High Court Warns HYDRAA: “Don’t Break the Law to Please Political Bosses”

Hyderabad September 30, 2024 :- The Telangana government established HYDRAA with the aim of beautifying Hyderabad, leading to the initiation of a statewide crackdown on illegal constructions built on lakes and lake beds. Under this drive, HYDRAA has been using bulldozers to demolish homes, hospitals, and apartments that were illegally constructed. Continuing this series of actions, HYDRAA recently demolished homes belonging to poor families in Ameenpur, which triggered a strong reaction from the affected residents. The victims approached the Telangana High Court and filed a petition, expressing their outrage over the demolitions.

In today’s hearing, the Telangana High Court summoned HYDRAA Chief Ranganathan and raised several critical questions, while expressing strong displeasure over HYDRAA’s actions on Saturdays and Sundays. The court specifically questioned the issuance of notices and the conduct of demolition activities on a Sunday, a day on which such actions are typically not allowed. The court asked the Tehsildar whether he was unaware that demolitions are not carried out on weekends, reminding HYDRAA of the basic rules in this regard.

HYDRAA Chief Ranganathan informed the court that the demolitions were carried out upon the request of the Tehsildar. However, the court expressed its frustration, asking, “If the Tehsildar makes a request, would you demolish landmarks like Charminar and the High Court without consideration?” The court also pointed out that no demolitions should have taken place since the homes had not been vacated. It further reminded HYDRAA that the High Court has previously imposed restrictions on conducting such activities on Sundays.

Issuing a stern warning, the court cautioned HYDRAA against taking illegal actions to appease political bosses, emphasizing that any unlawful activities would result in accountability. The court urged HYDRAA to proceed with care, reminding them of their legal responsibilities.
