Ranchi, July 3, 2024 – Champai Soren tendered his resignation as Jharkhand Chief Minister to the Governor on Wednesday. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) executive president Hemant Soren has staked a claim to form the new government.

Champai Soren addressed the media after stepping down, stating, “A few days ago, I was made the Chief Minister and given the responsibility of the state. After Hemant Soren returned, our alliance decided to choose him as our leader. Now, I have resigned from the post of Chief Minister.”

The 67-year-old JMM leader was sworn in as the Chief Minister on February 2, following Hemant Soren’s resignation due to an alleged land scam investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Hemant Soren, accompanied by Champai Soren, met Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan to stake his claim to form the government. Hemant Soren was released from jail on June 28 after nearly five months, having been granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court in a money laundering case linked to the alleged land scam.

“The CM (Champai Soren) has informed you of everything. We will provide all details in due course. We have followed all necessary procedures,” Hemant Soren told reporters after meeting the Governor.

After his release, Hemant Soren claimed to be a victim of conspiracy. “I was falsely implicated. A conspiracy was hatched against me, and I was forced to spend five months in jail. I respect the judiciary. The court delivered its order, and I am out on bail. However, the judicial process is long,” he added.

The Jharkhand High Court stated, “Though the conduct of the petitioner has been highlighted by the Enforcement Directorate due to the FIR instituted by the petitioner against the ED officials, there is no likelihood of the petitioner committing a similar nature of offense.”
