New Delhi: Meta has unveiled plans to integrate third-party messaging services with its platforms, WhatsApp and Messenger, for users across the European Union. This major shift, mandated by the new Digital Markets Act (DMA), will enable users to manage messages from both Meta and third-party services within the same inbox or keep them separate.

Key Changes and Features

As part of its compliance with the DMA, Meta will allow users in Europe to connect with individuals on third-party messaging platforms that have opted for interoperability. This integration is set to begin with new features that include:

  • Unified Messaging Experience: Users will have the option to consolidate messages from third-party apps into a single inbox or keep them in a separate folder. This flexibility aims to enhance user control over message management.
  • New Notifications: Meta will introduce notifications within WhatsApp and Messenger to alert users when new third-party messaging apps become available. This will help users stay informed and manage their messaging preferences effectively.
  • Onboarding and Customization: A streamlined onboarding process will be introduced to educate users about third-party chats. Users will be able to select which third-party apps they wish to receive messages from and adjust their inbox settings accordingly.

Future Developments

Meta plans to expand its features in phases, aligning with the DMA requirements:

  • 2025: The integration will extend to include group chat capabilities, allowing users to create and participate in groups across different messaging platforms.
  • 2027: Voice and video calling functionalities will be introduced, further enhancing the interoperability between WhatsApp, Messenger, and third-party services.

User Experience Enhancements

Meta emphasizes that despite the integration, users will continue to enjoy rich messaging features such as:

  • Reactions: Expressing emotions through message reactions.
  • Direct Replies: Responding to specific messages within a chat.
  • Typing Indicators: Seeing when contacts are typing.
  • Read Receipts: Notifying users when their messages have been read.

“This integration reflects our commitment to providing a seamless and enriched messaging experience for our users while adhering to regulatory requirements,” Meta said in a statement.

As Meta moves forward with these updates, users in the EU can look forward to a more connected and versatile messaging environment, enhancing their communication experience across multiple platforms. Further updates and detailed information on the rollout will be shared as the changes approach implementation.
