New Delhi, October 15, 2024: The Election Commission of India announced the schedule for assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand on Tuesday. Voting for all 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra will take place in a single phase on November 20, with the counting of votes scheduled for November 23.
In Jharkhand, the elections will be conducted in two phases. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar stated, “Voting for the 81 assembly seats in Jharkhand will be held in two phases—on November 13 for the first phase, and on November 20 for the second phase. The results will be declared on November 23.”
During the announcement of the election dates, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar shared a couplet, saying, “Adhuri Hasrato Ka Ilzam har baar hum par lagana Theek Nahin, wafa khud se nahi hoti khata EVM ki kahete ho.” He then added with a smile, “This is not from me; this is what the EVMs say.”
According to the Election Commission, over 100,000 polling stations will be set up for the Maharashtra assembly elections. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasized that the Election Commission is committed to ensuring an inclusive and accessible voting process in both states for a seamless election experience.
Rajiv Kumar shared detailed voter statistics for Maharashtra, stating that 96.3 million voters are eligible to vote in the assembly elections, including 49.7 million male voters and 46.6 million female voters. Among these, 18.5 million voters are between the ages of 20 and 29, and 2.093 million will be casting their votes for the first time. Additionally, 1.243 million voters are above the age of 85, and there are 6,031 transgender voters.
For Jharkhand, Rajiv Kumar noted that the total number of eligible voters stands at 26 million, with 13.1 million male voters and 12.9 million female voters. There are 1.184 million first-time voters in the state. The Election Commission will set up 29,562 polling stations across Jharkhand for the upcoming elections.
