Hyderabad, September 30, 2024 (Press Note):- A 26-year-old male patient, Altaf, was successfully operated on for a rare liver tumor and gallstones at Olive Hospital, Hyderabad. Altaf had been experiencing early satiety (loss of appetite) for two months, alongside intermittent back pain that worsened over the past month, leading to his admission under the care of Surgical Gastroenterologist Dr. Radhakrishna on September 23.

Upon examination, Dr. Radhakrishna discovered a soft mass in the epigastric region with mild tenderness, prompting further diagnostic investigations. Ultrasound imaging revealed a large heterogeneous mass measuring 12×10×11 cm attached to the liver, raising suspicions of either Focal Nodular Hyperplasia (FNH) or the Fibrolamellar variant of Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), a rare liver tumor. The scan also showed the presence of gallstones (cholelithiasis).

Further investigations, including a CT scan and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, were conducted to assess the spread of the tumor and its impact on surrounding organs and blood vessels. Blood tests were also performed to determine the nature of the tumor and assess the risk of bleeding during surgery.

Following a thorough pre-operative assessment, Altaf was diagnosed with a liver tumor and gallstones. The surgical team proceeded with a left lateral segmentectomy (removal of the liver tumor) and cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder) on September 24. The complex surgery lasted over four hours and was completed with minimal bleeding. Altaf responded well to the procedure and experienced no complications during the surgery.

Altaf is currently recovering well and is expected to be discharged within the next 2-3 days. The success of the operation was attributed to the timely diagnosis, careful planning, and the coordinated efforts of the surgical and anesthesia teams at Olive Hospital.

The swift action in diagnosing and treating the tumor has significantly improved the patient’s outlook.
