Hyderabad: In a significant reshuffle in the police department, C.V. Anand has been reinstated as the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, replacing Kothakota Sreenivasa Reddy on Saturday, September 7. Anand’s return to the role is seen as a strategic move to strengthen law enforcement in Hyderabad.

Anand, a distinguished Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1991 batch, has built a strong reputation over the years for implementing innovative reforms in urban policing and crime prevention. His previous tenures were marked by modernization efforts and his approach to technology-driven policing.

Achievements and Previous Service

C.V. Anand served as the Commissioner of Cyberabad Police from 2013 to 2016. During this period, he led a series of initiatives to enhance urban policing through the use of technology. Notable achievements include the widespread installation of CCTV cameras across the city and the introduction of centralized traffic management systems, which helped reduce congestion and improve safety on roads.

When he first took charge as the Commissioner of Hyderabad Police in December 2021, Anand focused heavily on maintaining public safety and law and order. His tenure was noted for effectively managing communal harmony during sensitive occasions. He also prioritized traffic management and led Operation ROPE (Removal of Obstructive Parking and Encroachments), an initiative to streamline traffic flow in the city.

Under his leadership, Hyderabad also saw a significant crackdown on narcotics and cybercrime. Anand spearheaded the creation of a dedicated Narcotics Control Bureau in the state, an essential step in fighting the growing drug menace. He also strengthened the Cyber Crime Unit to tackle the increasing challenges posed by digital crime.

Changes in the Police Leadership

In addition to Anand’s return as commissioner, the government has made several other key changes in the police hierarchy.

  • Kothakota Sreenivasa Reddy, the outgoing police commissioner, has been appointed as the Director General of Vigilance and Enforcement, as well as the Ex Officio Principal Secretary to the government.
  • Vijay Kumar has been transferred and posted as the Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, replacing Anand. He was earlier acting as the Director General of Police (Law and Order).
  • Mahesh M. Bhagwat, currently the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), has been given additional charge as the Additional Director General of Police (Personnel and Welfare).
  • M. Ramesh, Inspector General of Police, will serve in the additional role of Inspector General of Police (Sports) until further notice.

These transfers are seen as part of a broader strategy to reinforce the leadership within Telangana’s police force, ensuring that the state’s law enforcement agencies remain robust and well-prepared for future challenges.

With C.V. Anand’s return as Hyderabad Police Commissioner, residents and officials alike are hopeful for a continuation of his progressive reforms, particularly in areas of narcotics control, cybercrime, and urban traffic management. Further updates on his future plans for the city are awaited.
