An Indian Air Force MiG-29 fighter jet, en route from Adampur Air Base in Punjab to Agra, crashed near Agra, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday. The pilot managed to eject safely before the aircraft hit the ground and burst into flames, according to defence officials. Initial reports confirmed the pilot was unharmed.

Details of the Crash

The aircraft was on a scheduled exercise when it lost control, resulting in a crash in an open field near Agra. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a massive plume of smoke rising from the crash site, where onlookers gathered in response to the incident. Defence authorities are launching a court of inquiry to investigate the cause of the crash and will provide additional details as the investigation proceeds.

Past Incidents Involving MiG-29s

This incident adds to a series of accidents involving MiG-29 fighter jets in recent years. The MiG-29, a mainstay in the Indian Air Force’s fleet, has seen several similar mishaps due to various factors, including technical issues and operational hazards.

In 2020, a MiG-29 trainer aircraft crashed in Punjab, with both pilots ejecting safely. Another MiG-29 crashed into the Arabian Sea the same year, with only one of the two pilots surviving. In 2019, a MiG-29 experienced engine failure during a routine sortie over Jalandhar, resulting in the pilot’s safe ejection.

While these jets are highly capable in combat, they have a history of mechanical issues, which has prompted regular maintenance checks and upgrades. The IAF continues to modernize the MiG-29 fleet with improved avionics and other technological enhancements to improve safety and reliability.
