Hyderabad :- Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, fresh from a five-day foreign visit, granted approval on Monday for the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. The expansion will encompass a network connecting the Shamshabad airport from the four corners of the city, covering a distance of 70 km under Phase-2.
Emphasizing the significance of the new routes, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy highlighted the aim of providing hassle-free transportation for all, from common citizens to affluent commuters. He instructed officials to expedite the project, addressing the pressing need for improved airport connectivity amid escalating traffic congestion and anticipating future demands for public transportation.
Reddy took a decisive step by scrapping the airport Metro Rail routes from Raidurg proposed by the previous BRS government. He expressed dissatisfaction with the earlier plan, deeming it impractical for a majority of the population, as passengers would have to reach Raidurg before switching to the proposed airport line.
Acting on Reddy’s directives, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) formulated a new route map, extending the Metro Rail network to different areas and ensuring connectivity to the airport. The primary objective of this revised plan is to offer cost-effective public transportation to a larger segment of the population. In contrast, the previous government’s proposal was criticized for incurring substantial expenditure while benefiting fewer people, mainly serving real estate interests.
The Congress government’s commitment to serving the poor and middle classes is underscored by the new routes. The current Hyderabad Metro Rail spans 69 km across three corridors, and in Phase 2, the network will extend from Secunderabad Jubilee Bus Station to MGBS, reaching up to Chandrayangutta crossroads. Additionally, four new corridors will be developed to further enhance the metro rail network.
The approval of this ambitious expansion marks a significant milestone in the city’s public transportation infrastructure, aligning with the government’s vision to provide efficient and accessible metro rail services to a wider demographic.
