Sonia Gandhi Unanimously Re-Elected as Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson

0

In a unanimous decision, Sonia Gandhi has been re-elected as the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson. Her nomination was proposed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and seconded by leaders such as Gaurav Gogoi, Tariq Anwar, and K Sudhakaran.

Sonia Gandhi, a Rajya Sabha member, expressed her gratitude and praised the party’s resilience during the general elections in her re-election speech. She acknowledged the challenges faced by the Indian National Congress, stating, “It was up against a mighty and malevolent machine that was doing its utmost to destroy us. It tried to cripple us financially. It carried out a campaign against us and our leaders that was full of lies and defamation. Many wrote our obituaries.” She also commended Kharge’s leadership, calling him an inspiration and highlighting his extraordinary commitment to the party.

Kharge also expressed his satisfaction with Gandhi’s re-election, stating, “It is good she has been re-elected as CPP and she will keep guiding us.” Shashi Tharoor echoed this sentiment, saying, “I think there was not even a question about it. We all wanted her back. She has been leading and guiding the party for a very long time and there was no question of any other name being considered.”

Additionally, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed a resolution earlier today to appoint party MP Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha. In the recent Lok Sabha polls, Congress increased its seat total from 52 in 2019 to 100, making it the second-largest party.

Notable leaders such as UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and KC Venugopal attended the CWC meeting at the central hall of the Parliament. Other prominent attendees included Karti Chidambaram, Rajiv Shukla, Randeep Surjewala, Ajay Maken, former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, and Shashi Tharoor.

In his opening remarks at the CWC meeting, Kharge reflected on the party’s revival, noting that while there were successes, the party did not perform to its full potential in some states. He emphasized the public’s rejection of the ruling party’s autocratic and anti-democratic ways, stating, “People have spoken against the dictatorial and anti-democratic ways of the ruling party. It is a decisive rejection of the politics of the last 10 years. It is a rejection of the politics of divisiveness, hate, and polarization.”

Chandigarh, June 6: Bollywood actor and BJP MP-elect from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, has accused a CISF security official of slapping her at Chandigarh Airport while she was en route to Delhi.

Ranaut claimed that Kulwinder Kaur, a CISF woman official, assaulted her after an argument at the security check area. According to sources, the alleged provocation was Ranaut’s controversial comments about women in Punjab during the farmers’ agitation.

In a video message posted on X, Ranaut stated, “I am safe, I am perfectly fine. The slapping incident happened during the security check. After completing the security check, the woman officer hit me and started abusing me, claiming she supports the farmers.”

Following the incident, CISF officials suspended Kulwinder Kaur and filed an FIR against her. A probe panel has been established to investigate the matter. A video purportedly from the airport shows Kaur saying, “My mother was also among the protesters when she [Kangana] made these remarks.”

Heavy Rainfall Throws Hyderabad into Chaos

Hyderabad city faced another bout of rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday evening, disrupting normal life. The brief but intense showers led to waterlogging and traffic congestion in various areas, causing inconvenience to commuters. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad and its surroundings are likely to witness generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and winds of up to 40 kmph in the evening or night.

On Wednesday, June 5, the minimum and maximum temperatures recorded were 36.1 degrees Celsius and 24.6 degrees Celsius, respectively. Heavy rains inundated several roads in the city, with reports of significant water clogging received from various areas including Gowliguda, Al Jubail Colony, Yakutpura Bridge, Bilalnagar, Tadbun, Bibi Bazar, Tallabkatta, Mir Ka Daira, and Dabeerpura Darwaza.

Motorists faced challenges navigating through the waterlogged streets, with water levels rising up to four feet in some places. Vehicles parked near shops were swept away in areas such as Moula ka Chilla, Tallab Katta, Bhavani Nagar, Yakutpura, Chanchalguda and Chaderghat, due to heavy water flow.

The heavy downpour also disrupted bus services provided by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), as many bus stops in the old city lacked adequate shelters for commuters. Auto rickshaws temporarily halted operations due to the adverse weather conditions, while traffic flow on key routes like Santoshnagar – Saidabad Road and Bahadurpura – Shivarampally road was affected by ongoing construction work.

Citizens lodged complaints with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) about waterlogging, but immediate action was hampered by the continuous rainfall. The IMD has forecasted the possibility of rain in several zones of Hyderabad, including Khairtabad, Charminar, Kukatpally, Secunderabad , Serilingampally, and LB Nagar,

Additionally, various parts of Telangana are expected to experience moderate to heavy rains accompanied by lightning and gusty winds from June 6 to June 9. GHMC has issued a helpline number for rain-related incidents and assistance requests, which citizens can access via official social media accounts or by calling the hotline numbers 91 90001 13667 or 040-29555500.

Chandrababu Naidu’s Old Criticisms of Modi Resurface Online Amidst BJP’s Shortfall

A five-year-old video and a series of tweets by Chandrababu Naidu criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi are going viral on social media, reigniting discussions about Naidu’s past statements. This resurgence comes as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secures 240 seats, falling short of the 272-seat majority needed to form the government independently. The BJP now relies heavily on alliance partners like Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)].

In one viral tweet from April 16, 2019, Naidu accused Modi of destroying prestigious Indian institutions, stating, “Modi has systematically destroyed prestigious institutions of India. In BJP govt’s rule, institutional autonomy and democracy have been under attack. From CBI to RBI, even a constitutional authority like the Election Commission was not spared.” Another tweet from Naidu read, “Modi-Shah govt has betrayed the nation. The public mandate that brought them to power also has the strength to overthrow them. If BJP tries to victimize our leaders and harass the public, it will pay a heavy price. We will fight fearlessly to save democracy. #UnitedIndiaAtBrigade.”

Additionally, Naidu emphasized in another tweet, “We want to send this message across loud & clear, all efforts by BJP to attack Indian democracy will be met with strong opposition. People must understand that any leader will do better than PM Modi ji. BJP govt has let the people of this country down in all possible ways.”

In an old video from 2019, Naidu is seen discussing with a journalist, emphasizing that his party follows a secular agenda and previously allied with Modi out of political compulsion. He stressed the current necessity for democracy, stating that “all leaders are better than Narendra Modi” and that “Prime Ministers were chosen after elections.”

Citing Naidu’s tweets and the viral video, many on social media are urging him to reconsider his position in the NDA and to join the INDIA alliance instead. “Hope you will stand by your statements and adhere to your political ideals to protect the constitutional institutions of the country (sic),” read a tweet. “So true sir (sic),” retweeted actor Prakash Raj.

Despite this, Naidu has confirmed his participation in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting on Wednesday. Reports also suggest that the Congress has reached out to both Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar through multiple channels, hoping they might reconsider their position in the NDA alliance in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his former INDIA ally, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, were reportedly seen taking the same flight to the national capital on Wednesday.

PM Modi Resigns: Political Leaders Converge in Delhi for Crucial Government Formation Talks

0

Narendra Modi has resigned, and the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has asked him to continue as caretaker government. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Modi, has fallen 32 seats short of the 272 needed for a single-party majority.

The President must now weigh all possible options for forming a new government. This situation, where no party has a majority, recalls instances from 1991 to 2009 when various forms of coalition governments were formed, such as the Congress-led minority government under P.V. Narasimha Rao and the UPA coalition under Manmohan Singh.

Despite the lack of a majority, some news stories, citing “sources,” are hastily announcing that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will form the government and the swearing-in will occur on June 8. This rush seems unseemly given the formal process required for a transition of power when a ruling party loses its majority.

P.D.T. Achary, former Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, highlights that political parties are beginning the exercise of government-making. He explains that the Sarkaria Commission recommends calling the largest pre-poll alliance to form the government first, followed by the single-largest party, and then post-poll alliances if necessary.

Senior advocate and MP Kapil Sibal notes that after resigning, a party or coalition must elect a leader who would then be invited to form the government if they can demonstrate the required support. Similarly, former PMO official Sanjaya Baru points out that Modi must demonstrate the support of 272 members before being invited to form a government. Until then, he remains a caretaker PM without the power to make policy decisions.

A former finance secretary outlines four potential scenarios:

  1. The NDA forms the government under Modi’s leadership.
  2. The NDA forms the government under another BJP leader.
  3. The NDA government will have a non-BJP Prime Minister.
  4. The INDIA bloc, with post-poll alliance support, forms the government.

Historical precedents show varied approaches to government formation. In 1996, President Shankar Dayal Sharma faced criticism for inviting the single-largest party, the BJP, which could not sustain its government beyond 13 days. By 1998, President K.R. Narayanan required letters of support from parties. In 1977, the Janata Party, a post-poll formation that included the BJP’s predecessor, came to power. Similarly, in 2004, the Congress led the single-largest coalition, the UPA, also a post-poll formation.

Pappu Yadav Wins Purnia Lok Sabha Seat

0

“Pappu Yadav said something to the media after his victory, including a remark about PM Modi. Watch the video.”

Pappu Yadav has emerged victorious in the Purnia Lok Sabha seat. He faced a strong challenge from BJP candidate Santosh Kushwaha, with both candidates closely contesting for the lead. In the end, Pappu Yadav won by more than 30,000 votes. RJD had fielded Bima Bharti from Purnia, but she was not a significant contender in this race.

Earlier reports indicated surprising trends in Bihar’s ‘hot seat,’ Purnia. RJD candidate Bima Bharti had garnered only around 6,000 votes. The main competition was between Pappu Yadav and Santosh Kushwaha (BJP), with the lead constantly shifting between the two.

Meanwhile, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s eldest daughter, Misa Bharti, is maintaining a steady lead in the Patliputra Lok Sabha seat. This seat is witnessing a major shift, as Misa Bharti, who lost to Ram Kripal in the last two Lok Sabha elections, is now significantly ahead of BJP candidate Ram Kripal by around 24,000 votes.

Bihar has 40 Lok Sabha seats, contested by 497 candidates, including 39 women. Voting was conducted in seven phases, with a total voter turnout of 56.96%. In the previous election, the NDA had won 39 out of 40 seats, but political experts consider it nearly impossible to replicate that performance this time. Vote counting is taking place at 40 centers across Bihar, under strict security measures. http://www.akainewsindia.com
