Warangal: A fisherman suffered severe injuries in a crocodile attack while fishing in Pakhal Lake, located in the Khanapuram mandal of Warangal district, on Monday.
Reports indicate that Shatla Chandramouli, from Budharaopet village, was fishing on a raft with other fishermen when a crocodile attacked, causing severe injuries to his leg and thigh. Hearing his cries for help, nearby fishermen rushed to his aid, prompting the crocodile to release him.
Chandramouli was quickly taken to the Narsampet Area Hospital via a ‘108’ ambulance. Due to the critical nature of his condition, he was transferred to Warangal MGM Hospital and subsequently to Hyderabad. Sources report that his condition has stabilized and he is responding well to treatment.
Despite fishing being banned in Pakhal Lake, which is part of the Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary, local fishermen frequently fish there illegally, especially at night. The forest staff have repeatedly caught and fined these fishermen, even destroying their boats, but the illegal activity continues using rafts and wooden logs, endangering their lives. There have been several crocodile attacks on fishermen in the past.
Pakhal Lake is home to over a hundred crocodiles. Forest officials have installed warning boards to alert people of the danger of crocodile attacks.
The NEET-UG Re-Examination for 2024, conducted on Sunday across seven test centres in Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Meghalaya, and Chandigarh (UT), saw nearly half of the eligible candidates as no-shows. Of the 1,563 candidates eligible to appear, only 813 (52%) attended, while 750 (48%) were absent.
Attendance Rates Vary by Region
The re-exam saw varied attendance rates across different states and centres. Gujarat recorded the highest attendance at 100%, while Chandigarh had the lowest at 0%. In Chandigarh (UT), none of the two eligible candidates appeared. In Chhattisgarh, of the 602 eligible candidates, 291 (48.34%) appeared. Gujarat’s Surat had one eligible candidate who attended, achieving a 100% attendance rate. In Jhajjar, Haryana, DAV Police Public School and Kendriya Vidyalaya saw 287 out of 494 (58.09%) eligible candidates attend. In Meghalaya, 234 out of 464 (50.43%) eligible candidates appeared for the exam.
Crackdown on Cheating
The Education Ministry has taken a firm stance against cheating, debarring 17 NEET-UG candidates from Bihar who appeared in the May 5 exam due to detected malpractice. According to the NTA, sixty-three candidates were debarred nationwide for malpractices during the NEET-UG, including 17 candidates from Bihar and 30 from Godhra.
Concerns Over Exam Management
A high-level source in the education ministry candidly confessed that the National Testing Agency did not “instil confidence” among the public. The source mentioned that the decision to award grace marks was unusual, as the rule book clearly states that in the event of an exam delay, extra time should be granted at the centre. The source also highlighted that the top 100,000 students from 4,750 centres showcased the nationwide desire to succeed.
The Role of Coaching Centres
In an informal briefing, education ministry sources said that education had been “unbundled,” with exam coaching centres now at the forefront, driven by parents’ commitment to their children’s success. They mentioned that an analysis of petitions filed in various courts, now being heard by the Supreme Court, would reveal the genuineness of grievances versus those with agendas.
Legal and Security Measures
The CBI has taken swift action by filing an FIR concerning alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG exam held on May 5, following a reference from the Union education ministry. This action comes amid nationwide protests and litigation by students over paper leak claims. The ministry’s complaint, now part of the FIR, cited “certain isolated incidents” in a few states during the exam. The CBI has formed special teams heading to Godhra and Patna, where cases of question paper leaks have been registered.
Assurances and Requests
Ministry officials have also assured that the NTA website and its other portals are fully secure, dismissing claims of hacking or compromise. The education ministry has urged students and their parents to trust the government, stating, “We have nothing to hide. We admit our moral responsibility to ensure a smooth process, but that did not happen. We request the opposition not to politicise the issue.”
Hyderabad, June 23, 2024 — In response to a recent surge in violent crimes, the Hyderabad police have reportedly instructed commercial establishments to close between 10:30 PM and 11 PM daily. This move follows a review of the state’s law and order situation by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy after a series of murders in the Old City sparked widespread concern.
Recent Violent Incidents:
On June 21, a 28-year-old driver named Mohd Zakir Ali was murdered in Achi Reddy Nagar.
On June 8, Mohd Layeeq from Rajendranagar was killed by a group of individuals at Attapur following a night out at a bar and restaurant.
Recently, a food court owner from Falaknuma was stabbed to death by armed assailants in Kalapather. Confusion Among Traders: The early closure directive has left many traders uncertain, as no official notification has been issued. Social media is rife with unverified reports suggesting the state government has mandated a 10:30 PM shutdown. “The police did not inform us about the early closure of shops. Anyhow, we close the establishment at 11 PM while hotels run till midnight,” said a garment shop owner.
A senior police official clarified that while no formal written instructions have been received, early closures are advisable given the current law and order situation to prevent unnecessary gatherings.
Closing the market early might have some impact on certain types of crimes, particularly those that occur during late hours or in the vicinity of markets. However, it’s not a comprehensive solution to controlling crime. Crime is a complex issue influenced by various socioeconomic factors, and addressing it requires multifaceted approaches including community policing, social programs, education, and economic development.
As for “Questions of shopkeepers,” it refers to the concerns, issues, or challenges faced by shopkeepers or business owners. These questions could relate to security, competition, regulations, customer behavior, or other aspects that affect their businesses.
Police Advisory: The police have also advised the public against offering rides to strangers and warned against loitering on city roads late at night. Consuming alcohol in public places is strictly prohibited, and citizens are urged to report any criminal activity immediately by calling Dial 100.
The public is encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement and adhere to these new measures to ensure safety and order in the city.
Hyderabad: On Sunday, heavy rains accompanied by strong thunderstorms swept through Hyderabad, leading to traffic congestion and waterlogging that disrupted evening commutes.
The city saw quick and scattered heavy rains across most areas, with particularly intense storms hitting the southern and central regions. Charminar, Malakpet, Mehdipatnam, Bahadurpura, Asifnagar, Nampally, LB Nagar, Saidabad, Amberpet, Dilsukhnagar, Rajendranagar, Golconda, Gachibowli, and Khairtabad were among the areas affected. According to the Telangana State Development and Planning Society (TGDPS) at 6 pm, Charminar recorded the highest rainfall at 70.3 mm, followed by Asifnagar at 69.3 mm, and Nampally at 68.5 mm.
Despite the heavy rains, the city experienced extreme humid heat with a maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity stood at 66 percent.
In Telangana, heavy rains also impacted several districts including Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Rangareddy, Karimnagar, Siddipet, Adilabad, Mancherial, and Nirmal, which received moderate rains. Kasipet in Mancherial recorded rainfall at 60.8 mm, followed by Lingapur in Kumaram Bheem Asifabad at 54.5 mm.
While Hyderabad received below-normal rainfall over the past week, it remains in the category of excess rainfall for the month of June, according to TGDPS. The India Meteorological Department forecasts scattered light to moderate rainfall until June 26, with temperatures expected to hover between 32 and 33 degrees Celsius.
Except for Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Peddapalli, and Mancherial, all other districts in Telangana fall into the normal, excess, or above excess rainfall categories. Weather experts predict more substantial and widespread rainfall in Telangana, including Hyderabad, after June 26.

New Delhi: Congress has launched a scathing attack on the Modi government over the NEET and UGC NET exams. The party claimed that paper leaks are continuously putting the future of millions of students at risk. Rahul Gandhi, in a press conference, said that while the Vyapam scam occurred in Madhya Pradesh, Narendra Modi is spreading it across the country.
Following the controversy surrounding the NEET paper leak involving arrested individuals from Bihar and the admission of NTA Chairman Dr. Pradeep Joshi, Gandhi stated, “There are claims that Modi can stop wars, but he cannot prevent paper leaks.”
Rahul Gandhi criticized the government’s failure to address the issue, highlighting that while there were claims of Modi stopping conflicts between Russia and Ukraine, and Israel and Gaza, he cannot or does not want to stop paper leaks in the country. “During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, thousands of students complained about paper leaks. Now, NEET and UGC-NET exams have also been leaked. Leaking papers is an anti-national activity as it severely harms the youth. Those responsible for these leaks should be apprehended and prosecuted,” he asserted.
The Congress leader attributed the ongoing issue of paper leaks to the BJP’s complete control over the system. He emphasized that as long as this control persists, the leaks will continue. “I speak of institutional capture. This is happening across various institutions in India, including educational ones,” Rahul Gandhi remarked.
Gandhi’s remarks come in the wake of the recent cancellation of the UGC-NET exam due to a leak, adding to the woes of students already affected by the NEET paper leak scandal.

On Thursday, two men disguised in a burkha and helmet attempted to rob Jagadamba Jewellery Shop in Medchal. The swift actions of the shop owner and his son thwarted the robbery, forcing the assailants to flee empty-handed.
The incident occurred around 1.45 pm when the masked robbers entered the shop. One was dressed in a burkha, while the other wore a helmet. They immediately began threatening the owner, Sesharam, and stabbed him in the shoulder while attempting to loot the jewellery and cash.
Sesharam recounted the harrowing experience, “They entered in a fierce manner causing panic. One person wore a burkha covering his entire body while the other covered his face with a mask and helmet. I was so panicky that I raised my hands. The one wearing the burkha started stabbing me while the other took money and gold and put them in a bag. My son came out shouting from inside, throwing chairs and loudly calling for help. The perpetrators fled the scene leaving the money and gold behind.”
The incident took place just 25 meters from the police station. However, the police faced challenges in retrieving preliminary crime evidence as the accused wore gloves, preventing fingerprints from being left behind. Additionally, CCTV cameras in the area had been removed due to ongoing flyover construction, hindering the capture of the suspects’ images. Nearly 25 CCTV cameras were removed from the Medchal Check and other junctions due to the construction work, according to a reliable source.
Medchal Additional DCP Narsimha Reddy commented on the case, “We have formed teams comprising people from the clues team, crimes, SOT, and law and order. We suspect the accused belong to the Bawaria gang as they have committed similar crimes in four places before fleeing the scenes. Their actions like speaking Hindi, their appearance, and their violent approach, confirm the gang’s involvement. The efforts of the father-son duo prevented the theft. Although the elder one sustained injuries, he is currently doing fine.”
The police are actively investigating the case and working to apprehend the suspects.
A Delhi Court on Thursday granted bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the money laundering case linked to the alleged liquor policy scam. Vacation Judge Nyay Bindu of Rouse Avenue Courts issued the order after reserving it earlier in the day.
Prosecution’s Arguments
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), represented by ASG SV Raju and special counsel Zoheb Hossain, presented several arguments against granting bail. They highlighted that co-accused Chanpreet Singh allegedly received large sums of money from entrepreneurs and paid for Kejriwal’s hotel stays. Hossain requested a stay on the bail order to allow the ED to pursue legal remedies, but the court rejected this request.
Raju further claimed that Kejriwal’s refusal to provide his phone password hindered the investigation, suggesting an adverse inference should be drawn. He also mentioned Vijay Nair, stating that although Nair had no official role in framing the excise policy, he acted as a middleman for Kejriwal, demonstrating a close connection.
Defense’s Rebuttal
Senior Advocate Vikram Chaudhari, representing Kejriwal, rebutted the ED’s arguments. He pointed out that Kejriwal was called as a witness, not an accused, in the CBI case. He criticized the ED’s timing of the arrest, questioning why Kejriwal was arrested on March 21, soon after the general elections were announced, and suggested political motivations behind the arrest.
Chaudhari also argued that the evidence against Kejriwal was insufficient and based on presumptions, such as chat records and statements from co-accused that did not directly implicate Kejriwal in any wrongdoing. He emphasized that the Chief Minister had not been named an accused in the scheduled offence to date and that the materials presented by the ED lacked credibility.
Court’s Decision and Background
The court dismissed a recent plea by Kejriwal for interim bail on medical grounds, citing his active election campaigning as evidence against his claimed health issues. The ED had filed a supplementary chargesheet naming Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party as accused, which the court reserved judgment on.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court dismissed Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest, supporting the ED’s evidence, including statements from approvers and AAP candidates alleging Kejriwal’s involvement in the Goa elections funding.
The ED has accused Kejriwal of being the “kingpin” in the Delhi excise scam, allegedly orchestrating a conspiracy to grant profitable business terms to certain private companies, with proceeds of crime amounting to over Rs. 100 crores. The agency asserted that the excise policy was manipulated to benefit specific wholesalers, coordinated by individuals like Vijay Nair on behalf of Kejriwal and other senior AAP leaders.
While AAP leaders Manish Sisodia remains in jail, Sanjay Singh has been granted bail by the Supreme Court following a concession by the ED.
In a significant development, the Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch has apprehended Banwarilal Laturlal Gujar, a 25-year-old resident of Rajasthan, for issuing threats against Bollywood superstar Salman Khan through a YouTube video. The video was posted on the channel ‘Are Chhodo Yaar’.
The arrest, facilitated by meticulous technical investigation, highlights the police’s dedication to protecting public figures from criminal intimidation. Gujar was transported to Mumbai and presented before a city court on Sunday, where he was remanded to police custody until June 18 for further investigation into the serious allegations.
The investigation began after a vigilant viewer reported a video on the ‘Are Chhodo Yaar’ channel. In the video, Gujar, speaking in Hindi, claimed affiliations with notorious gang members such as Goldy Brar, Vivek Bhaiya, Rohit, and Jitin. The police transcribed the video, noting several alarming statements directed at Salman Khan.
The video opened with, “Ram Ram mere sabhi Bhaiyo (Ram Ram all my brothers)… Brothers, we are all brothers now, Goldy is my brother, Nitin, Vivek, Rohit, and Jitin, they all are here and there are many more brothers.” This was followed by more explicit threats: “Our intention was clear, what we want and it was shared but he is not listening. His ego gets hurt. He has an attitude and he has an ego. He considers himself Dabangg King Khan.”
The threats escalated with, “We will not tell him what is Khan and who is a fanatic Hindutva. Okay, there is no issue, we all brothers are available here… Today we have laid a trap, and we know what and where we have to do what not to do, and what to do with whom… Whoever commits a mistake will pay the price. It does not affect us… We are searching for actor Salman Khan, and he is coming in the same line. Whether he has Y plus security or Z plus. But we have announced, meaning if we have said it, we will do it. Whoever will collide with us, we will finish them. Jai Hind Jai Bharat.”
On the professional front, Salman Khan is gearing up for his next release, Sikander, alongside Rashmika Mandanna. Directed by A.R. Murugadoss, the film promises drama, emotions, and an engaging storyline.
