Mahua Moitra, Member of Parliament from Trinamool Congress, has conveyed her inability to appear before the Ethics Committee on the scheduled date of October 31.

In a letter addressed to the committee’s chairperson, Vinod Kumar Sonkar, Moitra explained that she cannot attend the proceedings due to prior commitments and requested to be rescheduled after November 5. She stated, “I look very much forward to appearing before the Committee at any date chosen by you after November 5, 2023.”

This development follows her earlier statement expressing eagerness to defend herself against the allegations, despite her busy schedule due to ongoing Durga Puja celebrations in West Bengal. Moitra highlighted the circumstances surrounding the summons, mentioning, “Chairman, Ethics Committee announced my 31/10 summons on live TV way before the official letter was emailed to me at 19:20 hrs. All complaints & suo moto affidavits also released to the media. I look forward to deposing immediately after my pre-scheduled constituency programs end on Nov 4.”

The Ethics Committee had previously recorded statements from advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and had decided to summon Mahua Moitra on October 31.

Moitra, in her response, stressed her desire for a fair hearing and requested that she be given a chance to defend herself. She noted that, “The Committee against the order of natural justice, if I may humbly add, summoned and heard the complainants Shri Dubey & Shri Dehadrai on 26/10/2023 before allowing me, the alleged accused, a chance to be heard.”

Due to her pre-committed engagements during the Durga Puja celebrations in West Bengal, Moitra stated, “I represent the state of West Bengal where Durga Puja is the biggest festival. I am already committed to attending numerous pre-scheduled Vijaya Dashami Sammelans/meetings (both government and political) in my constituency from 30th October to 4th November 2023 and cannot be in Delhi on 31st October 2023.”

She requested the committee’s understanding and flexibility in rescheduling the hearing, stating, “Therefore, I request to be given time to appear in person before the committee at any date and time of the committee’s choice after 5th November 2023.”

UN Overwhelmingly Calls for Aid Truce Between Israel and Hamas

0

In a historic move, the United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas. This resolution, although not legally binding, carries significant political weight and reflects the global consensus on the current crisis.

The international community is deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict in the region, particularly in light of Israel’s increased ground operations in Gaza following the worst Hamas attack on Israeli civilians in the nation’s 75-year history on October 7.

The General Assembly vote resulted in 120 member states in favor of the resolution, with 45 abstentions and 14 countries, including Israel and the United States, voting against it. Notably, this decision comes after the United Nations Security Council failed four times in the past two weeks to take action.

This development underscores the urgent need for a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance in the region, as well as the protection of civilians affected by the ongoing conflict. The international community continues to watch closely as the situation unfolds.

Supporters of Palestine Hold Peaceful Protest at Jantar Mantar, Delhi; Demonstrators Detained

0

In a show of solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian population, “Friends of Palestine” organized a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar following Friday prayers. The event drew participants from across Delhi, with students and women making a notable presence.

However, the protest took an unexpected turn as Delhi police detained several demonstrators, sparking concerns regarding the curtailment of their democratic right to voice their opinions through peaceful protest. Despite these arrests, the demonstration continued, highlighting the resilience of the supporters of the Palestinian cause.

In a statement, “Friends of Palestine” conveyed their clear message: an immediate ceasefire, the cessation of the Gaza blockade, and international intervention to stop the ongoing violence against Palestinians, including innocent women and children. They called for the severance of all ties with Israel and urged the global community to exert pressure on Israel to adhere to international laws.

The group further appealed to the Indian government to actively engage in efforts to secure the freedom and statehood of Palestine, emphasizing that such actions are not only in India’s national interest but also aligned with the pursuit of justice on the global stage. The reaffirmation of India’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause was a key highlight.

The detention of peaceful protesters by the Delhi police has raised concerns about the preservation of democratic principles and the citizens’ right to engage in peaceful demonstrations. Upholding this fundamental democratic value is of paramount importance.

“Friends of Palestine” remains resolute in its pursuit of justice and continues to stand in solidarity with the international community against the injustices endured by the Palestinian people.

The sentiments were further echoed on Twitter, with one user sharing their detainment and expressing concerns about the prevalence of divisive and hateful gatherings amidst the broader support for the Palestinian cause. #indiawithpalestine.

“Emotional U.N. Meeting: Palestinian Ambassador Pleads for an End to the Bombs and to Save Lives in Gaza” but Israel insists Hamas must be ‘obliterated’

0

In the latest news from the United Nations General Assembly, the ongoing conflict in Gaza was the center of attention. The Palestinian ambassador passionately appealed for an end to the bombings, while Israel’s envoy remained firm in their commitment to dealing with Hamas. Despite four failed attempts by the Security Council to agree on a course of action, Arab nations were set to adopt a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza.

During the assembly’s emergency special session, most speakers expressed their support for the Arab resolution’s call for a cease-fire. However, Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan argued that a cease-fire would give Hamas an opportunity to rearm, posing a continued threat to Israeli citizens.

Passionate pleas for a cease-fire and the protection of Palestinian civilians facing Israeli airstrikes, as well as the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid, were voiced by numerous countries. The conflict has led to casualties on both sides, with a significant loss of life in Gaza according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Another important issue discussed was the situation of more than 220 hostages taken from Israel. Iran’s foreign minister stated that Hamas is prepared to release civilian prisoners to Iran and called on the international community to take responsibility for releasing the 6,000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. Iran, along with Qatar and Turkey, expressed readiness to participate in this humanitarian effort.

It’s worth noting that Iran is a key supporter of Hamas, and Qatar has played a role in the release of some Israeli civilians.
