Sonia Gandhi Set to Contest Lok Sabha Polls from Khammam: State Congress Leaders Gear Up for High-Stakes Election Battle

0

Hyderabad, Jan 5, 2024 :- In a significant development, reports are emerging that Sonia Gandhi, a key leader of the Congress party, is poised to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Khammam. Sources indicate that the state party’s top leaders have received official communication from the party headquarters, endorsing Sonia’s candidacy in Khammam. This news has sparked widespread interest, with state Congress leaders now focusing on preparations and arrangements as per the leadership’s directives.

The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) had previously passed a resolution in December, urging Sonia Gandhi to contest from Telangana. The resolution was reaffirmed recently, and Sonia Gandhi has reportedly responded positively. While the party had previously agreed in principle, the latest development clarifies the specific constituency where Sonia Gandhi will vie for a seat. Party insiders believe that Sonia’s candidacy in Telangana could yield positive outcomes in neighboring southern states like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Sources reveal that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka, and other ministers will submit Sonia’s nomination papers. State leaders are contemplating organizing a large-scale public meeting, inviting Sonia Gandhi to connect with the electorate during the election campaign. If Sonia chooses to contest from Khammam, it would mark her second electoral foray in the south, having previously contested and won from Bellary in Karnataka.

Party strategists are optimistic that fielding Sonia in Khammam, a stronghold for the Congress, will bolster the party’s presence in the state. As the political stage is set, all eyes are on Sonia Gandhi’s campaign trail and the potential impact on the electoral landscape in Telangana.

Congress Charts New Electoral Course: Focuses on 255 Seats for Lok Sabha, “Heart of Generosity” in Collaboration with INDIA Partners

0

New Delhi, Jan 5, 2024: In a strategic maneuver, the Congress party has declared its intention to concentrate on 255 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, signaling a potential reduction from its 2019 contest. Pressured by allies within the INDIA bloc, the party’s leadership, including President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, met to greenlight seat-sharing talks with INDIA alliance partners.

During a separate meeting with key party officials, Kharge underscored the significance of the 255-seat focus, suggesting the Congress’s flexibility to accommodate INDIA alliance partners. Acknowledging the challenges of seat-sharing, especially in states like Delhi, Punjab, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh, the party is gearing up for negotiations on a state-to-state basis.

While the AAP has signaled willingness for a seat-sharing pact in Punjab, caution prevails within the state Congress unit due to the AAP’s current governance. In West Bengal, the Congress steers clear of an alliance with the Trinamool Congress, and in Uttar Pradesh, negotiations with the Samajwadi Party indicate a desire for a substantial share of seats.

Mukul Wasnik, the senior Congress leader and convenor of the alliance committee, emphasized the overarching goal of securing a majority for the INDIA alliance to form the central government. The exact number of contested seats remains undecided, with the party prioritizing alliance success.

As the Congress gears up for elections, the manifesto committee, led by former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, initiates discussions. Guidelines for state units include the establishment of social media, media war rooms, and control rooms. Kharge urged unity among leaders, discouraging public disputes and internal matters reaching the media. State units are directed to expedite the candidate selection process, anticipating the release of the first list at the earliest.

In a recent development, the appellate court in Qatar has commuted the death sentences of eight former Indian Navy personnel, assigning them prison terms ranging from 3 years to 25 years. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed on Thursday that the legal team representing the individuals now has a 60-day timeframe to file an appeal in the Court of Cassation, which stands as the highest court in Qatar.

MEA spokesperson Randeep Jaiswal stated, “The legal team has obtained a copy of the confidential court order. Additionally, they have a 60-day window to submit an appeal in the Court of Cassation, the highest court in Qatar. Our legal team is actively addressing this matter, coordinating with the affected families and legal representatives to determine the next steps.”

Responding to queries about when the 60-day period officially begins, Jaiswal commented, “I would assume it would start from December 28 or the day after… but it’s for the legal team there (in Qatar) to look into these aspects.”

While emphasizing that the case is still pending in the Qatari court, Jaiswal refrained from divulging detailed information due to the sensitivity and legal nature of the issue. He clarified that although the death penalty has been commuted, the eight men have been handed “varying prison sentences.”

On December 28, the MEA had previously announced the reduction of the death sentences, stating, “The detailed judgment is awaited. We are in close touch with the legal team as well as the family members to decide on the next steps… Our Ambassador to Qatar and other officials were present in the Court of Appeal today, along with the family members.”

The eight former Navy personnel—Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal, and Sailor Ragesh—were employed by Al Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services in Doha, a defense services provider company.

Arrested in August 2022, the charges against them were never publicly disclosed by Qatari authorities. According to a report in the UK daily Financial Times, they were accused of spying for Israel. In October of the previous year, they were sentenced to death. India promptly filed an appeal against the death penalty, with six hearings conducted thus far—three in the court of appeal and three in the lower court.
