Hyderabad, December 4, 2024: A stampede broke out during the premiere of Allu Arjun’s highly anticipated film Pushpa 2 at Sandhya Theatre, RTC Crossroads, leaving two people injured. The incident occurred late Wednesday night as fans rushed to catch a glimpse of the superstar.

Allu Arjun arrived at the theatre to greet fans and watch the premiere, but the excitement quickly turned chaotic. As the actor entered and waved to the crowd, fans surged forward, resulting in a stampede. Despite the presence of police deployed for crowd control, the situation escalated, forcing authorities to resort to a mild lathicharge to disperse the gathering.

Amid the chaos, a woman and a young boy were injured after being knocked down. Police officers promptly rescued the injured individuals, administered first aid, and rushed them to a nearby hospital. Their condition is reported to be stable.

The theatre premises were cordoned off, and its gates were closed to prevent further incidents. Additional police personnel were deployed to the scene to manage the crowd and ensure safety.

This incident draws parallels to a similar stampede during the 2021 release of Pushpa: The Rise, where overcrowding at several theatres across Telangana led to minor injuries and disruptions. The increasing trend of overcrowding at film premieres highlights the need for stricter crowd management measures during high-profile screenings.

Authorities have urged fans to cooperate during such events and assured them that additional safety protocols will be enforced to prevent such incidents in the future. Meanwhile, the police are investigating the lapses that led to Wednesday’s chaos.

5.3-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Telangana: Tremors Felt in Hyderabad

0

Hyderabad: Telangana experienced a rare seismic event on Wednesday morning when a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Mulugu district, with tremors felt in Hyderabad and parts of Andhra Pradesh. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported the earthquake at 7:27 AM IST, triggering panic among residents but causing no immediate casualties or major damage.

The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 85 km northeast of Warangal, at a depth of 40 km, according to NCS. The agency shared detailed coordinates on X (formerly Twitter):

“EQ of M: 5.3, On: 04/12/2024 07:27:02 IST, Lat: 18.44 N, Long: 80.24 E, Depth: 40 Km, Location: Mulugu, Telangana.”

Multiple Agencies Confirm Magnitude

While NCS measured the earthquake at 5.3 magnitude, reports from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) estimated it at 5.0 magnitude. Such variations are common as seismologists refine data post-event.

The tremors were described as light vibrations, affecting areas such as Warangal, Ramagundam, Mancherial, and Yellandu. Telangana Weatherman, a prominent user on X, remarked:

“For the first time in 20 years, Telangana experienced one of its strongest earthquakes, with Mulugu as the epicenter. Tremors were felt across the state, including Hyderabad.”

Rare Occurrence in a Low-Seismic Zone

Telangana, situated in Seismic Zone II, is generally considered a low-intensity earthquake zone. Seismic activity of this magnitude is unusual for the region, underscoring the need for increased awareness and preparedness.

India is categorized into four seismic zones based on earthquake risk:

  • Zone V: Very high risk
  • Zone IV: Severe risk
  • Zone III: Moderate risk
  • Zone II: Low risk

Approximately 59% of India’s landmass is earthquake-prone, with Zone II covering the lowest-risk areas, including most of Telangana.

Expert Analysis and Public Safety

Experts advise that while the earthquake did not cause significant damage, residents should stay cautious and avoid unsafe structures. The event has prompted authorities to assess the situation and strengthen disaster preparedness protocols.

The earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of seismic events, even in regions considered low-risk. Residents across the affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant.

Osmania University’s Arts College to Join Ranks of India’s Trademarked Icons

0

Hyderabad: The iconic Arts College building at Osmania University is on the path to becoming India’s third trademarked structure, following the Taj Mahal Hotel and the Bombay Stock Exchange. The trademark application, filed in April 2024, has been accepted for publication, with registration expected to conclude within 4-5 months, according to reports on Monday.

Historic Significance and Architectural Brilliance

Inaugurated in 1939 by Nizam VII Mir Osman Ali Khan, the Arts College building is renowned for its architectural grandeur, blending Ajanta and Ellora influences with Indo-Saracenic arches. Designed by Belgian architect Monsieur Jasper, the granite structure spans 164 rooms across 2.5 lakh square feet, making it a significant landmark in Hyderabad.

Trademarking Process and Purpose

The trademark application was filed by Subhajit Saha, a TM agent, with the guidance of Prof. G.B. Reddy, the founding Chair Professor of the DPIIR-IPR Chair at Osmania University. Prof. Reddy, an expert in Intellectual Property, has played a pivotal role in promoting this initiative.

Speaking about the trademarking effort, Saha expressed optimism that it would elevate the Arts College building to a brand status and inspire other architectural marvels in Telangana, such as T-HUB, T Works, and the Telangana Secretariat, to consider similar initiatives.

Preserving Heritage and Leveraging Opportunities

Trademarking the Arts College building will protect its unique design while opening avenues for commercial opportunities, including branded merchandise and souvenirs. The initiative aims to preserve the building’s cultural and architectural heritage while ensuring its relevance in modern branding.

Global and National Context

The practice of trademarking iconic buildings originated in the United States, with examples such as the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the New York Stock Exchange. Globally, landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Sydney Opera House have also secured trademark protection.

In India, this growing trend reflects a recognition of architectural heritage as intellectual property, blending tradition with modern economic potential. Osmania University’s Arts College is set to become a trailblazer in this movement, adding a new dimension to heritage conservation in the country.
