Canada Implements Two-Year Cap on International Student Visas, Impacting Prospective Indian Students

0

In response to an escalating housing crisis, Canada has officially announced a two-year cap on new international student visas. Immigration Minister Marc Miller revealed that the cap aims to maintain a sustainable level of temporary residence in the country, with a national application intake limit set for two years starting in 2024. The move is expected to significantly affect Indians planning to pursue higher education in Canada, where nearly 3.2 lakh Indians are already residing under student visas.

Details:

  • Reduction in New Visas: The data provided by Minister Marc Miller indicates that there will be a 35% reduction in new student visas for the year 2024. This translates to 364,000 new permits approved, down from around 560,000 issued in the previous year.
  • Impact on Indian Students: With more than 800,000 international students granted temporary study visas in 2022, and 40% of those admitted to Canadian institutions being from India, the move is expected to have a substantial impact on Indian students aspiring to study in Canada.
  • Provincial Allocation: Provinces and territories will have the authority to decide how permits are distributed among universities and colleges within their jurisdictions. Minister Miller mentioned that some regions may experience up to a 50% reduction in permits.
  • Attestation Letter Requirement: The federal government will now require international students applying for a permit to provide an attestation letter from a province or territory, adding an additional step to the application process.
  • Reassessment in 2025: The number of permits to be issued in 2025 will be reassessed at the end of 2024, allowing for potential adjustments based on the evolving situation.

This decision comes amid mounting pressure on the Canadian government to address the increasing numbers of non-permanent residents entering the country. The housing crisis, coupled with concerns about sustainable levels of temporary residence, has prompted these measures to control the influx of international students.

Telangana Minister Komati Reddy Venkat Reddy Unveils Anticipated Shift in Political Landscape

Hyderabad :- In a momentous announcement, Telangana Minister Komati Reddy Venkat Reddy anticipates a significant shift in political dynamics. He has revealed that 30 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from the BRS party are on the brink of aligning with the Congress after the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This disclosure carries potential implications for the regional political equilibrium, suggesting a noteworthy alteration in power dynamics and alliances.

If this scenario unfolds, it would mark a pivotal chapter in Telangana’s political narrative. Despite securing a bumper majority and subsequent attempts by the TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samithi) to absorb several Congress leaders into its fold with the intention of diminishing the Congress’s influence in Telangana, the political landscape remained in flux.

Following these events, K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), the leader of TRS, embarked on a strategic move to elevate his party to the national level. This involved rebranding the TRS to BRS, signaling a renewed interest in national politics. However, the State Assembly elections proved challenging for BRS, resulting in a decisive defeat. The electorate, in a significant majority, favored the Congress, presenting an opportunity for the party to form the government in Telangana.

Today, Telangana Minister Komati Reddy Venkat Reddy’s statement alludes to the repetition of this political saga. If the 30 BRS party MLAs align with the Congress, it could reshape the political landscape, underscoring the fluidity and unpredictability of political alliances and power dynamics.”

Hyderabad Metro Rail Expansion Gets Green Signal from Chief Minister Revanth Reddy

0

Hyderabad :- Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, fresh from a five-day foreign visit, granted approval on Monday for the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. The expansion will encompass a network connecting the Shamshabad airport from the four corners of the city, covering a distance of 70 km under Phase-2.

Emphasizing the significance of the new routes, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy highlighted the aim of providing hassle-free transportation for all, from common citizens to affluent commuters. He instructed officials to expedite the project, addressing the pressing need for improved airport connectivity amid escalating traffic congestion and anticipating future demands for public transportation.

Reddy took a decisive step by scrapping the airport Metro Rail routes from Raidurg proposed by the previous BRS government. He expressed dissatisfaction with the earlier plan, deeming it impractical for a majority of the population, as passengers would have to reach Raidurg before switching to the proposed airport line.

Acting on Reddy’s directives, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) formulated a new route map, extending the Metro Rail network to different areas and ensuring connectivity to the airport. The primary objective of this revised plan is to offer cost-effective public transportation to a larger segment of the population. In contrast, the previous government’s proposal was criticized for incurring substantial expenditure while benefiting fewer people, mainly serving real estate interests.

The Congress government’s commitment to serving the poor and middle classes is underscored by the new routes. The current Hyderabad Metro Rail spans 69 km across three corridors, and in Phase 2, the network will extend from Secunderabad Jubilee Bus Station to MGBS, reaching up to Chandrayangutta crossroads. Additionally, four new corridors will be developed to further enhance the metro rail network.

The approval of this ambitious expansion marks a significant milestone in the city’s public transportation infrastructure, aligning with the government’s vision to provide efficient and accessible metro rail services to a wider demographic.

PM Modi Unveils Ayodhya Ram Mandir

0

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a temple dedicated to Hindu god Ram in the contentious city of Ayodhya. The temple replaces a 16th-century mosque demolished by Hindu mobs in 1992, an event that led to riots resulting in nearly 2,000 deaths.

The inauguration witnessed the presence of top film stars, cricketers, and a celebratory atmosphere in Ayodhya. However, notable Hindu seers and a majority of the opposition boycotted the event, alleging political motives behind Modi’s involvement.

With general elections looming, critics accuse Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of leveraging the temple for political gain in a predominantly Hindu nation. Some argue that the government is exploiting a religious celebration in a country constitutionally defined as secular, causing anxiety and painful memories among Muslims, India’s largest minority.

The live televised ceremony featured Modi participating in religious rituals alongside priests and Mohan Bhagwat, head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological foundation of Hindu nationalist parties. Modi proclaimed the day as historic, stating, “After years of struggle and countless sacrifices, Lord Ram has arrived [home].”

The temple, constructed at a cost of $217 million, saw only its ground floor inaugurated, with completion expected by year-end. The ambitious project is part of a $3 billion city revamp.

Built on a decades-long Hindu nationalist promise, the temple’s construction signifies a pivotal moment in Indian politics. Many Hindus believe the Babri mosque was erected by Muslim invaders on the ruins of a Hindu temple marking the birthplace of the deity Ram.

Tens of thousands of chanting Hindu devotees celebrated the event, with helicopters showering flower petals on the temple. Saffron flags and images of Lord Ram adorned the streets, accompanied by banners featuring Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Renowned figures, including Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, attended. The ceremony, named Pran Pratishtha, lasted about an hour, emphasizing Hindu rituals believed to infuse sacred life into the temple’s sanctum.

In 2019, the Supreme Court allocated the disputed land to Hindus after protracted legal battles following the mosque’s demolition. Muslims were allotted a plot outside the city for a mosque, yet construction has not commenced.

While some in Ayodhya acknowledge Hindus’ right to build the temple per the Supreme Court’s decision, others express mixed emotions about it being constructed at the expense of the mosque.

The three-storey temple, made of pink sandstone and black granite, spans 7.2 acres. A specially commissioned 51-inch statue of the deity was unveiled last week. Authorities deployed thousands of police for the event, urging pilgrims to watch the ceremony on television.

Despite the monumental occasion, religious seers contested the rituals, arguing against performing them in an incomplete temple. Opposition leaders also abstained, and some states organized alternative plans for the day.

As Ayodhya anticipates over 150,000 daily visitors once the temple is fully ready, extensive preparations, including new infrastructure, hotels, and transportation, are underway. However, concerns arise as locals report demolitions of homes and religious structures to accommodate the city’s transformation into a “world-class” pilgrimage destination.

“Watch the video// Rahul Gandhi Stopped from Entering Assam Temple: Political Controversy Unfolds”

0

In a surprising turn of events, Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi encountered obstacles during his attempt to visit Assam’s Batadrava Than, the birthplace of saint Srimanta Sankardeva. This development transpired a day after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma suggested that Gandhi postpone his visit until after the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, citing concerns about “unnecessary competition.”

Expressing disappointment, Gandhi, currently traversing Assam as part of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, found himself barred from the temple despite receiving an invitation. Authorities remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind their decision.

“We were invited to visit the temple, and now they are telling us that we can’t. We won’t force our way in. We are on our yatra and simply want to understand why we are being stopped. We are not here to disturb anyone; we were invited,” Gandhi emphasized.

In a video, Gandhi can be seen questioning the police about the denial, asking, “What is the issue, brother? Can I go and see the barricades? What mistake have I made that I am not allowed inside the temple?” Subsequently, he staged a sit-in protest against the police’s actions.

The shrine’s management advised Gandhi to visit after 3 pm due to the ongoing Pran Prathistha event. Jogendra Narayan Dev Mahanta, the President of Batadrava Than management committee, explained their preference for Gandhi not to visit during the ceremony to avoid potential complications in welcoming him.

“At that time, we do not want Rahul Gandhi to come here because there may be some difficulties in the process of welcoming him. He can come tomorrow after 3 pm, and we will be able to give him a grand welcome,” Mahanta stated.

On the preceding day, Chief Minister Sarma urged Gandhi to abstain from visiting the shrine during the Ram Temple consecration ceremony, expressing concerns about the potential negative portrayal of Assam.

In a related development, the Congress party plans to protest against the recent stone-pelting incident on Jairam Ramesh’s convoy in Assam, labeling it an instance of “BJP’s fascism and hooliganism.” Congress leader KC Venugopal condemned the incident and called for nationwide protests against what he perceives as an assault on democracy in Assam by the ruling BJP.

Adding to the controversy, Congress leader KC Venugopal tweeted, “Today the BJP stopped Rahul ji from going to Batadrava Satra, despite prior permission. We have entered a new phase of democracy where the BJP will decide who should go to a temple and at what time. This dictatorial regime must realize that its days are numbered. People of India will not allow such authoritarianism. We will not budge till we are allowed to bow before Sri Sri Srimanta Sankardeva.”
