Hyderabad : – In a dramatic protest against the ‘Mahalakshmi’ free bus travel scheme for women in the state, Deva (45), an auto-rickshaw driver, took drastic measures in front of Praja Bhavan on Thursday evening.
The distressed driver arrived at Praja Bhavan, driving his auto-rickshaw, and set the vehicle ablaze, accompanied by an attempt to self-immolate. Quick intervention by traffic police and Praja Bhavan security thwarted his self-immolation bid, but unfortunately, the auto-rickshaw was completely engulfed in flames.
Prompt response from police and fire personnel managed to extinguish the fire, preventing further damage. Deva, a resident of Mahabubnagar, was subsequently apprehended by the police for his actions. The incident has stirred discussions about the impact of social welfare schemes on various sections of society.
