0

In a dramatic scene near the European Parliament, farmers expressed their frustrations, hurling eggs and stones while igniting fires. The protests aimed to draw attention to challenges like taxes and rising costs, urging EU leaders for support.

Farming Crisis Grips Europe

Barriers around the parliament were targeted, resulting in clashes with police deploying water hoses and tear gas. A statue near the gathering point was damaged.

Key Grievances

Farmers from various EU countries, including Italy and Spain, united to highlight concerns about insufficient payments, high taxes, and challenging green regulations. Unfair competition from abroad further fueled their discontent.

“No farmers, no food,” read a banner, emphasizing the vital role of farmers in the food supply chain.

Widespread Disruption

Approximately 1,300 tractors clogged major Brussels streets, causing significant disruptions in the EU’s heart. Riot-gear-clad security personnel guarded European Council headquarters where leaders convened for a summit.

Farmers sought recognition for their role in sustaining the agricultural sector, displaying banners advocating for support.

Political Landscape

With European Parliament elections looming, the far-right, viewing farmers as a crucial constituency, is anticipated to gain traction. Farmers believe this timing offers a unique opportunity to voice their concerns and garner support.

“European elections are coming, and politicians are super nervous,” remarked Jose Maria Castilla, representing the Spanish Farmers’ Union Asaja.

Political Responses

While the farmers’ crisis isn’t officially on the EU summit agenda, leaders acknowledged the need to address farmers’ grievances. Measures such as limiting farm imports and easing environmental regulations have already been proposed.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo emphasized the importance of ensuring fair prices for high-quality farm products.

International Dimensions

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, addressing farmers’ concerns, called for new leaders representing the people’s interests. The ongoing summit discussions include attempts to secure stable financing for Ukraine, adding complexity to the broader political landscape.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar echoed French President Emmanuel Macron’s opposition to a trade deal with the Mercosur group, aligning with farmers’ demands.

Economic Impact

Beyond political discourse, the protests have tangible consequences. In France, where farmers have been active, transport and logistics sectors report a 30% revenue loss due to delays caused by blockades.

“All transport firms are impacted… because we are not able to deliver on time,” noted Eric Hemar, head of a federation of transport and logistics employers.

Union Budget 2024-25 Draws Sharp Criticism for Neglecting Minorities; Shabbir Ali Questions, “Is This ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’?”

0

Hyderabad :- In a scathing critique of the Union Budget 2024-25, Congress senior leader and Advisor to the Telangana Government (SC, ST, BC, and Minorities), Mohammed Ali Shabbir, expressed deep disappointment, particularly concerning the allocation for minorities.

Shabbir Ali highlighted that the BJP Government’s allocation for minority welfare stands at a mere Rs 3,183.24 crore, representing a paltry increase of Rs 86 crore from the previous year. He underscored the nominal percentage of 0.000668% of the total budget allocated for minorities, emphasizing the inadequate provision for the welfare of a population constituting over 15% of the country.

Expressing concern, Shabbir Ali condemned the budget cuts, particularly in schemes related to minority education. Notable reductions include allocations for Education Empowerment, with an overall decrease from Rs 1,689 crore to Rs 1,575.72 crore. He brought attention to specific cuts in various schemes, such as Merit-cum-Means Scholarship, Maulana Azad National Fellowship, Free Coaching for Minorities, and others.

The Congress leader criticized the scrapping of the scheme supporting minority students clearing Prelims for UPSC, SSC, State Public Service Commissions, among others, after a meager spending of Rs 1.66 crore in 2022-23. He also lamented the substantial reduction in schemes under Skill Development and Livelihoods, including the removal of Nai Manzil, USTTAD, and others.

Furthermore, Shabbir Ali highlighted reductions in allocations for Central Sector Schemes/Projects and the overall decrease in the Special Programmes of Minorities from Rs 26.10 crore to Rs 26 crore. He pointed out that the allocated amount for minorities’ welfare in 2024-25 is lower than what was allocated in 2013-14 by the Congress-led UPA Government.

Drawing a stark contrast, Shabbir Ali noted the significant strides made during the UPA-led Congress government, including the establishment of a separate Ministry for Minority Affairs in 2006 and consistent budgetary increases. He concluded by asserting that the current budget exposes the hollowness of Prime Minister Modi’s claims on ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.’

TSRTC Announces Discontinuation of Family-24 and T-6 Tickets in Greater Hyderabad Region

0

Hyderabad : – In a noteworthy move, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has taken a significant decision to discontinue the Family-24 (F-24) and T-6 tickets within the Greater Hyderabad region. According to an official announcement by the TSRTC management, the cancellation of these tickets will be effective from Monday, January 01, 2024.

Initially introduced for the convenience of family members and friends, the F-24 tickets allowed a family of four to travel for 24 hours at a cost of Rs. 300 on weekends and holidays. Meanwhile, the T-6 tickets provided 6 hours of travel between 10 am and 4 pm for women and senior citizens at a discounted rate of Rs. 50. It is noteworthy that the prices of these special tickets were recently reduced by the RTC management during the tenure of the former BRS government.

The decision to withdraw these special tickets comes in light of increased passenger traffic following the launch of the Mahalakshmi scheme. TSRTC Managing Director, VC Sajjanar, confirmed the discontinuation, stating, “Family-24 and T-6 tickets will be completely withdrawn beginning January 01, 2024.” Sajjanar explained that the issuance of these tickets required conductors to verify identity cards and note down passenger details, causing delays in service. With RTC buses operating at above capacity since the implementation of the Mahalakshmi scheme, streamlining the service by eliminating this verification process became imperative, he added.

Permission for Hindu Worship in Gyanvapi Mosque Basement Unacceptable; Mosque Management Committee Prepares for chalange in Allahabad High Court : AIMPLB

0

New Delhi: – The recent decision by a Varanasi District Judge to grant permission for Hindu worship in the basement of Gyanvapi Mosque has sparked concerns, drawing the attention of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board. The judge, on his last day of service, allowed a Hindu individual to conduct specific rituals, prompting the district magistrate to oversee the proceedings as directed by the court. This decision, deemed unacceptable by the Muslim community due to [specify grounds], is now poised for a legal challenge in the Allahabad High Court.

Dr. Syed Qasim Rasool Elias, spokesperson for the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, expressed profound dismay at the Varanasi District Judge’s ruling, labeling it as highly erroneous and lacking a solid foundation. He pointed out that the Gyanvapi Mosque’s basement was historically utilized for the worship of Lord Somnath Vyas until its closure in 1993, following the orders of the state government at that time. Despite the district administration taking possession on January 24, maintaining the status quo, the court surprisingly granted permission for worship in the basement.

The Muslim community finds this decision unacceptable and intends to challenge it in the Allahabad High Court. Dr. Elias lamented the regrettable decisions made by lower courts in piecing together the original case, seemingly favoring the Hindu community. He emphasized the need to clarify that worship never took place in the basement. The Mosque Management Committee is gearing up to challenge this decision in the Allahabad High Court.

Expressing further concern, Dr. Elias noted the unfortunate trend of lower courts making fragmented decisions, potentially strengthening the case for the Hindu community, reminiscent of the construction of a temple at the Babri Mosque site. He called upon the Supreme Court to instruct the government to rigorously enforce laws related to places of worship. Additionally, he urged lower courts not to accept any new petitions regarding mosques in light of existing laws, warning that the security of minority places of worship and overall peace in the country might be jeopardized.

Notably, the recent shakeup follows the suspension of Station House Officer B. Durga Rao, who allegedly falsely implicated the driver of former Bodhan MLA Mohommad Shakil. The SHO is currently reported missing.

The Panjagutta Police Station has faced previous controversies, including the arrest of employees from Meridian Restaurant for beating a customer to death in September 2023. Subsequently, Punjagutta Sub Inspector Shiva Shanker and Head Constable Ramesh were suspended for allegedly neglecting the customer’s health condition, resulting in his demise.

Stone Pelting on Rahul Gandhi’s Car: Congress Clarifies Amid Misreporting

0

Hours after Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury asserted that the windscreen of Rahul Gandhi’s car was shattered in a suspected stone-pelting incident near the Bihar-Bengal border, the party issued a clarification terming it ‘wrong news’.

In an official statement, the Congress explained, “A substantial crowd gathered to meet Rahul ji in Malda, West Bengal. Amidst the crowd, a woman suddenly approached Rahul ji’s car, leading to an abrupt application of brakes. The car’s glass broke due to the security circle’s rope. Rahul Gandhi, the people’s leader, continues to fight against injustice. The public supports him, ensuring his safety.”

Earlier, Chowdhury had claimed that unidentified individuals threw stones at Gandhi’s car, stating, “Maybe someone at the back pelted a stone amid the crowd…Police force is overlooking that. A lot can happen due to overlooking. This is a small incident but something could have happened too,” during an interview with news agency.
The reported attack occurred in Malda’s Harischandrapur area as the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra re-entered West Bengal from Bihar. Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra had reached Katihar on Tuesday, followed by a road show in Bihar district on Wednesday morning before heading to West Bengal through Malda.

Upon reaching a designated stop, Gandhi personally inspected the damaged car, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the incident. The conflicting narratives prompt a closer look at the circumstances surrounding the alleged stone-pelting event.

In an event at Lal Bahadur Stadium, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy distributed appointment letters to newly recruited nursing officers, reaffirming the government’s commitment to providing two lakh jobs within the upcoming year.

Hyderabad :- Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy reiterated the State government’s dedication to fulfilling promises of employment for the unemployed during an event at Lal Bahadur Stadium. Delivering appointment letters to recently hired nursing officers, he affirmed the government’s stance to create two lakh jobs within the next year.

According to Reddy, the issue of unemployment played a significant role in fueling the fight for a separate Telangana, particularly driven by jobless youth. He criticized the 10-year BRS regime for neglecting employment concerns, alleging a lack of serious consideration for justice for the unemployed. Reddy emphasized that his government was vigorously working to adhere to the stipulated timeline for fulfilling its assurances.

To address employment challenges, the State government has overhauled the Telangana State Public Service Commission, appointing a new chairman and members. The recruitment process is set to commence soon to meet the expectations of the unemployed. Reddy condemned criticisms from BRS leaders regarding the recruitment process, challenging them to recognize the satisfaction of candidates upon receiving appointment letters.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also took aim at former Health Minister T Harish Rao, who accused the Congress government of claiming credit for nursing officer recruitment initiated during the BRS government. Reddy alleged that BRS focused primarily on securing positions for “family members” and accused Harish Rao of unjustly criticizing the government’s efforts to provide jobs.

In a plea to BRS President K Chandrashekhar Rao, Reddy urged intervention to curb Harish Rao’s critical remarks. Reddy emphasized that unless the BRS acknowledged the government’s efforts, the ongoing process to fill job vacancies in the State would persist unabated.
