Sydney : In a notable development, thousands of Australian actors and musicians have pledged to visibly express their support for Palestine by incorporating symbolic elements into their performances. According to Sky News host James Macpherson, this commitment represents an “escalation” following the well-known protest at the Sydney Theatre Company.
A collective of 3,200 artists has penned an open letter addressed to Anthony Albanese, urging their fellow performers and colleagues to join in by “wearing Palestinian scarves” during their upcoming performances on Tuesday. The letter encourages individuals to adorn themselves with keffiyehs, lapel pins, or Palestinian solidarity shirts wherever they work.
The powerful statement concludes with the phrase “From the River to the Sea. Always was always will be,” signifying a resolute commitment to the cause. This move by the Australian artistic community not only amplifies their support for Palestine but also transforms cultural expression into a platform for solidarity and advocacy.
Lucknow : In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is slated to address a public meeting in the Rohaniya assembly segment, a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency Varanasi, on December 24. Shravan Kumar, Bihar minister and Janata Dal (United) secretary (organisation), confirmed the program after finalizing the venue during a visit to Rohaniya on Saturday.
This rally will mark Nitish Kumar’s inaugural appearance for the Lok Sabha elections, with a focus not only on Varanasi but also on key areas like Azamgarh, Pratapgarh, Prayagraj, Phulpur, Ambedkar Nagar, and Mirzapur, according to Shravan Kumar.
Taking a swipe at the ruling BJP, Nitish Kumar alleged that caste and religion dominate their agenda, while their focus is on “brotherhood and love.” Criticizing the Congress, he acknowledged delays in strategizing due to certain leaders’ mistakes but asserted efforts to rectify them.
Rohaniya, a Patel-majority assembly constituency in Varanasi, holds significance in every election since 2012. Nitish Kumar’s rallies in various places, including Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, and Prayagraj, aim to convey pre-poll posturing and possibly encourage the Congress to yield space to regional players in states like UP.
The choice of locations aligns with strategic Kurmi outreach, as Nitish Kumar, a Kurmi himself, actively engages in east UP, where the BJP supports Apna Dal (S), a Kurmi-centric party. This move signals efforts to woo the influential Kurmi vote, impacting outcomes in approximately 12 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Nitish Kumar’s rallies are expected to add momentum to the political landscape in the lead-up to the crucial elections.

Bareilly: In a devastating incident, eight individuals, including a child, lost their lives when their SUV collided with an oncoming truck and subsequently caught fire in Bareilly, as confirmed by the police on Sunday.
The fatal accident occurred late on Saturday near Dubhaura village in the Bhojipura area on the Bareilly-Nainital Road. According to preliminary reports, the SUV’s driver lost control of the vehicle following a tire puncture. The SUV veered across the road barrier, where it collided with a truck traveling from the opposite direction.
Upon reaching the scene, law enforcement found the SUV engulfed in flames, making immediate rescue efforts futile. Superintendent of Police Sushil Chandrabhan confirmed the tragic demise of all eight occupants, including the child.
The ill-fated SUV belonged to Sumit Gupta, a grocery shop owner, who had loaned it to Furkan. Asif, a customer from Narayan Nagla village, had borrowed the SUV from Gupta, claiming his nephew Furkan needed it to attend a wedding in Bareilly.
The accident occurred just a kilometer ahead of Bhojipura police station, with eyewitnesses reporting an exceptionally high speed that led to the SUV breaching the four-lane road’s divider and colliding with the truck.
As the vehicle caught fire, the occupants were unable to exit due to malfunctioning central locking systems. Although bystanders attempted to rescue those inside, the intensity of the flames hindered their efforts. The truck involved in the collision also caught fire.
Bareilly’s Chief Fire Officer, Chandra Mohan Sharma, noted the challenges in determining the accident’s cause. Possibilities such as a tire burst, driver fatigue, or impairment due to alcohol are being considered. The exact reason will be clarified following investigations by the forensic team. The victims, all residents of Baheri area, are yet to be officially identified.
Hyderabad : In a startling development, Hyderabad police have filed a case against Kalyan, the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of former Telangana Minister for Animal Husbandry, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, along with four others. They are accused of allegedly ransacking the office of the Animal Husbandry Department and stealing files.
The Nampally Police Station registered the case based on a complaint filed by Mandala Laxmaiah, the watchman at the Department of Animal Husbandry office in Shanti Nagar, Masab Tank. The suspects have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including criminal breach of trust, mischief and causing damage, trespass, destruction of document, and abetment.
Srinivas Yadav, formerly a minister in the BRS government, is at the center of this controversy. The Congress recently won power in the elections, displacing the BRS government.
According to the complainant, while conducting routine checks on Friday evening, he discovered that the lock of Kalyan’s office room was open. Upon closer inspection, he found documents scattered, and some were placed in a black cover. Suspecting foul play, he reported that someone had entered the room and taken away vital documents.
The watchman asserted that on December 8, around 5:30 a.m., OSD Kalyan, along with computer operators Mohan and Elijah, and attenders Venkatesh and Prasanth, were present at the office. He suspects that, given the recent change in government, Kalyan and the others might have seized the opportunity to remove important documents.
This incident marks the second in the month, following a fire in the tourism office in Hyderabad on December 1, where files, computers, and furniture were destroyed. The cause of that fire remains unknown. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
