Chittoor/AP October 2, 2024 – A tense situation unfolded during the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations in Chittoor when Mayor S. Amudha arrived to pay tribute by decorating the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The incident occurred when the Mayor’s driver was asked by the local Traffic Circle Inspector (CI) to park the vehicle elsewhere as it was obstructing the road.

The disagreement between Mayor Amudha and the Traffic CI escalated after the latter insisted on moving the car to a side parking space next to the Mayor’s vehicle. Witnesses reported that the argument continued for several minutes, causing a minor disruption during the event.

In a significant turn of events, a Traffic Sub-Inspector of Police taught a lesson in traffic rules to the Mayor, who is considered the first citizen of the city. Such incidents highlight a common occurrence where political leaders often bend small laws in an effort to maintain their influence. However, this particular Sub-Inspector made it clear that the law is equal for everyone, regardless of status or position.

The Mayor expressed her displeasure with the CI’s approach, stating that the vehicle arrangement should have been pre-coordinated, especially during an important event like Gandhi Jayanti. However, the CI maintained that road safety and traffic flow needed to be prioritized.

Despite the dispute, the event resumed shortly after, with Mayor S. Amudha completing the ceremony as planned. Local authorities have yet to comment on the issue, but it has drawn significant attention among residents, with some expressing support for the Mayor while others believe the CI was merely enforcing necessary traffic regulations.

The video of the exchange has surfaced online, adding to the discussion surrounding the incident.
