Osmania General Hospital Denies COVID-19 Fatality Amidst Reports

0

Hyderabad : In a stark contradiction to recent reports, Osmania General Hospital (OGH) Superintendent, Dr. B Nagender, emphatically refuted claims of a COVID-19-related death within the hospital premises. Addressing the media on Tuesday, Dr. Nagender clarified that the recently deceased patient, Shubhan, a 60-year-old male from Bandlaguda, Doodh Bowli, Hyderabad, did not succumb to COVID-19.

Shubhan was admitted to OGH’s acute medical care unit with a critical medical condition characterized by an acute onset of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) with severe left ventricular dysfunction (Heart Failure) and type 2 respiratory failure. According to Dr. Nagender, Shubhan’s demise on December 24, 2023, was attributed to severe heart failure, and not to COVID-19, despite his coincidentally positive COVID test result.

Dr. Nagender stated, “There is a report in the media that a patient died in Osmania General Hospital due to COVID, which is incorrect. Shubhan, a 60-year-old male patient from Bandlaguda, Hyderabad, was admitted to our emergency department with a medical emergency of Acute Onset COPD with Severe Left Ventricular Dysfunction (Heart Failure) and Type 2 respiratory failure.”

“Coincidentally, the patient’s COVID test was also positive. However, the patient died on December 24, 2023, due to severe heart failure, not COVID. Three patients with medical emergencies were admitted to our isolation ward and tested positive for COVID-19, all of whom are currently stable. The patients admitted with other medical emergencies and coincidentally found positive for COVID are put in isolation, and all necessary treatment is given,” he added.

The superintendent highlighted the commitment of the State administration, led by Telangana Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha, in addressing the rising COVID-19 cases. Regular reviews with hospitals are being conducted, and necessary recommendations are being provided to ensure the effective management of the situation.

This clarification from Osmania General Hospital underscores the importance of accurate information amid the ongoing battle against the pandemic and aims to alleviate concerns regarding the hospital’s handling of COVID-19 cases.

Top Indian Wrestler Phogat Takes Stand, Returns Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards in Protest

New Delhi : In a significant development, India’s top wrestler, Vinesh Phogat, has made the bold decision to return her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards as a protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). This move follows a wave of similar actions, including the recent returns of Padma Shri awards by Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia and Deaflympics champion Virender Singh Yadav.

Vinesh Phogat’s announcement came through an open letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing her dissatisfaction with the ongoing controversy surrounding the WFI. The decision comes in the wake of sexual harassment allegations against BJP MP Brij Bhushan, the former chief of WFI, by multiple women wrestlers, including prominent figures like Phogat, Sakshee Malikkh, and Bajrang Punia.

Phogat, a recipient of the Arjuna Award in 2016 and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2020, emphasized her stand against Bhushan and the subsequent appointment of his ally, Sanjay Singh. Singh, however, has been removed from his post by the Sports Ministry.

In her letter, Phogat directly addressed Prime Minister Modi, stating, “Prime Minister, I am Vinesh Phogat, a daughter of your house, and I am writing this letter to you to tell you about the condition I have been in for the past year.” She recounted the positive impact of government recognition, citing the example of Sakshi Malik being named the brand ambassador of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ after winning an Olympic medal in 2016.

Phogat urged the Prime Minister to pay attention to Bhushan’s admission on live television that he had made women wrestlers uncomfortable. This, she asserted, underscores the need for accountability and justice in the sporting community.

Brij Bhushan, responding to the suspension of his aide Sanjay Singh, declared his retirement from wrestling-related matters and politics. Bhushan emphasized that the wrestling issue should be resolved between the government and the elected federation, distancing himself from any further involvement.

This latest act by Vinesh Phogat adds to the growing wave of symbolic protests within the Indian sporting fraternity, demanding transparency, accountability, and a safe environment for athletes. The situation continues to unfold, raising questions about the governance and ethics within the realm of Indian sports.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by state BJP President K Surendran, signifying a strategic move in reinforcing the party’s leadership.

Major Ravi, aged 65, brings a wealth of experience from his commendable service in the Indian Army, notably heading the mission ‘Operation One Eyed Jack,’ aimed at capturing suspects in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. His contributions extend beyond the military, as he has made a mark in the Malayalam film industry, creating compelling films inspired by his experiences in the army post-retirement.

A recipient of the President’s Gallantry Award in 1991 and 1992 for combating terrorism in Punjab and Kashmir during his tenure with the National Security Guard (NSG), Major Ravi recently joined the BJP in Delhi. His appointment as Vice President underscores the party’s recognition of his leadership and commitment.

The BJP’s leadership expansion also includes the induction of C Reghunath, a Congress leader who contested unsuccessfully against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Dharmadom, Kannur, during the 2021 elections. Reghunath, now a BJP member, has been granted a seat in the party’s national council, further enhancing the party’s influence and representation.

Major Ravi’s dual expertise in military service and filmmaking, coupled with his distinguished awards, positions him as a prominent figure in the BJP’s leadership landscape in Kerala. The party aims to leverage his multifaceted background to bolster its presence and resonate with a diverse audience in the state.

Landmark Telecom Bill Receives Presidential Nod, Paving the Way for Sector Overhaul

0

“New Law for New India.”

New Delhi : The much-anticipated Telecommunications Bill, recently greenlit by Parliament, has secured the crucial assent from the President. Dubbed ‘The Telecommunications Act, 2023,’ this legislation is poised to revolutionize the country’s century-old telecom law, emphasizing investor-friendly measures while placing a high premium on user protection. Simultaneously, it grants the government expanded powers to intercept communications.

The scope of the Act excludes broadcasting and over-the-top services like WhatsApp and Telegram. It enshrines rules for spectrum allocation, introducing a non-auction route for assigning airwaves dedicated to satellite-based communication services. Cleared by the Lok Sabha on December 20 and the Rajya Sabha on December 21, the legislation supersedes the outdated regulatory framework based on the Indian Telegraph Act of 1885, the Wireless Telegraphy Act (1933), and the Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Possession) Act (1950).

According to a gazette notification, “The following Act of Parliament received the assent of the President on the 24th December, 2023 and is hereby published for general information.”

The structural reforms outlined in The Telecommunications Act, 2023 aim to simplify the complex licensing system prevalent in the telecom sector, introducing a streamlined authorization mechanism. It replaces over 100 types of licenses with a focus on three key aspects: providing telecommunication services, operating and expanding telecommunication networks, and possessing radio equipment.

The Act, scheduled to come into force on a date specified by the Central Government, introduces stringent measures to curb pesky callers, including measures to prevent SIM misuse. The bill proposes imprisonment for up to three years and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh for impersonation and fraudulent acquisition of SIM using someone else’s identity proof.

Notably, it mandates verifiable biometrics data capture by telecom operators when issuing new connections. The Act also incorporates a digital-centric online grievance redressal mechanism for user complaints and gives legislative backing to an online dispute resolution mechanism for resolving consumer-telecom disputes.

Addressing issues of telecom service continuity, the Act introduces administrative (non-auction) allocation of spectrum for satellite broadband services. It outlines provisions for taking back unutilized spectrum before the permit’s expiry, with no provision for a refund of the spectrum price.

The Act also introduces a state government-led dispute resolution structure, involving the district magistrate and district judge in right-of-way issues related to telecom network rollouts. Damaging telecommunication networks can incur hefty fines and compensation up to Rs 50 lakh.

Moreover, the Act brings telecom equipment procurement under its purview, aligning it with the National Security Directive on the Telecommunication Sector. It significantly reduces the penalty cap on telecom operators to Rs 5 crore, easing legal dispute processes by allowing voluntary disclosure of lapses with the option to correct mistakes by paying applicable penalties.
