In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Ashoknagar, Hyderabad witnessed protests on Friday night following the tragic suicide of a 23-year-old woman, Marri Pravalika, hailing from Warangal. She was a resident of a local hostel and was reportedly preparing for the highly competitive Group-II exams.

The suicide of Marri Pravalika, allegedly prompted by the postponement of the Group-II exams, prompted groups of students and young people to take to the streets of Ashoknagar. They claimed that Pravalika had been deeply distressed by the delay in the exams, which led her to take her own life.

In a heart-wrenching suicide note purportedly penned by Pravalika, she pleads for her mother’s forgiveness, expressing her helplessness in the face of her anguish.

This tragic incident unfolded within the jurisdiction of Gandhinagar police, and the authorities swiftly responded as protests erupted in Ashoknagar around midnight. Aspirants of the Group-II exams and concerned students gathered in significant numbers, demanding justice and answers.

The Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) had recently rescheduled the Group-II exams due to the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for November. The postponed exams were rescheduled for January 6 and 7, 2024, as they initially clashed with the election notification dates. The administrative personnel are expected to be occupied with election-related duties during that period.

A staggering 5.5 lakh students are registered to appear for the Group-II exams, a crucial examination conducted by the TSPSC to fill 783 Group-II vacancies. The rescheduling was imperative to ensure a smooth and fair examination process, given the extraordinary circumstances.

This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the pressure and challenges faced by young aspirants preparing for competitive exams and raises questions about the support systems in place to address their mental health and well-being. The entire community mourns the loss of Marri Pravalika and calls for measures to prevent such distressing incidents in the future.

“In the wake of tragedy, may we find the strength to support one another, recognize the immense pressure our youth face, and work together to create a society where no dream is so heavy that it leads to despair.”
