House Republicans Greenlight Biden Impeachment Inquiry Amid President’s Accusations of a ‘Baseless Political Stunt’

0

In a significant move on Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives greenlit an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Despite reservations among some Republicans about the lack of evidence supporting allegations of misconduct, the party unanimously supported the politically charged process in a 221-212 party-line vote. This vote places the entire House Republican conference on record supporting an impeachment process that, if successful, could result in severe consequences for the president, including removal from office.

Responding to the development, President Biden issued a rare statement questioning the priorities of House Republicans. He criticized them for diverting attention from more pressing matters and accused them of engaging in a “baseless political stunt” fueled by lies. The president expressed disappointment that, instead of addressing urgent issues, Republicans chose to focus on an impeachment inquiry.

The authorization of this months-long inquiry sets the stage for the impeachment investigation to extend into 2024, coinciding with Biden’s potential reelection bid and a likely matchup against former President Donald Trump. Trump, who faced impeachment twice during his presidency, has been urging his Republican allies to swiftly pursue Biden’s impeachment as part of his broader campaign for retribution against political adversaries.

The decision to hold the vote came amid increasing pressure on Speaker Mike Johnson and his team to show progress in a nearly yearlong probe focused on the business dealings of Biden’s family members. While ethical questions have been raised, no concrete evidence of corrupt behavior or bribery by Biden has emerged during his current role or his previous tenure as vice president.

Following the vote, Johnson and his leadership team released a joint statement emphasizing their commitment to a fair investigation without prejudging the outcome. House Democrats strongly opposed the inquiry resolution, denouncing it as a political stunt aimed at avenging Trump’s impeachments.

Despite initial hesitation from some House Republicans, particularly those in politically divided districts, GOP leaders successfully conveyed that the resolution is a procedural step rather than a definitive decision to impeach Biden. The impeachment process, akin to a criminal indictment, would trigger a Senate trial where conviction could lead to the president’s removal from office. However, given the Democratic majority in the Senate, such an outcome appears unlikely for Biden.

Notably, while three U.S. presidents—Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump—have been impeached, none have been removed from office by the Senate. Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 before facing impeachment in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal.

Praja Bhavan Designated Official Residence of Telangana’s Deputy CM

0

Hyderabad : The Jyotirao Phule Praja Bhavan has been officially designated as the residence of Telangana Deputy Chief Minister, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka. In an order issued on Wednesday, the state government formalized the allocation of Praja Bhavan to Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka, who oversees the critical portfolios of finance & planning, and energy.

Formerly known as Pragathi Bhavan, this iconic residence was the official dwelling of former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao until recently. Vikramarka, accompanied by his family, is expected to move into the premises on Thursday.

A section of Praja Bhavan will continue to serve as Praja Vani twice a week, where ministers and officials address citizens’ concerns and grievances.

After taking the oath on December 7, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced the renaming of Pragathi Bhavan to Jyotirao Phule Praja Bhavan. Despite this change, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy continues to operate from his residence in Jubilee Hills.

Situated in Begumpet, Pragathi Bhavan played a pivotal role in the recent political transition when the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) relinquished power to the Congress. Inaugurated in 2016, the building was perceived differently by different parties – a symbol of autocratic rule by Chandrashekar Rao to the opposition, and a symbol of Telangana’s development and pride for the BRS.

The Congress government, after coming to power, dismantled the iron fencing around Pragathi Bhavan to allow unrestricted public access. The removal of the fencing, perceived as a hurdle in traffic flow, was undertaken using bulldozers and gas cutters.

An RTI query last year revealed that Rs.49.84 crore were spent on the construction of Pragathi Bhavan. The expansive nine-acre complex comprises five buildings – the residence, Chief Minister’s office, Janahitha (meeting hall), the old CM residence, and the camp office.

Originally constructed after demolishing 10 IAS Officers’ quarters and 24 peon quarters, Pragathi Bhavan has been a subject of both admiration and criticism, symbolizing different narratives within the political landscape of Telangana.

The President will be accommodated at Rashtrapati Nilayam, the official presidential retreat located at Bolarum in Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad, during her stay until December 23.

Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari chaired a meeting on Wednesday with top officials from various departments to assess and coordinate preparations for the President’s visit. The directive was clear – ensure meticulous arrangements to uphold the dignity of the occasion.

Officials from the Police department were instructed to make comprehensive security, traffic, and bandobast arrangements. Additionally, Health, R&B, Municipal, Energy, and other relevant departments were directed to make foolproof arrangements as per the established protocol.

Present at the meeting were DGP Ravi Gupta, Special Chief Secretary Sunil Sharma, Secretary GAD V. Seshadri, Secretary Health S.A.M. Rizvi, senior police officers, and officials from line departments.

This marks President Murmu’s second visit to Hyderabad for a southern sojourn since assuming office in July last year. It is customary for the President to stay at Rashtrapati Nilayam at least once a year, where official business is conducted.

Constructed in 1860 as the country house of the British Resident at Secunderabad, Rashtrapati Nilayam became the President’s retreat after Hyderabad state’s accession to India in 1948. Spread over 90 acres, the retreat boasts a landscaped garden, seasonal flowering plants, cascading waterfalls, and various nutrition gardens.

The building itself features 20 rooms, including a dining hall and a movie theatre. It has been a tradition for Presidents to visit Hyderabad for a southern sojourn since the inaugural stay of the first President, Babu Rajendra Prasad, in 1955. In March this year, Rashtrapati Nilayam was opened to the public, but it will remain closed during December for the annual presidential sojourn.

Taking charge as the city’s top cop, Commissioner Sreenivas Reddy addressed the media, asserting a zero-tolerance stance towards drug-related activities.

Gaddam Prasad Kumar Poised to Assume Speaker Role in Telangana’s Legislative Assembly

0

Hyderabad : In a significant political development, Gaddam Prasad Kumar, a two-time Congress MLA hailing from Vikarabad, is on the brink of becoming the Speaker of Telangana’s third Legislative Assembly.

Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, following the swearing-in ceremony of the majority of the newly elected MLAs last Saturday, has issued a notification scheduling the election for the Telangana Assembly Speaker on December 14. The Governor is set to address both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council on December 15.

Aged 59, Kumar, known for his soft-spoken demeanor and widespread popularity among party colleagues, submitted his nomination for the Speaker’s position this Saturday. Notably, all 64 Congress MLAs have thrown their support behind him, and there are indications that the seven AIMIM MLAs may also back him. This potential support comes in the wake of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s efforts, suggesting to the Governor the appointment of Akbaruddin Owaisi as the Protem Speaker.

Kumar’s political journey began with a successful run on a Congress ticket in the 2009 Assembly elections. In 2012, he was appointed to N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s Cabinet as the Minister for Handlooms and Textiles. However, in 2014, during the state’s bifurcation, he faced defeat against the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS, now Bharat Rashtra Samithi or BRS) candidate B Sanjeev Rao. Subsequently, in 2018, he lost to Dr M Anand.
