In response to concerns over the emergence of new Covid-19 variants dubbed FLiRT, health experts have reassured the public that there is no need for panic or heightened caution. FLiRT variants, stemming from the lineage of the highly transmissible Omicron, notably include KP.1.1 and KP.2, named after specific mutations.

According to recent data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, KP.2 accounted for approximately 25% of newly sequenced cases in the country towards the end of April. Dr. Swapnil M. Khadake, HOD & Consultant Critical Care at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, emphasized, “Overall, there is no need for panic or extra caution, nor is there a requirement for any specific medications. Improving immunity through a healthy lifestyle will be crucial.”

Symptoms of the new variants closely mirror those of previous strains, including sore throat, runny nose, fatigue, and fever. Dr. Khadake noted that while hospitalization rates may be lower, precautions such as mask-wearing and hand hygiene remain vital in reducing transmission.

Dr. Dhiren Gupta, Senior Consultant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, highlighted that while FLiRT variants may be more transmissible, severe symptoms akin to pneumonia are less likely. However, individuals with severe comorbidities should exercise caution.

Recent studies suggest rapid spread of KP.2, prompting global attention. Dr. Ravindra Gupta from C.K. Birla Hospital, Gurugram, emphasized that while FLiRT variants exhibit no distinct symptoms from Omicron, there have been no reports of serious illness thus far. The situation continues to be monitored closely.
