Hangzhou: Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen stamped her authority in the women’s 50kg by registering a dominant 5-0 win over Vietnam’s Thi Tam Nguyen while Preeti Pawar (54kg) moved to the quarterfinals of the Asian Games here on Sunday.
In a rematch of March’s world championship final, Zareen once again defeated two-time Asian Champion Nguyen by unanimous decision to move to the pre-quarters.
Putting up a dominating show, talented Indian boxer Preeti notched up an RSC win over Jordan’s Silina Alhasanat.
One of only four boxers to not get a first round bye in the 50kg event despite being the reigning world champion, Zareen controlled the proceedings from the word go.
In the opening two rounds Zareen landed accurate punches, rattling her opponent.
Such was her power that the referee was forced to give Nguyen the eight count twice in 30 seconds in the opening round.
Nguyen tried to attack in the second round but Zareen retaliated with strong combination punches, forcing a third eight count upon the Vietnamese boxer.
With her work done, Zareen conserved energy in the final three minutes, defending beautifully with the help of her nimble footwork.
Zareen will face Chorong Bak of South Korea in the Round of 16 while a tough bout awaits Preeti. The Indian teenager will have to fight seasoned Kazakh boxer and three-time worlds medallist Zhaina Shekerbekova
Earlier, the 19-year-old Preeti dominated her Jordanian opponent, winning the bout by RSC (referee stops contest).
Preeti, who made the pre-quarterfinals of the World Championships earlier this year, is now one bout away from assuring herself of a medal and an Olympic quota.
Playing a strategic bout, Preeti started the contest on a defensive mode before unleashing her attacking game.
After a sedate start, the Indian went on the offensive and landed perfect jabs and hooks to win the opening two rounds easily.
After showing promise initially, Silina faded away and looked at sea as the referee gave her two standing counts in the second and third rounds before stopping the contest.

New Delhi: Following the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) seizure of properties belonging to Canada-based “designated individual terrorist” Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, reports indicate that the Indian government has instructed investigative agencies to locate properties owned by other wanted terrorists residing abroad.
According to sources with knowledge of the matter, the government has directed these agencies to pinpoint the properties of Khalistani terrorists settled in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, with the intent to cancel their Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) status to prevent them from entering India.
This move by the government comes on the heels of the NIA’s actions against Pannun, which resulted in the confiscation of his properties in Chandigarh and Amritsar.
The government believes that this step will serve a dual purpose: financially straining these terrorists with Indian connections and preventing them from entering the country.
Sources suggest that the government has identified 19 fugitive Khalistani terrorists residing in countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, and others. These individuals, their properties, and their locations are as follows:
Paramjit Singh Pamma (UK)
Wadhwa Singh Babbar aka Chacha (Pakistan)
Kulwant Singh Muthda (UK)
JS Dhaliwal (US)
Sukhpak Singh (UK)
Harriet Singh aka Rana Sungh (US)
Sarabjit Singh Benoor (UK)
Kulwant Singh aka Kanta (UK)
Harjap Singh aka Jappi Dingh (US)
Ranjit Singh Neeta (Pakistan)
Gurmeet Singh aka Bagga
Gurpreet Singh aka Baaghi (UK)
Jasmin Singh Hakimzada (UAE)
Gurjant Singh Dhillon (Australia)
Jasbit Singh Rode (Europe and Canada)
Amardeep Singh Purewal (US)
Jatinder Singh Grewal (Canada)
Dupinder Jeet (UK)
S Himmat Singh (US)
The government plans to invoke section 33(5) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P)A) to confiscate their properties.
Previously, security agencies had identified a group of 11 individuals believed to be involved in both gang activities and terrorism, residing in Canada, the United States, and Pakistan. This list includes individuals like Harvinder Sandhu, Lakhbir Singh, Sukhdool Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Charnjit Singh, Sanawer Dhillon, Gurpinder Singh, Gaurav Patyal Lucky, and Anmol Bishnoi.
The government’s actions are expected to address concerns related to terrorists holding OCI cards who could potentially influence impressionable youths to join their cause in India. NIA investigations in the Pannun case have revealed that his organization, Sikhs for Justice, was exploiting cyberspace to radicalize and incite youth to commit terrorist acts.
Furthermore, Pannun was identified as the “main handler and controller” of the SFJ, which was declared an ‘Unlawful Association’ by the Government of India in July 2019. Pannun, designated as a ‘designated individual terrorist’ in July 2020, had been actively encouraging Punjab-based gangsters and youth via social media to support the cause of an independent Khalistan, posing a challenge to India’s sovereignty, integrity, and security, according to NIA findings.
Recent attacks on Indian missions in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries have brought attention to these terrorists with OCI cards residing abroad.
Congress Leader Shares Insights on Election Chances in MP, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana
In a recent statement, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed optimism about his party’s chances in the upcoming Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh (MP), Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, scheduled to take place later this year. During a media conclave, he provided insights into the party’s electoral prospects in these key states.
Rahul Gandhi confidently stated that the Congress party is poised to secure victory in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, asserting, “We are certainly winning Madhya Pradesh, and we are certainly winning Chhattisgarh.” He also expressed a positive outlook for Telangana, saying, “I would say, right now, we are probably winning Telangana.” Regarding Rajasthan, he acknowledged a tight contest, adding, “Rajasthan, we are very close, and we think we will be able to win. That is what it looks like. By the way, that is also what the BJP internally is saying.”
The Congress leader emphasized that it is inconceivable for the Congress party to not win any of these states in the upcoming Assembly elections. This sentiment aligns with what he suggested the BJP is also acknowledging internally.
Rahul Gandhi further discussed the evolving political landscape, highlighting that the Opposition is adapting and collaborating effectively. He suggested that the BJP should anticipate surprises in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, emphasizing, “We are adapting to a situation where the BJP controls the media. Don’t think the opposition is not capable of adapting, we are adapting, we are working together, we are 60 per cent of India’s population. BJP is in for a surprise in 2024 (Lok Sabha polls).”
In terms of campaign strategy, Rahul Gandhi pointed out that the Congress party has been successful in controlling the narrative in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the lead-up to the polls. He also acknowledged the positive sentiment towards the government in Rajasthan, attributing it to factors like anti-incumbency.
Regarding recent controversies, Rahul Gandhi commented on BJP’s diversionary tactics and expressed support for the demand for a caste census. He noted that the BJP resorts to such tactics to distract from important issues and emphasized that the Congress has learned how to handle such situations effectively.
Reflecting on past elections, Rahul Gandhi highlighted the importance of constructing a clear narrative and vision for the state, as demonstrated in Karnataka. He credited their success in Karnataka to this strategy, which allowed them to control the narrative and engage effectively with voters. In the context of Telangana, he asserted that the Congress is currently steering the narrative while marginalizing the BJP’s influence in the state.
As the Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram draw closer, the political landscape in these states remains dynamic, with both the Congress and BJP gearing up for a competitive electoral battle.
