Hyderabad: In response to the ongoing challenges posed by heavy rains and flooding, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner Amrapali Kata has issued directives for urgent interventions across the city. During a teleconference on Tuesday, September 3, Commissioner Kata emphasized the need for immediate action to address flooding and canal maintenance issues throughout Hyderabad.

Canal Maintenance and Flood Prevention

Commissioner Kata directed officials to clear floating debris from canals and stormwater drain culverts during dry periods to ensure proper drainage and prevent water stagnation. These measures are crucial for managing water accumulation and preventing flooding in inland areas, particularly during heavy rains.

Health and Safety Measures

The GHMC’s additional commissioner of health has been instructed to identify flood-affected colonies for anti-larvae operations and fogging, aimed at preventing the spread of seasonal diseases. In collaboration with district medical officers, health camps will be established in the Rangareddy, Hyderabad, and Medchal districts to provide medical support to affected residents.

Road Repairs and Hazard Prevention

In addition to health initiatives, Commissioner Kata has ordered the immediate repair of roads damaged by the rains. To ensure public safety, warning boards and barricades will be installed around particularly hazardous areas to prevent accidents.

Surprise Inspection and Continued Monitoring

Following these directives, Commissioner Kata conducted a surprise inspection in the Kukatpally zone, visiting flood-affected areas such as Maisamma Pond, IDL Pond, and Safdar Nagar. She underscored the importance of completing canal works promptly to avoid further disruptions from flooding. The commissioner also advised on ensuring the provision of safe drinking water to residents in the affected areas.

These actions by the GHMC aim to mitigate the impact of the ongoing rains and ensure the safety and well-being of Hyderabad’s residents.
