Hyderabad: With a steady rise in power demand across Greater Hyderabad and nearby districts, Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) projects an increase of around 20-25% in electricity demand during the upcoming summer. This expected surge has raised concerns among residents about potential power shortages, especially given recent instances of unannounced outages.

TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Ali Faruqui noted that last year’s peak demand of 3,756 MW has already climbed to 4,352 MW, a 16% increase, while total consumption rose by 12%, from 81.39 million units to 90.68 million units. “Looking at the current demand trends, we anticipate that electricity requirements may hit an all-time high with an additional 20-25% increase next summer,” Faruqui said.

However, recent disruptions in power supply have led to growing public concerns, particularly with the newly elected Congress government. Citizens are questioning if the Congress administration will be able to meet the high power demand and maintain steady supply during the peak summer season.

Previously, under the decade-long administration of the BRS government, residents rarely experienced power cuts, even during high-demand periods. Since Congress took office, however, complaints about unexpected power outages have increased, leading to speculation about the government’s ability to manage supply effectively in the coming months.

During a review meeting held Thursday with TRANSCO Director Jagath Reddy and other senior engineers, Faruqui emphasized the urgency of strengthening the distribution and transmission systems to meet the expected demand. He instructed officials to expedite maintenance and repair work to ensure that the infrastructure is fully prepared by summer.

Further, Faruqui highlighted the importance of rigorous coordination between Transco and DISCOM engineers, particularly when issuing Line Clearances (LC) for essential maintenance, as delays could contribute to further outages. He urged the government to prioritize this issue to avoid any unnecessary hardship for the public.

As summer approaches, the Congress administration will face heightened public scrutiny over its handling of electricity supply, and residents are hopeful that they won’t have to endure unexpected outages in the heat.
