New Delhi : On the occasion of Children’s Day and the 134th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi issued a poignant statement, condemning the ongoing violence in Palestine. In her address, she asserted that humanity has “failed” the thousands of children caught in the crossfire of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Gandhi, a vocal critic of the Israel-Hamas war, reiterated her call for an end to the “horrendous violence” that has claimed the lives of civilians, including children. She expressed deep concern for the plight of the Palestinian children, stating, “They deserved better from humanity. We must all raise our voices and demand an end to the horrendous violence being committed against them.”
This statement followed her earlier criticism of the international community, where she denounced the death toll of over 10,000 people, including 5,000 children, in the Israel-Hamas conflict. She decried the lack of a collective shock to the conscience among those supporting what she referred to as a “genocide.” Gandhi highlighted the tragic situation in Gaza, citing WHO reports of one child being killed every ten minutes and the dire conditions leading to the removal of babies from incubators due to a lack of oxygen.
Gandhi’s remarks underscored her dismay at the ongoing violence and her call for an immediate end to hostilities. She particularly criticized governments supporting the destruction and questioned when “it’s going to be enough.”
The situation escalated as more than 10,000 people lost their lives in Gaza since Israel initiated its military offensive. The conflict began after Hamas, an Islamist militant group, attacked on October 7, resulting in casualties and kidnappings. Israel responded with a determined air and ground offensive, vowing to eliminate the militant group.
In a diplomatic development, India abstained from voting on a Jordan-drafted resolution calling for a truce in Israel. However, India supported an amendment proposed by Canada, which condemned Hamas’s attack. Priyanka Gandhi expressed her shock and shame at India’s decision to abstain from voting for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The ongoing conflict in the region continues to draw global attention, with leaders and activists calling for immediate intervention to address the humanitarian crisis in Palestine.
