New Delhi: A dramatic confrontation unfolded outside Parliament on Thursday as the BJP and Congress traded accusations of physical assault during protests sparked by Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The political skirmish saw delegations from both parties heading to police offices to file complaints against each other, further intensifying the situation.
BJP Accuses Rahul Gandhi of Assault
Union Minister Anurag Thakur alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had violated provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempted murder. BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi claimed that Gandhi pushed another MP, who then fell on him, causing injuries. “I was standing near the stairs when Rahul Gandhi pushed an MP, and he fell on me, injuring me,” Sarangi stated before being taken to a hospital.
Meanwhile, Nagaland BJP MP Phangnon Konyak accused Gandhi of making her feel unsafe during the protests. “Rahul Gandhi stood uncomfortably close to me and started shouting,” she claimed.
Rahul Gandhi Denies Allegations
Rahul Gandhi refuted the BJP’s claims, accusing their MPs of blocking his entry into Parliament. “BJP MPs were trying to stop me, push me, and threaten me. This is about protecting the Constitution and honoring Ambedkar ji’s memory,” Gandhi said.
Congress Alleges Assault on Mallikarjun Kharge
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also alleged physical assault, claiming BJP MPs pushed him at Parliament’s entrance. “I was physically pushed, causing me to lose balance and aggravate a pre-existing knee injury,” Kharge wrote in a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, demanding an inquiry.
Kharge described the incident as “an assault on the Leader of the Opposition, the Congress President, and the democratic spirit of Parliament.”
Heated Exchanges Continue
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the incident, asserting that Parliament is “not Rahul Gandhi’s personal property.” Rijiju also claimed that BJP MPs Mukesh Rajput and Pratap Sarangi were assaulted by Gandhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly called the injured MPs to inquire about their health, while BJP leaders reviewed video footage to substantiate their allegations.
FIRs Expected Against Gandhi
TDP MP Byreddy Shabari and BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj are expected to file FIRs against Rahul Gandhi over the incident.
Opposition’s Counterclaims
The Congress shared video evidence accusing BJP MPs of blocking opposition leaders, including Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi, from entering Parliament. “This is hooliganism in the temple of democracy,” the Congress alleged.

The protests stem from Amit Shah’s remarks on Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha earlier this week, which the INDIA bloc termed disrespectful. With both sides unwilling to back down, Parliament remained in a deadlock, with high political tensions marking the day.
