Key Considerations for AI Regulation in Healthcare Released by WHO

0

The World Health Organization (WHO) has underscored the significance of regulating artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, emphasizing the potential challenges in a report published on Wednesday.

Highlights of WHO’s Regulatory Considerations:

  • Emphasizes the necessity of ensuring the safety and effectiveness of AI tools.
  • Advocates for making AI systems accessible to those in need.
  • Encourages dialogue between developers and users of AI tools.

The WHO acknowledges the substantial potential of AI in healthcare, as it can enhance existing medical devices, strengthen clinical trials, refine diagnostic and treatment methods, and augment the capabilities of healthcare professionals.

However, a report by GlobalData, a data and analytics company, points out that the rapid deployment of AI technologies, while bringing benefits, also carries risks due to the limited understanding of their long-term implications, which could potentially harm healthcare professionals and patients.

Alexandra Murdoch, Senior Analyst at GlobalData, stated, “AI has already improved several devices and systems, and there are so many benefits of AI. However, there are risks too with these tools and the rapid adoption of them.”

AI systems in medical and healthcare settings frequently have access to personal and medical data, necessitating regulatory frameworks to ensure privacy and security. Other challenges associated with AI in healthcare include unethical data collection, cybersecurity risks, and the potential for amplifying biases and spreading misinformation.

A recent study conducted by Stanford University revealed biases in AI chatbots, particularly in responses that perpetuated false medical information about people of color. These instances are deeply concerning, as they could lead to misdiagnoses or improper treatment for patients of color.

In response to these challenges, the WHO has proposed six areas for the regulation of AI in healthcare. These areas include ensuring transparency and documentation, managing risks, validating data and clearly defining AI’s intended use, committing to data quality, addressing privacy and data protection, and fostering collaboration.

Alexandra Murdoch stated, “With these areas for regulation outlined, governments and regulatory bodies can follow them and hopefully develop some regulations to protect healthcare professionals and patients, and also use AI to its full potential in healthcare.”

AIMIM Plans to Field Fresh Faces, Including Woman, in Telangana Assembly Elections

0

HYDERABAD: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), under the leadership of Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, is gearing up for the upcoming Telangana assembly elections with an ambitious plan to introduce new and diverse candidates.

Two key constituencies, Charminar and Yakutpura, are poised for an infusion of young talent. In a strategic move, the party leadership is engaged in discussions with two longstanding MLAs to make way for these promising newcomers.

AIMIM’s floor leader, Akbaruddin Owaisi, recently conducted a three-hour meeting with Charminar’s sitting MLA, Mumtaz Ahmed Khan. This discussion was centered around persuading Khan to vacate his seat in favor of a young candidate. Interestingly, Khan has expressed the desire for his ticket to be passed on to his son, Imtiaz Ahmed Khan, a doctor with eight years of political involvement.

In another notable development, Akbaruddin Owaisi visited the residence of Yakutpura MLA Ahmed Pasha Quadri to explore the possibility of fielding a youthful candidate. However, Quadri, citing health reasons, did not seem enthusiastic about contesting the upcoming November 30 elections. There is speculation within AIMIM circles that Nampally MLA Jaffar Hussain Meraj might be relocated to a different constituency.

Sources indicate that AIMIM is on the verge of finalizing its candidate list and the number of constituencies it will contest, with an announcement expected by the end of this month. There is a buzz about the party’s potential participation in seats like Jubilee Hills, Rajendranagar, and Nizamabad Urban.

In the previous 2018 assembly elections, AIMIM successfully retained Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura, Bahadurpura, Malakpet, Karwan, and Nampally seats but lost Rajendranagar.

Front-runners for the Yakutpura and Charminar seats include former mayor Majid Hussain, Nooruddin Owaisi (son of Akbaruddin Owaisi), and Imtiaz Ahmed Khan (son of Mumtaz Ahmed Khan). Notably, the party is also exploring the possibility of fielding a female candidate in one of the constituencies.

Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving political landscape as AIMIM gears up for the Telangana assembly elections.

Fire Erupts at Ramagundam’s TS GENCO B-Thermal Power Plant

0

Ramagundam: A fire broke out at the 62.5 MW TS GENCO B-Thermal power plant in Ramagundam late on Tuesday night.

The fire reportedly originated in a turbine boiler due to a short circuit. Quick thinking by the plant’s employees prevented a major disaster. According to official sources, during the process of transferring coal into a boiler from mills, coal was accidentally spilled into the control room. The presence of coal powder contributed to a significant short circuit, resulting in flames that spread to nearby rubber cables. This incident caused the plant to trip, but the alert staff managed to extinguish the flames with the assistance of fire tenders.

Plant authorities expressed relief that there were no casualties. They estimated that it could take up to 10 days to complete the necessary repair work and resume plant operations. The plant had previously undergone scheduled annual repair works and had only recently resumed operations on October 20, having been shut down since September 12.

Discontented TRS Leaders from Tandur Vikarabad Join Congress

0

Hyderabad: As the Telangana State Assembly elections draw closer, there has been a noteworthy exodus of leaders from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to the Congress party. In a significant development, several disgruntled TRS leaders from Tandur Vikarabad decided to leave their TRS cars and formally join the Congress party. This move marks another key party switch amidst the election preparations.
In the lead-up to the elections, a consistent interchange of party affiliations has emerged, with members transitioning between the Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the Congress, reflecting the ongoing shifts in the political landscape.

Notably, just a few days ago, influential leaders and council members from the Tandur Mandal in the BRS decided to realign with the Congress party. In response, leaders and members from the Basheerabad Mandal in Congress reciprocated the move by joining the BRS.

However, today, the Tandur Town witnessed a significant setback for the BRS as several of its senior leaders, three municipal council members, a municipal cooperative member, and several party workers opted to switch their allegiance to the Congress party.

In an official ceremony held in Tandur Town, Dr. Sampath Kumar, a senior leader and former president of Tandur Town BRS, formally became a member of the Congress party. This shift also included council members Abdul Razzaq and Neerja Bala Reddy, and municipal cooperative member Abdul Quayyum, along with other prominent figures from the BRS such as Saeed Masood Ahmed, Mohammed Mahmood Khan, Tandra Rakesh, and numerous other BRS leaders and activists, who have now fully embraced the Congress party.

The political transition of BRS leaders, three council members, and a cooperative member to the Congress party has sparked discussions in both political and media circles, resonating with the local population.

The event also saw the presence of various Congress leaders and party workers, alongside Dr. Sampath Kumar, who enjoys the trust of Dr. P. Mahender Reddy, District Cooperative Central Bank (DCCB) Hyderabad and Rangareddy Chairman.

The inclusion of these BRS leaders, three council members, and a cooperative member within the Congress party has emerged as a topic of political and public interest, underscoring the ongoing realignments in alliances and party dynamics as the Assembly elections draw nearer.

“NCERT Panel’s Suggestion to Replace ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ Criticized as Wrong, Allegations of NDA Involvement”

0

In a spirited response, Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, D K Shivakumar, expressed strong disapproval of the recent recommendation by an NCERT-convened panel to replace “India” with “Bharat” in school textbooks. He also alleged that the move bore the influence of the NDA government.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) had formed a high-level committee for social sciences to revise the school curriculum, and this committee recommended the substitution of “India” with “Bharat” in textbooks across all grade levels.

Committee Chairperson, C I Isaac, explained that the panel also proposed incorporating “classical history” in lieu of “ancient history” within the curriculum, along with integrating the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) into the syllabus for all subjects.

D K Shivakumar, in his response, questioned the wisdom of this decision by highlighting the presence of the Reserve Bank of India, Indian Administrative Services, and Indian Foreign Services, where the term “Bharat” is not employed. He raised the issue of the term “Republic of India” on Indian passports, further underscoring his concerns.

Shivakumar stated, “I think something wrong has happened to this government. I don’t know why they are confusing the young minds of Indians.” He contended that the move was influenced by the NDA government and deemed it “completely wrong.” He urged the Central government not to adopt the recommendation.

He emphatically declared, “You can’t change the history of India,” and reiterated the importance of Indian independence, asserting, “We call it Indian independence. We don’t call it Bharat independence.”

Shivakumar declared that Karnataka would maintain the status quo and consult within the Cabinet, indicating no plans to implement the proposed change.

Alarming Exposure of Young People to E-Cigarette Advertising: Study Reveals

0

A recent study conducted by the George Institute for Global Health has unveiled concerning statistics regarding e-cigarette advertising and its impact on public exposure. The study, which surveyed approximately 1000 people in India, China, Australia, and the UK, within the age group of 15-30 years, sheds light on the prevalent exposure to e-cigarette promotions through various media channels.

Shocking figures reveal that a staggering 85% of respondents, especially among the young adult demographic, reported exposure to e-cigarette advertising through television, print, radio, and social media. This revelation comes in stark contrast to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), which advises the prohibition of all forms of e-cigarette advertising, promotion, and sponsorship.

The survey further indicates that social media platforms, vape shops, supermarkets, petrol stations, and other retail establishments are significant hubs for e-cigarette advertising. The average number of media types to which respondents were exposed stood at 5, underlining the extensive reach of these advertisements.

Simone Pettigrew, associated with The George Institute for Global Health, stressed the need for urgent attention in addressing these forms of exposure due to their potential link with e-cigarette usage.

The increased use of e-cigarettes among children, adolescents, and young adults has raised substantial public health concerns. While e-cigarettes are considered less harmful than traditional cigarettes, they contain ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deeply into the lungs, potentially harming lung health and interfering with the brain development of young individuals.

Researchers involved in the study argue that exposure to e-cigarette advertising can alter people’s perception of the associated risks, fueling interest and increasing the likelihood of usage.

Notably, India has imposed strict regulations on e-cigarettes. The Prohibition of Electronic Cigarette Act (PECA) 2019 bans their production, manufacture, import, export, transport, sale, distribution, storage, and advertisement in any form or quantity. However, recent data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reveals a significant surge in e-cigarette users in India in 2023, with over 100,000 users compared to approximately 10,000 in 2019. This surge, particularly prevalent among young people and adults under the age of 30, raises questions about the effectiveness of these regulatory measures.
