In the recently concluded budget session of Parliament, the BJP-led NDA government introduced the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, which has sparked protests from the opposition India Alliance. Additionally, Muslim members of TDP have raised strong objections to several provisions of the bill. It is important to note that TDP is a significant part of the NDA government.

TDP Minority Cell General Secretary Fathullah Mohammad has described certain parts of the bill as “alarming” and urged his party to consult with Muslim leaders before supporting it in Parliament.

In an interview with the Indian Express, Fathullah Mohammad expressed his concerns. When asked about his reservations regarding the Waqf Bill, he stated, “There are at least 40 provisions in this bill that are detrimental to Muslims and the functioning of the Waqf Board. While TDP has welcomed the bill, the changes made in the draft are concerning.”

He added, “The purpose of the amendments is to strengthen the law, but instead, the draft weakens everything. There are five or six key points that need attention.” He highlighted one issue in particular, stating, “There was a provision to include two Muslim MPs as members of the Central Waqf Council. This rule has been removed, and instead, two women are to be appointed. While we have no objection to this, the fact of them being Muslims has been disregarded. The Waqf Board’s role is to protect and manage religious sites such as mosques and dargahs. How can this be entrusted to non-Muslims?”

He also pointed out that “weakening the Waqf Tribunal, which is appointed by the government and headed by a serving or retired judge, is another point of contention. The Tribunal ensures that Waqf properties are protected from encroachments. Now, the bill removes this authority. They may follow the state government’s orders, leading to what could be termed ‘Collector Raj’ over Waqf land.”

Furthermore, he expressed concerns about the proposal to include two non-Muslims in the State Waqf Board, which he believes would undermine the Waqf’s purpose and could lead to further encroachments on Waqf properties.

What does Chandrababu Naidu think?

In response to this question, TDP Leader Fathullah Mohammad stated, “We in the TDP welcome the amendments in the bill. We are not against it, but we believe that the Waqf Board should be strengthened through these changes, not the other way around. I have raised this issue with our MPs and party leadership and met with Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Secretary M. Abdul Rafiq, Assistant Secretary Inamur Rahman, and retired IAS officer Haseeb Rahman to discuss our concerns. Our MPs contacted the Chief Minister, who advised sending the bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).”

Although TDP is a partner in the NDA, we believe there is room for discussion, and the outcome should be acceptable to all. It is a positive sign that Naidu understands our concerns and suggested sending the bill to the JPC.

It is important to note that Muslims constitute about 12-13% of Andhra Pradesh’s population, so TDP wants to ensure that the community is not alienated by supporting the “controversial” parts of the proposed bill. Concentrated in the Rayalaseema region, this community is considered a significant vote bank for TDP and played a key role in ensuring its landslide victory in the recently held Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Tungabhadra Dam Gate Washed Away: Flood Alert in Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh

0

Hyderabad: A flood alert has been issued for areas downstream of the Tungabhadra Dam after one of its 33 gates was washed away late on Saturday night due to heavy floods. The incident has put the disaster management authorities on high alert, especially for residents along the banks of the Krishna River in Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.

The 19th gate, which had undergone maintenance in May, snapped while the dam was discharging an increased flow of water. Currently, around one lakh cusecs of water are being released from the dam, which holds 105 TMC of water.

In response to the incident, all 33 gates of the dam were opened, releasing one lakh cusecs of floodwater. The discharge rate is expected to double soon to facilitate the replacement of the broken gate. This is the first significant crest gate failure in the dam’s 70-year history, attributed to a worn-out chain link.

Authorities have urged residents in riverbank towns and villages, particularly in Mantralayam, Kosigi, and Kouthalam, to remain cautious and avoid streams and canals. With inflows and outflows around 31,000 cusecs at the time of the incident, dam officials plan to discharge up to two lakh cusecs in the coming days to lower the reservoir by about 50 TMC.

The Tungabhadra Dam, an inter-state project managed by the Tungabhadra Board, plays a crucial role in regulating water supplies to Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana. Official teams from Hyderabad and Amaravathi are heading to the site.

The released water will contribute to the inflows into Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar, and Pulichintala projects downstream. The Tungabhadra Dam, a joint project between the erstwhile Kingdom of Hyderabad and the Madras Presidency, was completed in 1953.

Telangana Discom Halts QR Code Payments Amid Electricity Bill Fraud Concerns

UPI Payments to Resume in Two Weeks

Hyderabad: In light of rising cyber fraud incidents, the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) has temporarily suspended its plan to introduce QR code-based payments for electricity bills. The facility, initially designed to simplify the payment process by eliminating the need for entering the Unique Service Connection (USC) number, has been put on hold due to concerns over potential misuse by cybercriminals.

Last month, TGSPDCL had announced the discontinuation of direct bill payments through third-party apps (UPIs) starting in August, with plans to replace this system with QR code payments. However, the company has reconsidered this decision after receiving reports of cyber fraud targeting electricity consumers.

TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Ali Faruqui explained that the move to suspend QR codes was made to protect consumers from potential scams. “Cyber fraudsters could clone the QR codes and defraud unsuspecting consumers, leading to a major scam. To prevent this, we have decided against issuing QR codes along with the power bills,” he said.

The decision comes after multiple reports of fraudsters using SMS and WhatsApp messages to trick consumers into downloading malicious files or sharing personal information under the guise of electricity KYC updates. These scams have resulted in significant financial losses for some victims.

TGSPDCL has issued repeated warnings to consumers, urging them to avoid clicking on suspicious links and to use only authorized platforms for bill payments. The company is also working to resolve issues with UPI payments, with the goal of resuming this payment method within the next two weeks.

“We are actively addressing the concerns, and if all goes well, UPI payments will be available for power bills soon,” Faruqui added.
