Hyderabad :- In a significant development, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials arrested BRS MLC and former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter, Kalvakuntla Kavitha, on Friday evening in connection with the Delhi liquor scam. The arrest follows prolonged searches at her Hyderabad residence, culminating in her custody by ED authorities.
Tension mounted at Kavitha’s residence as a sizable contingent of BRS activists gathered, attempting to impede the ED officials’ arrest procedures. Despite the resistance, the ED officials finalized arrangements to transfer Kavitha to Delhi, booking a flight ticket for her tonight.
Notably, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had earlier issued a notice to Kavitha for interrogation, which she evaded. Moreover, she had previously ignored summons from the ED. Though not explicitly named as an accused in the liquor scam charge-sheet, Kavitha faced intensive questioning under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act by both ED and CBI.
Interestingly, Kavitha’s arrest coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled roadshow in the Malkajgiri Lok Sabha segment in Hyderabad.
Reacting to the arrest, BRS leader Sravan accused the ED and IT (Income Tax) of acting on behalf of the BJP, alleging a selective approach in targeting BRS leaders while ignoring similar cases involving Congress leaders in Telangana.
The ED has alleged that Vijay Nair, one of the accused in the case, received substantial kickbacks from the “South Group,” purportedly controlled by Sarath Reddy, Kavitha, and Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, on behalf of AAP leaders.
Former Ministers KT Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao arrived at Kavitha’s residence to confront ED officials, questioning the legality of the arrest warrant without a transit warrant.
The arrest of Kavitha marks a significant development in the ongoing probe into the Delhi liquor scam, stirring political ripples and intensifying the scrutiny on BRS leadership amidst the electoral landscape.
