The 33rd annual conference of the Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology (IASG) witnessed the participation of more than 1500 surgeons from various parts of India. Hosted by the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) Hospitals, the event focused on diverse aspects of gastrointestinal surgery.

Dr. GV Rao, the Director of AIG Hospitals and Organizing Chairman of IASGCON 2023, highlighted the extensive scientific content of the conference. “The conference is packed with more than 100 hours of scientific sessions and features 580 research papers from surgeons across the country,” he stated.

During a fireside chat with participants, Dr. Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of AIG Hospitals, emphasized the importance of a traditional Indian diet that complements gut microbes. He advised avoiding ultra-processed foods such as soft drinks, potato chips, ready-to-eat burgers, and packaged noodles.

Renowned chef Sanjeev Kapoor stressed the significance of cooking food at home using fresh, local ingredients and seasonal vegetables for optimal health. Meanwhile, Dr. Adarsh Choudhary, Head of GI Surgery at Medanta Hospital, highlighted the nutritional benefits of plant proteins, noting that they are gentler on the gut compared to animal protein.

The conference provided a platform for in-depth discussions on surgical gastroenterology, incorporating insights from experts in the field and facilitating the exchange of valuable knowledge among the attending surgeons.
