Hyderabad: In a surprising turn of events, onion prices have surged dramatically in Hyderabad’s retail markets, with onions now being sold at ₹70 per kilogram. Just days ago, the price was a mere ₹25 per kg. Local markets, where weekly bazaars have become common, are offering onions at a slightly lower rate of ₹60 per kg, but even this isn’t providing much relief to consumers.
Onions are a staple in most households in Hyderabad, not only for cooking but also for use in salads. However, the sudden price hike has led to a noticeable decrease in onion consumption, with the once-ubiquitous vegetable disappearing from dining tables. Several hotels have even displayed signs stating “No Onions” due to the scarcity and high prices.
Reports indicate that this sudden price spike and shortage are the result of heavy rainfall in Telangana and other states, which has damaged crops. Additionally, supply chain disruptions have further worsened the situation, as stored onions may have deteriorated before reaching the markets.
The escalating prices of onions have once again left the public in distress, with many feeling the pinch of this essential vegetable’s rising cost. While restaurants continue to use onions in dishes, they are doing so sparingly. It’s a stark reminder of how onions periodically remind consumers of their importance, though it remains unclear when prices will return to normal. The IMD has forecasted more rainfall, which may impact the market further.
