Amidst the news of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari’s demise, allegations of foul play have emerged, with his brother and Ghazipur MP, Afzal Ansari, accusing authorities of poisoning Mukhtar while he was in jail.

Afzal Ansari’s claims add a layer of suspicion to the circumstances surrounding Mukhtar Ansari’s death, raising questions about the conditions of his imprisonment and the level of care provided to him while in custody. The allegations have sparked intense scrutiny and demands for a thorough investigation into the events leading up to Ansari’s passing.
The five-time MLA from eastern UP’s Mau, known for his involvement in the property business, had a notorious history with 52 criminal cases registered against him in UP and elsewhere. He contested elections twice as a Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) candidate, with his last electoral bid in 2017.

Following Ansari’s demise, authorities swiftly imposed prohibitory orders under CrPC Section 144 across Uttar Pradesh. Enhanced security measures were implemented in districts such as Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi. Section 144 prohibits large gatherings in public places, and additional police personnel were deployed to maintain order.

Ansari, who was on Uttar Pradesh Police’s list of 66 gangsters, had been incarcerated in UP and Punjab since 2005, with over 60 criminal cases pending against him.

The Samajwadi Party expressed condolences over Ansari’s death, offering tribute to the departed leader. “Sad demise of former MLA Shri Mukhtar Ansari. May his soul rest in peace. May the bereaved family members get the strength to bear this immense loss. Humble tribute,” the party conveyed in a Hindi post on X.

A letter penned by Mukhtar Ansari to the Chief Judicial Magistrate in the Mau court on March 21, 2024, has surfaced, alleging that he was being poisoned by the jail authorities. Just a week after writing this letter, Ansari tragically passed away.

In his correspondence, Ansari raised serious concerns about his well-being while in custody, suggesting that he was a victim of foul play orchestrated by the authorities. The emergence of this letter adds weight to the allegations made by his brother, Afzal Ansari, who had earlier accused the authorities of poisoning Mukhtar.
