Hyderabad on High Alert: CM Orders Round-the-Clock Monitoring Amidst Heavy Rains

Hyderabad – In response to the heavy rains that have been relentlessly pounding Telangana and neighboring Andhra Pradesh, the state government has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Monday, September 2, 2024. This precautionary measure, which affects both government and private schools, colleges, and universities, comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Hyderabad and several other districts in Telangana. The forecast predicts moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, with surface winds expected to reach speeds of 30-40 km/h, further raising concerns about flooding and other weather-related disruptions.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has ordered all state officials to remain on high alert due to the unpredictable and severe nature of the current weather conditions. In an emergency teleconference, the Chief Minister, along with Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and several key ministers including Uttam Kumar Reddy, Damodara Rajanarsimha, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, Tummala Nageswara Rao, and Jupalli Krishnarao, urgently reviewed the situation with high-level officials.

During the teleconference, Chief Minister Reddy directed that the Chief Secretary, DGP, and officials from Municipal, Electricity, Panchayati Raj, Hydra, and Irrigation departments remain vigilant around the clock. He emphasized the importance of field-level monitoring, instructing Collectors, SPs, Revenue, Irrigation, and Municipal officials in all districts to conduct 24-hour tours to assess and manage the situation on the ground. The Chief Minister also mandated that no officials take leave during this period, and those already on leave must immediately return to duty to participate in relief efforts.

Chief Minister Reddy stressed the necessity for emergency department officials to stay at the field level, ready to relay information to the Chief Minister’s office at any time. He also insisted on immediate implementation of relief measures in flood-affected areas. The Chief Minister appealed to the public to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, particularly in flood-prone regions, and urged residents to promptly report any emergencies to authorities.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister instructed that all Ministers, MPs, MLAs, and MLCs remain in their local constituencies and actively participate in relief operations. He urged these officials to stay alert 24/7, assisting in aid programs and ensuring the safety of the public.

The state government, led by Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari, has taken additional steps to ensure public safety, including the establishment of control rooms in every district collector’s office, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and the state secretariat. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are on standby in Hyderabad and Vijayawada, ready to be deployed if necessary. Rising water levels in streams across districts like Mahabubabad, Narayanpet, and Khammam have prompted the appointment of special officers to manage these areas closely.

The government has also issued directives to prevent contamination of water tanks and ensure proper chlorination to prevent waterborne diseases during this critical period. Parents, guardians, and all citizens are urged to stay informed of weather updates and take necessary precautions to safeguard their families.

The state remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents as it navigates this challenging weather situation.
