0

Twenty-one people were killed and 47 injured after a bus carrying pilgrims skidded off the road and rolled down into a gorge in Jammu district on Thursday, officials said.

The accident took place at the Tungi-Morh in the Chowki Chora belt of the district, the officials said, adding that the bus rolled around 150 feet down into the gorge.

A police spokesperson said at about 12:35 pm, the bus bearing registration number UP81CT-4058 fell into the gorge, killing 21 passengers and injuring 47.

The bus was carrying devotees from Haryana’s Kurukshetra and was headed towards Shiv Khori in the Pouni area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district. It had started its journey from Uttar Pradesh.

The bodies have been shifted to the Akhnoor sub-district hospital, the police spokesperson said, adding that of the injured, seven have been admitted in the Akhnoor hospital and 40 in the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital in Jammu.

The injured were initially shifted to the Akhnoor hospital for treatment. Subsequently, 36 of them, including six in a critical condition, were shifted to the GMC hospital in Jammu in ambulances, the officials said.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Faisal Qureshi, the transport commissioner, along with other officials, visited the spot and supervised the operation.

The LG has expressed his anguish at the loss of lives in the tragic accident.

In a condolence message, Sinha said, “The bus accident in Akhnoor is heart-rending. I condole the loss of lives and pray to the almighty to give the bereaved families the strength to bear the irreparable loss. Praying for a speedy recovery of the injured. The administration is providing all possible assistance to the bereaved families and is also extending medical facilities to those who have been injured.”

The injured passengers said the accident took place when the driver was negotiating a blind curve and a speeding car was coming from the opposite direction.

“A car was coming from the opposite direction. The driver tried to negotiate a blind curve but failed, resulting in the vehicle rolling down into the gorge,” Amar Chand, one of the injured people undergoing treatment at the Akhnoor hospital, said.

Those who sustained injuries in the incident said they had come for a pilgrimage to Shiv Khori.

The SSP said it seems there was no overloading of passengers in the bus.

The SSP and the deputy commissioner of Jammu visited the GMC hospital to inquire about the injured.

“No One PM in Past Uttered Such Hate Speech: Manmohan Singh Condemns Modi, Calls to Defend Democracy”

0

New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a letter to Punjab’s voters ahead of the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha polls on June 1, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using “hateful, unparliamentary terms to target either a specific section of society or the opposition.”

Singh appealed to voters, stating they have “one final chance to ensure that democracy and our Constitution are protected from the repeated assaults of a despotic regime, trying to unleash dictatorship in India.”

“I have been keenly following the political discourse during this election campaign. Modi ji has indulged in the most vicious form of hate speeches, which are purely divisive in nature. Modi ji is the first prime minister to lower the dignity of public discourse, and thereby the gravity of the office of the prime minister,” Singh said.

“No prime minister in the past has uttered such hateful, unparliamentary and coarse terms, meant to target either a specific section of the society or the opposition. He has also attributed some false statements to me. I have never in my life singled out one community from the other. That is the sole copyright of the BJP,” the senior Congress leader emphasized.

PM Modi had accused Singh of saying that Muslims have the “first right on the country’s resources.”

Singh also criticized the BJP for imposing the Agniveer Scheme on the armed forces, labeling it as ill-conceived. He accused the BJP of undermining patriotism, bravery, and service by limiting their value to just four years, highlighting what he called “fake nationalism.”

“Those who trained for regular recruitment were woefully betrayed by the outgoing regime. The youth of Punjab, the son of the farmer, who dreams of serving the motherland through the Armed Forces, is now thinking twice about getting recruited only for a 4-year stint. Agniveer Scheme endangers National Security. The Congress party has therefore promised to abolish the Agniveer Scheme,” he added.

Hyderabad: The opposition BRS in Telangana on Thursday announced it would hold protests against the Congress government’s alleged move to remove Charminar and the ‘Kakatiya arch’ from the state emblem. BRS working president K T Rama Rao, who visited Charminar along with other party leaders, stated that Charminar is the identity of Hyderabad.

Speaking to reporters, Rama Rao accused the Congress government of not wanting former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to receive credit for the BRS government’s performance over the last 10 years. He also claimed that the Congress is attempting to undermine the progress achieved during BRS’s tenure.

“We oppose the Congress government’s attempt to remove Charminar and the Kakatiya arch from the official logo of Telangana,” he said, adding that the BRS would also organize protests on this issue. Rama Rao demanded that the Congress government withdraw its alleged attempt to remove these historical symbols from the state emblem.

The proposed agitation by the BRS came in response to the state government’s move to introduce a new state emblem reflecting the “struggles and sacrifices of Telangana,” along with a new state song. Rama Rao condemned the government’s decision to remove Charminar and Kakatiya Kala Thoranam from the state emblem. “If the government does not withdraw the decision, a protest will be launched in Telangana,” he added.

On state formation day, June 2, the Congress government plans to unveil the new emblem, arguing that the current emblem featuring Kakatiya Kala Thoranam and Charminar reflects feudalism and autocratic rule. CM Reddy wants the new emblem to symbolize the decades-long struggle for Telangana state. CM Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka have finalized the new emblem, designed by artist Rudra Rajesham. The government has also enlisted Oscar-winning music composer MM Keeravani to compose music for the state song, which will also be released on June 2. The state anthem adopted is Ande Sri’s ‘Jaya Jaya He Telangana.’

CM Reddy is scheduled to hold a meeting with leaders of all political parties to brief them on the new logo and state song.

Earlier, on X, Rama Rao posted, “Worldwide, Charminar has been the icon/symbol of Hyderabad for centuries. When one thinks of Hyderabad, they cannot but think of Charminar, which has all the qualities of a UNESCO world heritage site. Now the Congress Government wants to remove the iconic Charminar from the state logo citing frivolous reasons.”

He also stated that the protest at Kakatiya Kala Thoranam was just the beginning and that BRS would proceed legally. He questioned the Telangana government’s decision, saying people have not given Congress the power to change the state emblem. “Kakatiya Kala Thoranam and Charminar are not signs of imperialism. They are symbols of development, people’s welfare, and the historical and archaeological significance of the region,” he said. He also argued that a change of state emblem would require the approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Charminar, constructed in 1591, is the symbol of Hyderabad. Situated on the east bank of the Musi River, it is listed as an archaeological and architectural treasure on the official list of monuments prepared by the Archaeological Survey of India. Kakatiya Kala Thoranam, on the other hand, is a historical arch located in the Warangal district. It was built around the 12th century during the rule of the Kakatiya dynasty. These monuments were incorporated into the emblem of Telangana. However, the current government is planning to launch a new emblem, which has triggered the controversy.

No Heatwave Deaths Reported in Telangana Amid Intense Summer

0

Hyderabad: It may sound strange but is true! Despite experiencing what could be the toughest spell of heat wave conditions that people of Telangana had to face in recent times, the health department has not reported any heatwave-related fatality this year.

Have the heatwave deaths miraculously ceased to exist or are the cases simply getting under-reported due to difficulties in the reporting system?

Barring sporadic spells of thundershowers, for a large part of the past three months, temperatures in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and other districts have consistently hovered between 40 degrees Celsius and 46 degrees Celsius. However, despite months of severe summer, not a single individual has died due to the heat wave in Telangana, according to state public health data.

A large section of patients who might have suffered symptoms due to heat wave during summer usually prefer private healthcare institutions like a nursing home, clinic, or private hospital. At present, there is no mechanism for sharing data of heat wave cases between private healthcare institutions and the public health department. This perennial problem of no data sharing could be a major factor for under-reporting.

There are two other major factors that dictate reporting of heat wave cases. The first is the possibility of issuing compensation to relatives of heat wave victims and the second one being the inherently complex procedure of confirming a heat wave death, especially among individuals with co-morbidities, according to senior public health officials and seasonal disease experts.

“Elderly persons with a history of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and kidney failure quite often become victims of the heat wave, even while remaining indoors. Similarly, infants and sick individuals also struggle to control their high temperatures internally. Such deaths are not categorized as heat strokes and they do not get reported or counted as heat deaths,” senior government doctors here said.

Seasonal disease experts in Hyderabad pointed out that it is extremely difficult in a government sector to define the death of an individual due to the heat wave.

“I believe that in urban centres, there was a lot of awareness on heat wave and people completely avoided venturing out. However, this was not the case in districts, where such cases went unreported,” a senior public health official in Hyderabad said.

Heat-related death: It is defined as a death in which exposure to high ambient temperature either caused the death or significantly contributed to it.

  • When body temperature at the time of collapse was more than 105 degrees F or more than 40.6 degrees C, then the cause of death should be heat stroke or hyperthermia.
  • A significant number of these deaths occur in persons having some preexisting disease.
  • Such deaths can be certified as heat-related, with the disease being considered a significant contributing condition, or vice versa.

Sharjeel Imam Granted Bail by HC in Sedition Case

0

New Delhi: In a significant development, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted bail to student activist Sharjeel Imam in connection with a 2020 communal riots case involving allegations of sedition and unlawful activities.

Imam, who had been in custody since January 28, 2020, was granted bail after the court considered his appeal against a trial court order that had denied him bail despite him having served more than half of the maximum sentence that could be awarded in case of a conviction.

The bench comprising of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain allowed the appeal after hearing arguments from Imam’s counsel and the Delhi Police.

The case against Imam pertains to alleged speeches he made at Jamia Millia Islamia on December 13, 2019, and at the Aligarh Muslim University on December 16, 2019, where he purportedly threatened to sever Assam and the rest of the North East from the country.

Initially registered for sedition, the case against Imam saw Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) invoked later by the Delhi Police’s Special Branch.

Imam had contended before the trial court that he had spent four years in custody and cited Section 436-A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which allows for release if more than half of the maximum sentence prescribed for the offence has been served.

However, the trial court had refused bail on February 17, stating that the accused’s custody could be extended for a further period in “exceptional circumstances” after considering the prosecution’s case.

Imam remains an accused in several cases related to the 2020 communal riots, including one concerning an alleged larger conspiracy behind the violence. He continues to be in judicial custody in the conspiracy case.

In preparation for the vote counting scheduled on June 4, the Election Commission (EC) has enforced Section 144 across all poll counting centers nationwide. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar oversaw the final arrangements via video conference from the EC headquarters in New Delhi, emphasizing the swift and accurate announcement of results, guided by the Election Results Management Group.

To ensure peaceful proceedings in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Chief Electoral Officer Mukesh Kumar Meena announced the deployment of 20 companies of central paramilitary forces. These measures aim to prevent any disturbances during the counting process. Meena highlighted the importance of continuous surveillance in sensitive areas prone to electoral violence, urging officials to act promptly against potential threats.

The Election Commission has mandated thorough checks of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices for accuracy before counting begins. In response to recent incidents of polling violence, the EC has implemented stringent security protocols across counting centers. Three-tier security arrangements, along with closed-circuit cameras in polling booths and control rooms, are in place to closely monitor activities. Surprise inspections of polling centers will occur twice daily to maintain order. Officials have identified tense districts and committed to proactive measures to uphold law and order.

The Election Commission is dedicated to conducting smooth and swift counting operations. Any incidents of unrest or violence will be addressed promptly to preserve the integrity and fairness of the electoral process.

Convoy Vehicle of Brij Bhushan Singh’s Son Kills Two, Injures One

Breaking Now: “2 kids killed as car in convoy of Brij Bhushan Saran Singh’s son, Karan (BJP candidate from Kaiserganj), runs over them. Tragic. VVIP convoys driving at high speed are a menace on the roads. Who cares for the Aam Aadmi when the khaas aadmi convoy is passing by?” tweeted journalist Rajdeep Sardesai.

New Delhi: A fatal accident occurred in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district when a car from the convoy of Karan Bhushan Singh, son of embattled lawmaker Brij Bhushan Singh, struck a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two people, one of whom was a minor, and injuring another. Authorities have arrested the driver and filed a first information report (FIR).

Karan Bhushan Singh, a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for the Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat, may not have been in the convoy during the incident.

The incident was reported by The Hindu to have taken place near Baikunth Degree College on the Colonelganj-Huzoorpur road.

Photos of the SUV, shared on the social media platform X, show “police escort” written on the rear windscreen.

Reports conflict on the ages of the deceased: some sources say both were minors, while others claim one was 17 years old and the other 24. According to NDTV, the FIR includes a statement from the minor victim’s mother, who said her son and his 24-year-old cousin were out to buy medicines when the speeding SUV hit them.

Brij Bhushan Singh, a six-time MP, was not granted a ticket this election cycle, likely due to multiple allegations of sexual harassment and coercion by prominent wrestlers. Despite this, he remains an influential local figure.

0

Hyderabad: An unidentified person on Tuesday (May 28) allegedly made a call stating that a bomb will explode at Praja Bhavan, the official residence of Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, prompting the police to carry out searches, official sources said.

According to sources, an anonymous caller contacted the police control room and warned of a bomb threat targeting Praja Bhavan in Hyderabad city.

Swiftly responding to the threat, the police initiated thorough searches of the premises with the assistance of the bomb disposal squad.

In response to the incident, Telangana Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Development, and Women and Child Welfare, D Anasuya, popularly known as Seethakka, visited Praja Bhavan. She held discussions with officials and the family members of the Deputy CM regarding the matter.

As a precautionary measure, the minister directed officials to intensify security measures at Praja Bhavan and ensure rigorous scrutiny of visitors, as per an official statement.
