Chhattisgarh: In a tragic incident on Monday, an IED blast orchestrated by Naxals in Bijapur claimed the lives of nine people, including eight jawans from the Dantewada District Reserve Guard (DRG) and their driver. The blast targeted their vehicle as they were returning from a joint operation conducted across Dantewada, Narayanpur, and Bijapur districts.
Official Statements
IG Bastar confirmed the deaths, stating, “Nine people – eight DRG jawans and one driver – lost their lives in the IED blast by Naxals in Bijapur.”
Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao condemned the attack, calling it a “cowardly action.” He added, “The jawans are working tirelessly to eliminate Naxals. This sacrifice will not go in vain.”
Former Chief Minister and Assembly Speaker Raman Singh echoed similar sentiments: “Naxalites resort to cowardly attacks whenever significant operations are launched against them. I express condolences to the families of the martyrs.”
Background and Context
This attack follows a recent encounter in Bastar, where five Naxalites were neutralized by security forces. The operation, conducted on December 5, also claimed the life of a DRG head constable.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his visit to Chhattisgarh last month, highlighted intensified efforts against Naxalism. He reported that over the past year, security forces had neutralized 287 Naxals, arrested 1,000, and facilitated 837 surrenders.
Government Initiatives
Both the central and state governments have prioritized counterinsurgency measures. The Chhattisgarh government has rolled out rehabilitation policies for surrendering Naxalites, aiming to reintegrate them into society. Programs like the Community Policing Programme for Naxal-Affected Areas have been launched to foster trust between law enforcement and local communities, enhancing cooperation in anti-Naxal efforts.
The attack comes amidst the central government’s commitment to eradicate Naxalism by March 2026.
