New Delhi: The first meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 is scheduled for August 22. Prior to this, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has launched a campaign against the bill. The organization is strongly opposed to the Waqf Amendment Bill and its members are meeting with opposition party leaders and JPC members. During these meetings, the Jamiat delegation is highlighting the harmful and erroneous amendments in the bill and explaining the negative impacts it could have on Muslims, including how it could lead to the loss of Waqf properties.

According to a statement from the Jamiat, this series of meetings is ongoing at both national and state levels. Recently, a Jamiat delegation from Maharashtra met with JPC members Mahatre Baliye Mama (NCP Sharad Pawar) and Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena UBT) in Mumbai. Additionally, a joint delegation from the Jamiat and the All India Muslim Personal Law Board is scheduled to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on August 20. Jamiat members are also meeting with political leaders and JPC members in Bihar and other states to discuss the bill’s flaws and harmful provisions.

The statement further noted that Jamiat members are engaging with NDA allied parties like Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), and Janata Dal (United) to draw attention to the dangerous clauses introduced in the new bill through amendments to the old one.

In the release, Jamiat stated that they are providing detailed information to JPC members about the amendments made to Waqf laws since independence. Jamiat President Maulana Arshad Madani criticized the government’s intentions, stating that the purpose of the amendment bill is not to protect Waqf properties but to deprive Muslims of this significant heritage. He accused the government of wanting to destroy both the purpose and status of Waqf properties.
