World Health Organization Urges Global Action Against Youth E-Cigarette Use

0

WASHINGTON, D.C : In a critical development, the World Health Organization (WHO) has released new guidance, emphasizing the pressing need for immediate action by governments worldwide to combat the escalating rates of youth e-cigarette use and nicotine addiction.

Youth e-cigarette consumption has emerged as a significant public health concern in numerous countries, including the United States. The WHO highlights key factors propelling the surge in youth e-cigarette use, including aggressive, youth-targeted marketing strategies and the proliferation of thousands of appealing, kid-friendly flavors.

E-cigarettes are undeniably marketed in ways that allure young people, and the bold tactics employed by companies like British American Tobacco and other e-cigarette manufacturers are identified as endangering the well-being of children. A recent report by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids on social media marketing by tobacco companies revealed that British American Tobacco garnered an astonishing one billion views on social media for its Vuse e-cigarette brand. Alarmingly, nearly half of the audience for Vuse marketing content on social media is under the age of 25. From flavored products to strategic partnerships with influencers and sports brands, e-cigarettes are tailor-made to entice young consumers.

Despite being promoted as a smoking cessation aid, the WHO’s assessment concludes that “e-cigarettes as consumer products are not shown to be effective for quitting tobacco use at the population level.”

The WHO is calling on governments that prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes to ensure the robust implementation of such policies. For nations permitting the sale of e-cigarettes, the WHO urges the enforcement of stringent regulations, including the prohibition of flavored products—an advocacy strongly endorsed by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. In the United States, where over two million youths presently use e-cigarettes, nearly 90 percent of youth e-cigarette users prefer flavored products.

The WHO’s guidance sends a clear and imperative message to nations globally: the time has come to shield children from the dangers of e-cigarettes and prevent these products from addicting a new generation.

Seizure Worth Rs.1 Crore: Authorities Confiscate 360 kg of Marijuana, a Vehicle, and Four Mobile Phones

Hyderabad : In a significant operation, the Rachakonda Special Operations Team (SOT) in collaboration with Abdullapurmet police apprehended three individuals on Thursday for their involvement in an inter-state drug smuggling racket. The accused were caught smuggling a substantial amount of marijuana from Rajahmundry to Uttar Pradesh, passing through Hyderabad. The authorities confiscated 360 kg of marijuana, a vehicle, and four mobile phones, with an estimated total value of Rs. 1 crore.

The arrested individuals were identified as Vikas Tyagi (29), a plumber, Abrar (30), a cab driver, and Mohd. Amiruddin (32), a tiles worker. All three suspects are friends and residents of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, the trio had established contact with an unidentified drug peddler in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, who enticed them with a lucrative offer for smuggling drugs from Rajahmundry to Uttar Pradesh.

“The suspects accepted the proposal and, following the supplier’s instructions, traveled to Rajahmundry in a car to procure marijuana. They then delivered the contraband to the receiver in Meerut. After each successful consignment, the accused collected their share of the proceeds from the drug peddler,” explained G. Sudheer Babu, Police Commissioner, Rachakonda.

In their latest attempt, the trio acquired 360 kg of marijuana in Rajahmundry and was en route to Uttar Pradesh via Hyderabad in a vehicle. To evade police scrutiny, the suspects strategically affixed the fast tag of another vehicle to the crime vehicle.

“One of the suspects would alight before the toll plaza to assess the surroundings. Only after ensuring the vehicle received clearance would he rejoin the others in the car,” stated a police official.

Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted the vehicle near the Outer Ring Road in Abdullapurmet, successfully apprehending the suspects. The seized contraband was also recovered during the operation.

Investigations revealed that the gang had previously executed four successful marijuana smuggling operations from Rajahmundry to Meerut. The arrested individuals, along with the confiscated materials, were handed over to the Abdullapurmet police for further legal proceedings.

Rajya Sabha Clears Legislation for New Telangana Tribal University and Repeal of Outdated Laws

0

In a parliamentary session on Wednesday, the Rajya Sabha successfully passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, paving the way for the establishment of a central tribal university in Telangana. The bill, aimed at providing higher education and research facilities primarily for the tribal population, received unanimous approval through a voice vote.

The legislative process encountered a brief disruption when the Opposition walked out of the House during a debate on the Lok Sabha’s security breach issue. Despite this, the bill progressed smoothly, having been introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 4 and subsequently passed on December 7.

Addressing the significance of the new institution, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized that the establishment of the ‘Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University’ in Telangana is a mandatory provision under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. The university is anticipated to fulfill regional aspirations, promoting higher education and research in tribal communities, with a focus on subjects like tribal art, culture, customs, and traditional knowledge systems.

Minister Pradhan attributed the delay in setting up the university to the Telangana government, citing challenges in identifying a suitable location. He disclosed that the central university project is estimated to cost approximately ₹900 crore, emphasizing its potential to be a catalyst for progress among tribal communities nationwide.

The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, aligns with the vision of fostering educational and research advancements within tribal populations, reflecting a commitment to the preservation and promotion of tribal heritage and knowledge systems.
