Srinagar: In two separate encounters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, six militants and two soldiers lost their lives.
The confrontations began yesterday afternoon in Modergam village, where security forces initiated a search operation based on intelligence reports of militant presence. In the initial exchange of gunfire, para commando Lance Naik Pradeep Nain was injured and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. The search operation continues with additional troops tightening the siege.
Simultaneously, another encounter in Frisal Chinnigam resulted in the deaths of four militants, whose bodies were sighted near the encounter site. Havaldar Raj Kumar of 1 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) was also killed in this engagement. Security forces are using drones to monitor both sites and track militant movements.
Director General of Police (DGP) R.R. Swain confirmed the deaths, stating, “The killing of six militants in twin encounters is a significant milestone for security forces.” IGP Kashmir V.K. Birdi noted that the exact number of terrorists killed or trapped would be confirmed once the encounters conclude. The identities and affiliations of the militants, suspected to belong to Hizbul Mujahideen, will be clarified post-operations.
These incidents occur amid heightened security for the ongoing 52-day Amarnath Yatra to the cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas.
Rajouri Attack
In Rajouri district, an army jawan was injured in an early morning militant attack on a Territorial Army post in Galuthi village, Manjakote area. Militants fired upon the post, leading to a half-hour exchange of gunfire. The injured soldier was evacuated to a military hospital.
Security forces have launched a search operation to track down the militants responsible for the attack.
