In a grim incident, Moreh Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chingtham Anand lost his life in Manipur’s Moreh when he was shot by suspected militants. The tragic event occurred while Anand was inspecting a newly constructed helipad at the Eastern ground in the border town. Despite being rushed to a nearby health center, he succumbed to his injuries.

In response, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed deep sorrow over the ‘cold-blooded killing’ of Anand. He took to social media, stating, “Deeply saddened by the cold-blooded killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand, OC Moreh Police this morning. His dedication to serve and protect the people will always be remembered. The perpetrators will be brought to justice.”

This unfortunate incident follows recent demands from various civil society organizations, especially those in Moreh, calling for the withdrawal of state forces from the border town. The backdrop of this tragedy is the widespread violence that has plagued Manipur since May 3, when clashes erupted in Churachandpur town. These clashes were triggered by protests against a proposed change to the state’s reservation matrix, granting scheduled tribe (ST) status to the Meitei community.

Since the initial clashes, the violence has escalated, highlighting the deep-rooted ethnic tensions in the state. Shockingly, the toll stands at 175 lives lost and over 50,000 people displaced. The aftermath has left Manipur scarred, with homes, businesses, and places of worship destroyed. The state has also grappled with a prolonged internet blackout. Additionally, mobs targeted police stations and armouries, looting a significant number of arms and ammunition, with only a fraction being recovered so far. The situation remains tense as authorities work to restore peace and bring those responsible for the violence to justice.

IMD Anticipates a Warmer November as El Nino Grows Stronger

In a recent announcement, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above-normal minimum temperatures for the upcoming month of November across most of India. However, some regions in the northwest and west-central areas may experience exceptions due to the intensifying El Nino conditions. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of IMD, shared this information during a press conference.

The IMD forecasts that the country’s overall rainfall in November is expected to be within the normal range, covering 77-123 percent of the long-period average. Additionally, above-normal rainfall is anticipated in specific regions, including the southernmost parts of the Indian peninsula, large portions of northwest India, and various areas in the east-central, east, and northeast regions.

El Nino conditions are currently prevailing in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean is experiencing positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions. Global forecasts indicate that El Nino conditions are likely to persist throughout the upcoming season, while positive IOD conditions are expected to weaken in the coming months, according to the IMD.

However, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra also mentioned that models suggest El Nino conditions are unlikely to extend into the next monsoon season. It is worth noting that El Nino conditions, characterized by the warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean near South America, are associated with weaker monsoon winds and drier weather in India. The Indian Ocean Dipole is defined as the difference in sea surface temperatures between the western and eastern parts of the Indian Ocean, near Africa and Indonesia, respectively.

ED summons Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal for questioning in liquor policy scam case

0

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a summons to Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal for questioning on November 2 regarding an alleged liquor policy scam case.

Reliable sources have confirmed that Kejriwal is required to appear before the ED on November 2. It’s worth noting that earlier in April this year, Kejriwal underwent questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with this matter.

This development coincides with the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the bail plea of former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. The bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna and S.V.N. Bhatti has also directed that Sisodia’s trial must be concluded within the next six to eight months. The bench emphasized that if the trial progresses slowly, Sisodia retains the option to file another bail application. Justice Khanna, during the judgment delivery, highlighted that while numerous questions remain unanswered, there is a tentative establishment of a key aspect concerning the transfer of Rs 338 crore.

The ED’s case is rooted in the CBI’s First Information Report (FIR) registered in August last year. Notably, the ED had taken AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh into custody earlier this month in connection with this case.

New Delhi : In a significant development, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar convened a meeting with the family members of eight Indian nationals who were recently handed a death sentence by a Qatari court. During the meeting, Jaishankar conveyed the government’s unwavering commitment to the case and assured the families of their highest priority.

The eight individuals, all former Indian Navy personnel, were sentenced to death by Qatar’s Court of First Instance last Thursday, a ruling that has been described by India as ‘deeply’ shocking. The government has vowed to explore all legal avenues in the case.

“Met this morning with the families of the 8 Indians detained in Qatar. Stressed that the Government attaches the highest importance to the case. Fully share the concerns and pain of the families,” Jaishankar stated.

He underlined that the Government is committed to making every possible effort to secure the release of these Indian nationals and will closely coordinate with the families to achieve this objective.

The Indian citizens, who were employed by the private company Al Dahra, were arrested in August last year, reportedly in connection with an alleged case of espionage. However, neither the Qatari authorities nor the Indian government disclosed the charges against these individuals publicly.

In response to the Qatari court’s ruling, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced its intention to accord ‘high importance’ to this case and explore all available legal options. Charges were filed against the eight Indian navy veterans on March 25, and they were tried under Qatari law.
